Yellow cars, Is this a thing?

All the students at work, told me that if you see a yellow car you pretend punch someone. And say yellow car no returns. I've never heard of it.

Pretend? Not up north, you whack em.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 05/04/2022 07:05

I only know Yellow Car from the Radio 4 series Cabin Pressure. No pretend punching involved there.

110APiccadilly · 05/04/2022 07:05

I've come across it pretty widely. No idea where it comes from, though a version of it (no punching) gets mentioned in the radio sitcom Cabin Pressure! Have also known families with their own additions for e.g. purple or pink cars.

GnomeyGnome · 05/04/2022 07:06

It's something we used to play as kids in the back of the car. Can't say I've ever known any adults to do it.

LaNozzeDiFigaro · 05/04/2022 07:06

You clearly haven't lived. It's a thing, you better join in next time you see one Wink

Somuddled · 05/04/2022 07:07

It was a real punch to the arm when I was younger

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 05/04/2022 07:08

We started doing this with our children almost 20 years ago.
Still occasionally do it (even though we now have a yellow car).
Yellow car 1,2,3, Is our preferred wording.

YouMadeABear · 05/04/2022 07:08

Absolutely a thing. Brief truce for a couple of weeks after the BCG jabs though unless you were SURE you were punching a scab-free arm.

AchillesPoirot · 05/04/2022 07:08

Mini nip no return

Taxi slap no return

Yellow car no return

I’d forgotten that😁

When you see a yellow say 'yellow car'. That's it.
Riverlee · 05/04/2022 07:11

Nope, never heard of it. Is. It a regional saying? We always had ice cream if you saw a yellow car.

Petalpup · 05/04/2022 07:12

We used to play this if we saw a beetle-we’d say ‘slug buggy..(whatever colour)…’ and whack whoever was with us!

My son also plays ‘mini gotcha’ but that doesn’t involve hitting. Just have to say mini gotcha whenever you see one and the first one to 5 wins.
If you see a mini garage you can say mini for the winni and you win outright.
Yellow cars are ‘cheese on wheels’
Green cars are ‘snot buggy’

Road trips are exhausting

Cornettoninja · 05/04/2022 07:13

Definitely a thing. We still play it!

I really want a yellow car to be able to drive around knowing that I’m enabling the continuing this fine tradition of children thumping one another on car journeys Grin

cakeorwine · 05/04/2022 07:16

How to play Yellow car - but you don't punch anyone

You're always playing Yellow Car

BlueSpottedGiraffe · 05/04/2022 07:17

Yup I thought everyone played this! I hadn't played it since I was a kid then me and DH were talking about it a few months ago and decided to play on our next long journey, was great fun Grin

NurseBernard · 05/04/2022 07:19

Yep, yellow car punch.

I’m in NZ, if you’re interested in how widespread it is.

DC are 13 and 11 and been doing it as long as I remember.

Anyfeckinusername · 05/04/2022 07:20

TheChild · 05/04/2022 07:22

Yellow car no return.
No punching though, that's reserved for the Mini-bash no return.
DH family do orange car no return, they are quite clearly wrong.
But now my children do rainbow car, so we all have to spot a car of every colour of the rainbow and when we finally do...we start all over again!

One of my favourite things is a peaceful car journey just watching the world go by...I never get this

megletthesecond · 05/04/2022 07:23

Yellow car and shout "banana!" here.

Tee20x · 05/04/2022 07:25

Most deffo is a thing.

Dancingonarainbow · 05/04/2022 07:25

Yup it always was a thing growing up in the North . And it was a real punch too .
I have just asked my kids and apparently it is still a thing and I now live in the South .

AmberGer · 05/04/2022 07:25

It definitely is 'a thing' but with proper punches Wink

Ducksurprise · 05/04/2022 07:28

We used to play Fiat 500 pinch until they became so prevalent I started to worry SS would become involve

TrivialSoul · 05/04/2022 07:29

I'm frequently driving along quite happily only to have a teenager in the back screech yellow car and whack the other one. No pretend whacks here and haven't heard no return added on, just yellow car and a whack!

Rewis · 05/04/2022 07:31

We did this with volkswagen beetles
