Holy moly my smart meter has hit 10 pounds

Eyedropeyeflop · 03/04/2022 21:36

I’ve never seen my smart meter hit 10 pounds in one day.

We are a family of 5 in a standard 3 bed house. The heating has been on today from 3-7pm (and not on full).

Couple of showers, 1 bath. I cooked sausages in the oven, veg on the hob. Nothing too extravagent.

Few cups of tea.

Looking forward we will cope, but we will not have hardly any surplus.

Anyone else want to share their smart meter readings today?

Oh my word… just checked… £11…. Nothing extravagant at all… not even cooked a roast…,

Lonelydaisy · 03/04/2022 21:49

3.50

Heating on for 3 hours, hot water for 2, washing machine 3 times and all the other usual things but no cooking

TheSnowyOwl · 03/04/2022 21:56

Electric shower? They might as well eat energy!

Eyedropeyeflop · 03/04/2022 22:00

Yes electric shower. It’s a council house not sure if I can change that. I’ll look into it.

£10 has been common for us in the depths of winter for a few years - obviously mild this winter as it never got that high. Today was £8.65 before I came up to bed. About £2 of that will be hot water for a bath.

WhiteJellycat · 03/04/2022 22:03

£4.11 I'm looking at it all the time tbh so I think that's helping to keep it low!

stairgates · 03/04/2022 22:04

We don't have a smart meter and I think I may now be too scared to get one!

Iamtheweedonkey · 03/04/2022 22:04

I've been shocked the last 3 days, over £10 each day, roughly £3-4 elec and the rest gas. Family of 5, 3 teens. Dd was sorting washing without me realising, used tumble for a while load of towels, had to quickly stop her and explain. The heating was on for a.few hours in morn and again in eve, so very shocked at gas rate.

FTMFML · 03/04/2022 22:07

£10 was our “norm” before in winter but coming out now into spring we are now reaching roughly £13 with heating on for two/three hours a day, just checked the meter for today and we are at 12.56 😧 4 Bed large house, which we used to be able to afford comfortably… is becoming very uncomfortable of late 😒

LemonMuffins · 03/04/2022 22:08

Yep. Ours has also been around £10 the last few days. Can't wait to turn the heating off.

clevelandspy · 03/04/2022 22:27

My app is refusing to show our smart meter usage for the last two days Confused

XenoBitch · 03/04/2022 22:32

I turned mine off. I can't cut back anymore, and looking at what it is costing just causes anxiety. It is what it is.

HunterHearstHelmsley · 03/04/2022 22:36

Mine is £3.66 electricity and £1.29 gas so far today. £4.95 in total.

Four adults, two children, three bed semi. We're cutting down on the tumble dryer and dishwasher but not being too careful otherwise.

TheChosenTwo · 03/04/2022 22:38

We don’t have one! Surely plugging it in is just something else adding to your electricity bill?!
(That’s not actually why we don’t have one, we were given one a few years ago and it was on for about 3 days before I unplugged it and got rid)

Bluetowelsandflannels · 03/04/2022 22:42

Mine was £14 today jeez, big jump from the middle of the week. Old draughty house

Bluetowelsandflannels · 03/04/2022 22:43

It would barely cost anything to rum but could save you a lot

Gimlisaxe · 03/04/2022 22:49

Dont have a smart meter but before winter is was £2.85 for electric a day and £2.15 for gas.

During winter gas went up to £2.85 and I can only see that going up, only thing we use gas is for the heating, but despite cutting down the heating the price is still rising

ThePug · 03/04/2022 22:56

It's scary isn't it! Ours got to just over £6 yesterday and I thought that was bad enough! (5 bed house, 2 adults 2 small boys - one large load of washing that was tumble dried, full dishwasher load, one bath, one shower, oven on for dinner and to bake cookies in the morning - that won't be happening again! and heating flicked on a few times but thermostat only set to 18 in the day and up to 20 for a couple of hours in the evening so hardly basking in heat!) The gas price seems crazily expensive, can't imagine how expensive heating the house in the depths of winter is going to be.

MrsDThomas · 04/04/2022 06:57

I have a prepayment meter so that works just as well in telling me how much i use.

LaMariposa · 04/04/2022 07:02

£1.15 for electric, thank goodness for a sunny day (solar panels, we remortgaged to get them last year, along with loft insulation)

Gas isn’t on a smart meter, but heating is now on a smart thermostat and set to 19 degrees. Water is heated once a day.

tothemoonandbackbuses · 04/04/2022 07:02

Are these smart meters or energy monitors you are all using to check you useage?
I have a smart meter but have been reading it twice a day and then doing the maths!

daphnedoo12 · 04/04/2022 07:04

£5 a day for us on gas and £5 on electric.

2 adults, two babies. 2 showers per day, 1 bath (tiny bath) shared between babies

I use slow cookers and microwaves where possible, this is a nightmare

BertieBotts · 04/04/2022 07:09

Air fryers cost less to run than an oven if you're just doing something like sausages. It's basically an oven, just smaller.

myusernamewastakenbyme · 04/04/2022 07:14

This is why i wont have a smart meter either...Id drive myself mad with anxiety looking at it going up and up.

LennyAndTheDucks · 04/04/2022 07:16

The thing you plug in is not a smart meter, it’s an in home display which you don’t have to use.

If you don’t have a smart meter installed then the in home display wouldn’t actually work anyways.
