Why are fish and chip portions so big?

If the price of fish and chips is going up couldn't they just start to make the portions smaller? One large cod and chips is enough to feed 3 of us for dinner round here!

@marjayy

I can easily polish off large fish and chips with curry sauce. Then finish what DH leaves. Grin
That's more like it! Can't be doing with the competitive underrating and penis portions on threads like this "Oh DH and strapping 6ft tall DS will have a large each whilst me and DD couldn't possibly manage more than half a fishcake to share"

The bloody chippy is wasted on them!

EssexLioness · 05/04/2022 19:01

It varies. All the ones near us are absolutely gigantic. Yes if we travel just a few miles to the coast, all the portions are absolutely tiny and cost more. Guess they know people will pay more to sit and have chips on the beach.

SockFluffInTheBath · 05/04/2022 19:01

Our local chippie’s portions are huge and we share, but our favourite seaside place has more sensible portion sizes.

Vanderpump · 05/04/2022 19:02

@ParkheadParadise

When we go to the chippy everyone gets a Supper. I wouldn't think about buying a fish supper and sharing it with dh & dd 😂😂😂
A special fish supper???
tulips27 · 05/04/2022 19:04

Chips doubled in price near me sometime around the first year of covid (I don't know when exactly because I didn't go there), they've never come down.

OutingHobby · 05/04/2022 19:05

@MrOllivander

This is a small chips from my local (battered sausage, scraps and Irish curry sauce) Costs about £3
Ooh now that looks gooood

I eat half for dinner and save half for lunch the next day Blush. Heated in the oven though, not the microwave. Portions round here are huge though!

ParkheadParadise · 05/04/2022 19:08

@Vanderpump
DH sometimes gets a special fish supper. I prefer a sausage supper 😂

Randomuser9876 · 05/04/2022 19:08

I'm only here for the competitive under eating!!!

One portion between THREE?

I'm in Yorkshire where we do proper portions and it's a standard each for dh and I and pensioners portion each for my primary aged girls.

We have that maybe twice a month so you'd want to do it properly surely?!

I also love the term "penis portions", surely women are allowed to enjoy their food too?!

DrCoconut · 05/04/2022 19:09

Me and DS both need gluten free fish and chips. There's only one shop locally that does them and large is the only option. We share because they're huge. No more cheap specials though 😫

Blackmagicqueen · 05/04/2022 19:11

'Surely it depends on the shop and the persons appetite
Is this a bit like the mumsnet chicken?'

🤣 I think it is! A standard fish and chips feeds a family of 7; one can only eat half a chip and a morsel of fish.

chisanunian · 05/04/2022 19:12

One portion of chips from our local is gigantic. You've never seen so many chips, it's ridiculous. I think they do it because they are gradually making the fish portions slightly smaller, and they think we won't notice if the plate has a chip Everest on it.

Cannae beat it

OutingHobby · 05/04/2022 19:16

One portion between THREE? thats what I'm saying though. I know it sounds like thats not enough but it really is the portions are massive.

OP posts:
OutingHobby · 05/04/2022 19:17

There should be a standard "small" "medium" and "large" portion.

Mini fish and chips 99p
Regular fish and chips £4.75
Large £6.59

I don’t think they could produce it any cheaper, the portions are about right where I live, regular fish and chips is just enough.

Savingpeoplehuntingthings · 05/04/2022 19:18

I want chippy now!
I have fish, chips, peas and scraps and eat the lot.im not sharing! Oh And a can of dandelion.

In other news I made chicken curry for 4 of us tonight with only 2 breasts (the chickens not mine) go me! Grin

marjayy · 05/04/2022 19:18

@daisychainsandrainbows Yep I'll scoff the lot.

I also order a couple battered sausages for later in the evening Grin

To be fair we have gousto most of the times so I'm restricted to sensible portion sizes. Hence making the most of a chippy tea.

SheWoreYellow · 05/04/2022 19:18

In some areas “fish and chips” is called a “fish supper”. It confused us when we moved house. We thought it was like a meal with a drink etc. It wasn’t.

CheesusWept · 05/04/2022 19:19

When I get a fish supper it lasts me for the whole week.

NeedleNoodle3 · 05/04/2022 19:19

We feed the whole street with one large fish and chips and have leftovers.

There was a bloke on the news earlier in the week saying the price of peas has gone up too.

I’m in my fifties. My very Best friend remember vividly as a child her parents (who were abusive alcoholics in years ago come) buying two fish one chips for the four of them and always being hungry.

I get that you sometimes get too many chips but surely one fish isnt too much per person. I do order small chips for us, which is a child’s portion and ample but I am not sharing my fish with anyone.

Twolostsoulsswimminginafishbow · 05/04/2022 19:22

I live in a coastal Yorkshire town. It has to be Haddock, cod are vile bottom-feeding beasts. Most friends wouldn’t eat cod either. We do share a large haddock between two. I don’t eat chips but half of that with mushy peas is perfect.
