If you've not got a Smart Meter.

And are on the Price Cap rate - as rates go up on 1st April and you want to ensure that your supplier knows how much of your energy was used before and after the price cap changes.

I am sure it will be trending on Twitter tomorrow. #meterreadingday

I have a Smart Meter so don't think i need to do it.

British Gas will probably crashGrin, website is a bit slow at the best of times.

Morph22010 · 30/03/2022 22:51

I would love to but my electric meter is completely dead and not working at all, eon next are being completely useless about it and have now ignored my complaint

Furries · 31/03/2022 01:02

I’d diarised it - need to make sure I do it.

Hopefully someone will bump in the morning as another reminder.

LardyDee · 31/03/2022 01:45

Presumably it's in the consumer's interest to bump up the meter reading (within reason) so that they effectively prepay for power at the old cheaper price? (Obviously no one on Mumsnet would such a thing.)

AnyFucker · 31/03/2022 02:41

Bumping. Do it at midnight, or as late as you can.

I have a smart meter, I guess i don't need to do it? I'm on a fixed tariff until end of May so bill will go up from June.

Now there’s an interesting idea …
GeneLovesJezebel · 31/03/2022 07:14

Do we need to read the water meter ? Is that going up too ?

That would be fraud, personally I don't think it is in my interests to commit fraud.
FinnRussell · 31/03/2022 07:15

Martin Lewis recommends taking a photo if you have a smart meter in case of dispute.

arethereanyleftatall · 31/03/2022 07:19

I agree that's fraud, but what do people think of this...

I had a bill a few weeks ago and their estimated readings were over the actual (I was too slow to supply actual) . The readings they estimated are still more than todays. I'm thinking to not say anything at all?

WhoWants2Know · 31/03/2022 07:20

If you have a prepayment meter, do you still need to take a reading?

Whilst you could prob do it slightly if you take a much higher reading so that at some point in the next couple of years you end up with a massive variation in your electricity use. Ie very high use now, very low use for next 6 months, the energy company assume it’s an error and even it out anyway, I’m assuming it’s in their terms and conditions somewhere. I had this happen before, I hadn’t purposefully submitted an incorrect reading but it must have been and they recalculated the bills going back couple of years, it didn’t make a massive diff then as the costs hadn’t gone up so much but I think they’d gone up a bit
MrsLargeEmbodied · 31/03/2022 07:23

i did it yesterday, i thought the website would crash

TheHoleNineYards · 31/03/2022 07:24

Hypothetically speaking, if the company’s estimate was higher than my actual usage, I’d be better off not doing a reading for a month or so wouldn’t I?

Hypothetically, of course.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 31/03/2022 07:24

i dont understand my electric metre, it has 3 readings

MoonSpoonSoon · 31/03/2022 07:26

I sent my meter readings a couple of weeks ago. Should I do it again today?

Ooh, tricky. If you give them the true readings at least you will have banked some credit.

But very tempting to be sneaky and stay quiet, especially as the fuel companies themselves are being very sneaky by hiking up the daily standard charges because they know consumers will be cutting back.

Yes.
NippyWoowoo · 31/03/2022 07:29

I enter my readings every time and the money is taken from my account as I do.

Do I still need to do this?

And if I do, do I enter it on my account?

mum2jakie · 31/03/2022 07:33

I did mine last night because I was worried the site would crash today!

MrsLargeEmbodied · 31/03/2022 07:36

if you have a prepayment metre, should you put extra money on it today?

Kittycaz · 31/03/2022 07:38

@Morph22010 I'm in same boat with eon next gas meter broken since December can't give a reading and they keep telling me they can't fix it until they know who my MAM is. I think they just waiting so they can charge me 4 months worth of gas at highest price. 🤬

SpinningTheSeedsOfLove · 31/03/2022 07:41

@MrsLargeEmbodied

That would seem to make sense; but I’m no Martin Lewis.
