Holy moly my smart meter has hit 10 pounds

Eyedropeyeflop · 03/04/2022 21:36

I’ve never seen my smart meter hit 10 pounds in one day.

We are a family of 5 in a standard 3 bed house. The heating has been on today from 3-7pm (and not on full).

Couple of showers, 1 bath. I cooked sausages in the oven, veg on the hob. Nothing too extravagent.

Few cups of tea.

Looking forward we will cope, but we will not have hardly any surplus.

Anyone else want to share their smart meter readings today?

I'm on oil too. But still no idea how you can run and electric heater and the oven for 1.5 hours and only pay £1.67!

I was £1.50 for electricity yesterday. Ran 3 loads of washing on super eco setting, two 10 minute showers and no oven on. Used the stove top for about 30 minutes. TV and lights obviously, charged phones and laptop.
I was £2.30 the day before because I had the oven on for 3 hours (big roast) and the kids had their gaming PC on and two TVs etc.

And I'm still on my old fixed price! My standing charge is 20p and by unit price is 17p. My fix ends on the 19th.

No idea how you're only paying £1.67!

Oh my word, yes I’m with eon and they haven’t updated my new tacit which started on 31st March - think I’ll phine them - giving me false info there they are

@yellowsuninthesky

I had an energy monitor years ago, I'll have to dig it out and use it (it runs off batteries). We have a three bed house and heating is on 5 hours a day though I turn some radiators off and the thermostat down when it's milder. DH feels the cold more much than I do so if I switch the heating off anymore he'll just use other heaters! Hot water is on two hours a day (we don't have an electric shower).

I think a lot of people waste energy charging items that are already full, but I don't know whether it amounts to a significant cost or just a few pennies a month. Obviously if every penny counts it's worth checking if you're leaving things plugged in.

Why would anyone charge an item that was already full 🤔
NotanotherboxofFrogs · 05/04/2022 09:53

@Musicalmaestro

NotanotherboxofFrogs Presumably you have oil costs to pay for.
Yes I do. Oil costs are £20 a week all year round. I'm in an oil saving scheme.

There are 2 of us in a small bungalow. I have just looked at the total on both...We cook with electric and have gas central heating. Oh and I did 2 loads of washing on Saturday. How on Earth are people getting to £10+ a day?

Er because not everyone has just two people living in a small bungalow.....the inability of some people to imagine other people's lives is just mind boggling sometimes Hmm

Eyedropeyeflop · 05/04/2022 10:21

I know right. 5 people in a 3 bed council house rated 1 on energy efficiency (it’s steel framed) …. Washing, eating and keeping warm. (And that is not having the heating on excessively we put jumpers and dressing gowns on first).

Couldn’t possibly even think how we get to 10 pounds a day on dual fuel.

Convenience. Once you've plugged something in to charge that you don't use that often, it's easier to leave it there (e.g.,in my case: iPad, cordless straighteners, robot hoover, Kindle, handheld vac, Lumea, many other possibly things). If you remember to unplug it when it's done, it might gradually lose charge and not be ready when you need it.

Or phones, plug them in overnight, and then you won't wake up after 2-3 hours when they're done to unplug them, so they sit fully charged for a few more hours.

I always intend to be better at unplugging things from chargers, but I don't know if it really makes that much difference.

Irridescantshimmmer · 05/04/2022 10:30

@hattie43

How come the difference in costs , one person cooks a roast at a cost of £11 someone else 3 loads of washing , bath etc for £3.50.

Kinda puts me off getting a smart metre .

The difference between costs is due to the tarrif charged by the utility companies which can vary nationally betwenn one area and another for electricty.

The standing charges for both fuels can vary too.

BarbaraofSeville · 05/04/2022 10:33

Are they actually drawing any current when full? Or does the charger effectively stop charging and hence no longer costs money even though it is plugged in?

I suppose you need to test it with an energy monitor to be sure.

Don't be put off if you want a smart meter @hattie43, it's a measuring device and has no impact on how much power you use

Everybody has unique circumstances when it comes to energy usage and costs it's completely meaningless to compare yourself to anyone else but the type of meter isn't one of the factors you need to worry about

SlipperySlope99 · 05/04/2022 10:54

Well after an hour on the phine to eon next- 30mins waiting- the guy was lovely but my meter is still showing older and cheaper tariffs- so no way of measuring the costs til the update goes in 🙈

Dontfuckingsaycheese · 05/04/2022 11:47

I went over £3 on my smart meter yesterday for the first time. Think doing a wash nudged it over. Thank goodness we live in a new-build and I’m in the middle. Sure it helps. So much of spends are on heating so fingers crossed everyone’s usage drops a bit once the weather warms up…

User76745333 · 05/04/2022 11:51

My British Gas app is currently showing that I’m using £9.05 per hour!!!!

Caminante · 05/04/2022 11:58

I was getting this through the winter because I've been on a fixed rate. Seemed terrible at the time, now it's a lot lower than some of the new tariffs. But I'll come off the fixed rate eventually and catch up with everybody else 😑

What will it be like next winter? £15 a day? £20? Well it won't because the heating will have to be off.

Presumably you are currently running the tumble dryer etc?
User76745333 · 05/04/2022 13:17

Nope. Nothing running apart from the fridge/freezer, WiFi, everhot (which doesn’t consume anything like that). Clearly there’s an issue with the app

If everyone cancelled their DD it would force the government into action

deadlanguage · 06/04/2022 13:06

@Bedsheets4knickers

Not really, you don’t have to pay by DD
Bedsheets4knickers · 06/04/2022 13:12

Dead
You are missing the point .

deadlanguage · 06/04/2022 13:23

Even if everyone just didn’t pay their bills (which would never happen, as some people can lose their jobs over financial problems), I don’t think the government would step in except to tell people to pay their bills! The firms are more likely to stop trading while they pursue customers for non-payment than the government step in to fix prices.

Bedsheets4knickers · 06/04/2022 13:27

We are a country of sheep . I can't believe we are all just excepting this . It's crazy . We are the majority if we hit them where it hurts they'll have to do something .

deadlanguage · 06/04/2022 13:30

Hardly our prisons are jam packed . I'm really being serious about this . We could change things if we all stuck together and said NO . Look what happened to the poll tax .
deadlanguage · 06/04/2022 13:35

We have an opportunity to do that every time we vote.

worriedatthistime · 06/04/2022 15:33

Nearly done £5 already today
Washing machine on and boiled kettle couple of times
No heating and wfh but all laptop/ phone etc was charged last night so using the batteries
When we have showers/ baths etc it will hit £10
