Holy moly my smart meter has hit 10 pounds

Eyedropeyeflop · 03/04/2022 21:36

I’ve never seen my smart meter hit 10 pounds in one day.

We are a family of 5 in a standard 3 bed house. The heating has been on today from 3-7pm (and not on full).

Couple of showers, 1 bath. I cooked sausages in the oven, veg on the hob. Nothing too extravagent.

Few cups of tea.

Looking forward we will cope, but we will not have hardly any surplus.

Anyone else want to share their smart meter readings today?

@hattie43

Some people will still be on fixed contracts so wint see the changes yet.
My contract is fixed until the 18th. I'll see the inceease then.

So does that £10 include heating as well? Do you have electric heating, or does your meter monitor gas use as well?

I have to have separate companies for electric and gas because of the way the heating is run in flats.

We do have smart meters for electricity, though, that send the readings automatically, but we don't have in-home displays. I wonder if we could get them, though, as my flat is less than 10m from the cupboard with the meters in, and I think that's what it says you need to be. Has anyone in a flat got a display?

I wonder if there's a way of getting a display for the gas one as well. I can keep pressing the buttons to read it myself easily enough but it's a bit of a pain, and I'd notice much more with a display sitting right in front of me, especially if it also calculated the cost!

ImFree2doasiwant · 04/04/2022 08:34

Mine went over budget. I was hone alone all day. No tv, no tumble dryer, shower or dishwasher. 2 loads of washing. Heating (oil!) On 1 hrs a.m. abd 3 hours p.m

Festivalpartygirl · 04/04/2022 08:39

Beware anyone with EON, our smart meter hasn’t updated the new Tariff, the old Tariff expired 31/3, I think we’ve been led into a false sense of security as over the weekend we haven’t seen a difference, thanks to these threads I checked our account online last night and for electric it was £4.37 compared to our £2.90 the smart meter was showing. Online account shows our new Tariff, I’ve turned the meter on and off and still shows old one.

overitall1 · 04/04/2022 08:43

£3.80

Dishwasher (twice)
Washing machine
Roast
2 baths (2 people, not one having 2)
Breadmaker
Usual lights, computers, tv etc.

Up until April we never went above £3 - how in hells name do people get into double figures??? Shock

Patters4779 · 04/04/2022 08:45

@nldnmum02 I wondered exactly the same. I feel like I'm just accepting it like "ah its ok MPs...you just get some payrises...we'll all just craic on with it"

marqueses · 04/04/2022 08:49

@tothemoonandbackbuses

Are these smart meters or energy monitors you are all using to check you useage? I have a smart meter but have been reading it twice a day and then doing the maths!
I think posters must mean their lives display monitors, oris everyone actually reasing their meter every day?

I don't have a smart meter but expect to be at about £10 a day based on my previous usage and new prices

It's a very bad situation.

sunshineforest · 04/04/2022 08:52

@clevelandspy

My app is refusing to show our smart meter usage for the last two days Confused
So is mine. Are you with Shell?
Bedsheets4knickers · 04/04/2022 09:01

We hit £14 yesterday and really did have a low key day . I'm trying to figure out why it's so varied across households . We were the highest among our friends and some of them had done washing and tumble drying.

ShaneTwane · 04/04/2022 09:05

£7.80 yesterday I a 2 bed flat :( one bath shared between two people. Heating on for a couple of hours and the hob used to cook meat everything else in a slow cooker.

That's what I'm trying to fathom and we are at the wrong end of it 😩
Maybeitstimeforachange · 04/04/2022 09:10

Our British Gas account has been unavailable since last week, does it say on the meters themselves?

curlymom · 04/04/2022 09:14

£18 for us dual fuel. Five of us very big house. Not much we can do 😫

Hadenoughofbloodycovid · 04/04/2022 09:16

£2.11
2 bedroom house 2 adults
3 loads washing
2 loads dishwasher
Roasted a chicken, normal hob use, tv charging stuff etc
2 showers, heating on for 2hours in the morning probably the same in the evening (got a log burner so that was lit)
I’m beginning to think my smart meter not working🤔

Shehasadiamondinthesky · 04/04/2022 09:19

I've put my smart meter behind the sofa and whacked the heating. I did buy an old fashioned gas stove kettle that whistles.
I have a gas shower which I hated, who the hell has a gas shower. I'm thanking God for it right now.

SmallestInTheClass · 04/04/2022 09:21

Heating on for 2-3 hours makes a huge difference. Ours is on an hour a day max now and can't wait to turn it off. Washing uses much too so trying to wear clothes like jeans and hoodies for more days before washing if they're not smelly/stained. I've started to hang them to air for a day and wear again.

RewildingAmbridge · 04/04/2022 09:22

We have ufh in the bathroom turned that off and is a bit lower this morning and thermostat is on 16 not 18 so the heating didn't kick in but it's pretty miserable
DS and I got into bed to watch a film yesterday afternoon while DH was out. I did a casserole for dinner so the oven was on for nearly an hour but cooked banana bread at the same time, one load of washing on a quick wash that I hung outside. Just under £7 yesterday

JS87 · 04/04/2022 09:37

Reasons for such big differences between households could include
How much insulation you have
Single/ double glazing
Temperature you use your washing machine at
Temperature you heat your house to
What type of boiler you have- condensing or not, hot water tank or not.
It’s impossible to compare how much people are paying without any of this knowledge.
I guess that’s why some people are paying more than others for what seems like the same amount of energy.

User76745333 · 04/04/2022 09:41

Averaging £10 a day here for the past three days. That’s just electricity, we use oil for heating and hot water.

Eyedropeyeflop · 04/04/2022 09:42

The 10 pounds was for my gas and electric. Expensive for what we usually pay.

I live in a metal/tin council house it’s poorly insulated overall.

@XenoBitch

I turned mine off. I can't cut back anymore, and looking at what it is costing just causes anxiety. It is what it is.
This is why we don’t have one, they’re like heart rate monitors Confused if you know you’re being sensible and have cut down what more can you do? Sad
Eyedropeyeflop · 04/04/2022 09:47

@SockFluffInTheBath

I like to know so I can make sure I have put the money aside. It’s also useful to know what’s expensive to do in your house but I agree not worth it if it causes anxiety.

Personally I get more anxiety not knowing.

TabithaTittlemouse · 04/04/2022 09:56

I would just sit watching it all day and eventually rehome the children to save money!

I have a stupid question… our heating and hot water is oil. Does it use electric too when we shower/bath?

Eyedropeyeflop · 04/04/2022 09:57

I’ve just made my second cup of tea. Forgot to look how much it cost me.

Feeling indulgent 😂.

You’ll use a tiny bit in pumps and things.
