Warsaw Russian is letting out a lot of smoke - there has been no decision on who among them will be the next pontiff.

Biden is going there Friday

Is Boris Johnson the designated survivor?

Who the heck let me be in charge?

Irpin, Hostomel and Bucha surrounded by Ukrainian forces to the west of Kyiv apparently.

Seems likely given movements over the last couple of days.

Would take significant pressure off Kyiv if this force could be eliminated or surrendered.

@Ijsbear

That's a neat and well organised site!

Two Ukrainians arrived last night to stay in our garden annex (unfortunate coincidence, that word). I was a bit nervous but they seem to be lovely, if unsettled and a bit skittish. Got to register them today.

Their dog is smaller than our cat!

You're amazing, well done for doing this. If I had a spare room I would do the same, but I will have to find another way to try and help out.

Cold and/or wet feet can give you frostbite or trench foot if the conditions are right, which I would think they were.
Some of the medicines we sent to Odesa from Romania were for trench foot. It's a real problem atm

Is it paranoid to think that after we've seen several articles in the press about how RU would stage a chemical attack and make it look like an accident, that is could be related: www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-60849142

I realise I probably am adding 1+1 and coming up with 56... but the timing is, if nothing else, coincidental.

I mentioned in a previous thread that one thing that Putin likes to do is to make his stance synonymous with the word 'nuclear' so as to spread fear and dread. So this could easily be a coincidence, but it happens that 'chemical attack' is a phrase that's also been embedded in the language the press have used about the Russian stance in the war in Ukraine.

Ijsbear · 23/03/2022 13:00

@LindaEllen I'll admit I was nervous (still am a bit) but it seems quite a lot of people are doing it around and the annex was empty so ...

I'm just so angry. People should be able to lead their lives in peace to flourish (or mess up I suppose!) as they wish. It should be -their- choice. No pissant 'moth' who makes himself 'indispensible' on the way up and then ruins his own country has the right to take over another country just because he can't adapt to the fact that the cold-war world he grew up in has changed.

@ NewYear I can see why you are suspicious. It was apparently the fault of a facilities company so I'm guessing a subcontractor? Whoever it was, it won't have been their first time delivering chemicals and it sounds like a really basic mistake was made so that also makes me suspicious!

Former Ukrainian president not happy about De Spaffle's comments equating brexit to the war in Ukraine.
...and why he isn't being invited to the EU defence summit, possibly the most insulting statement he could have possibly made.

Ukraine's ambassador to the UK attended the conference -

The Ukrainian ambassador admitted to being surprised at the backlash Boris Johnson's comments sparked as he interpreted the message as a desire of both the UK and Ukraine to independently choose their future. He told Sky News: "I was sitting in the front row when I listened to it."

Russia will only accept rubles for gas deliveries to Europe: Putin

Immediately after the announcement, the ruble strengthened against the US dollars and the euro.

Putin says unfriendly countries should pay Russian gas in rubles. Except current contracts state hard currency and forward looking ones Europe wants to cut. What’s the real leverage here? Serious Q

European gas prices surge after President Putin said Russia will start demanding payments in rubles from buyers it deems 'unfriendly'

max seddon @maxseddon
Putin has ordered to make Europe pay for gas in rubles – potentially a big boost to the currency.

"The collective West has killed all trust in their currencies," he says – $ and € are "compromised" by sanctions on Russia's central bank reserves.

Silvia Merler @SMerler
#Russia is outsourcing its exchange rate management to the buyers of its gas: paying in rubles naturally props up the currency even with CBR having lost access to FX reserves. We'd be doing their job for them.

Putin: "By freezing Russian reserves, the collective West has defaulted on Russia and drawn a line under the reliability of its currencies"; says Gazprom will be converting payments for gas supplies to Europe into rubles as soon as possible

Germany, which for years said Russia won’t use gas as a weapon, is now forced into a humiliating deal - buying rubles to pay for Kremlin’s war.

My first thought on hearing about it was it’s an attack. Wasn’t chlorine gas one of the things he used in Syria? Very coincidental timing for an accident indeed, especially given I’m sure there are Russian spies living and working here so it’s unlikely to be hard to arrange an accident.

Given all the initial assurances that there was no way covid was a lab leak I think I may just keep it as possibly an attack in my mind no matter what they find.

Don't attribute malice when the simplier explanation is incompetence.

If evidence emerges to the contrary fair enough. But accident for me unless there is something suspicious.

I shall reserve judgment on the chlorine leak but I'm suspicious....

So, let's say it emerges that it is deliberate and not an accident. Then what?

StormzyinaTCup · 23/03/2022 14:16

NATO step in I would have thought, if it’s proved without any doubt.
