Pronunciations you had wrong!

I am ashamed to admit that I previously struggled with 'froth' and actually pronounced it 'throff' Blush.....there needs to be an eccentricity emoticon, I'm not that daft, I promise!

I also know someone who until her late 40's struggled with 'canopy' and pronounced it 'canape'.

DP was convinced that Moët was 'moway' as opposed to 'mwett/mowet'.

I had also previously pronounced the composer Saint-Saëns as 'san sayens' as opposed to the correct 'sahn sonz'...or something.

Anyone have any amusing ones to share?

@Nightdancer

“I also say one pronounced like gone and not as in won.”

So you say one (I say won), like ‘on’?! Mind blown!! It’s so interesting how peoples accents change words completely for people who aren’t from that area. Where are you from? I’ve never heard anyone say ‘on, two three’! I love this thread, so fascinating!

MatildaJayne · 19/03/2022 20:30

@Nightdancer, I pronounce won and one to rhyme with gone not ton. It’s weird this pronunciation thing. 🤷🏻‍♀️

FlippyFloppyFlappy · 19/03/2022 20:32

No it's one like WONN, not on.

Georgeskitchen · 19/03/2022 20:36

I found out about 3 weeks ago that hyperbole is not pronounced hyper-bowl
And nor do I know what it means 😅

WeirdArchitecture · 19/03/2022 20:38

I did wonder for a while if Marylebone was Mary-le-bone like simon le bon Grin

@LowlandLucky

WeirdArchitecture Kirkcaldy is Kir caw di
Not according to the Scots I work with. Is the pronunciation potentially regional?
Donra · 19/03/2022 20:39

I thought Moschino was pronounced Machine-o and Hermes was pronounced Herm-eez. There are several celebrity names I used to get wrong too. Orly Kiely (I was saying Keely instead of K-eye-ly). Chrissie Tiegen (I was saying Tee-gan instead of Tie-gan). Ralph Fiennes (I was saying Ralf instead of Rayf). Princess Eugenie (I was saying You-JENNY instead of YOU-zhen-ee). Probably loads more too!

Qwill · 19/03/2022 20:39

@MatildaJayne

I think it was my fault as I didn’t see the extra ‘l’ in the fillet/filet. Both my parents say filay (as in filet mignon), but fill-et if it’s fillet of beef/pork/etc.

Although this has brought back some embarrassing memories of asking for a filay-o-fish at the Highbury McDonalds as a teen! Haven’t lived that one down either!

RAOK · 19/03/2022 20:48

Yes to remuneration and meme too.

midsomermurderess · 19/03/2022 20:50

Kirkcaldy is more like Kir cuddy/cawdy.

Nightdancer · 19/03/2022 20:55

@Qwill I do. Well I don't say 'on, two, three'. I pronounce 'one' like I would swan, iyswim. I'd say won, sounding like pun, if I was announcing a lotto win...fingers crossed Grin. I'm from Yorkshire. The way I say 'year' rhymes with her rather than ear too 😂

@MatildaJayne yeah it is. I love the differences in accents and colloquialisms and dialect though.

Pegasushaswings · 19/03/2022 20:57

Wow, i never knew segue was Segway (apart from when its an actual Segway) - and its remumeration not renumeration! 😮
I dont know whether its a made up thing on he net or not but Mangetout being said as ‘man get out’ 🤣

Stroopwaffle5000 · 19/03/2022 21:03

I only found out yesterday that it's not mischievious, but mischievous. I've been pronouncing it like mis-chee-vi-ous (rhyming with previous!) 🤣

duckme · 19/03/2022 21:05

I mispronounced Hermione, the first time I read Harry Potter. I still haven't lived it down.

I mispronounce cutlery all the time. I think. I say cutle-ree. Is it cut-la-ree?

Qwill · 19/03/2022 21:05

@Nightdancer

Ok! I think I sort of see, but it’s confusing for me as I say swan like one too! Is the difference that I say s-won and you say s-wan as in ran?

My mother is from France and my father is from London so I think I probably have an odd accent! I didn’t go further north in England than north London until I was about 22, so my experience with northern dialects is pitiful!!

Terfydactyl · 19/03/2022 21:05

@midsomermurderess

I have never heard Kirkcaldy described as pretty or artistiy.
Probably cos I meant kirkudbright!!!

Soz, menopause

Nightdancer · 19/03/2022 21:08

@YouWereGr8InLittleMenstruators absolutely get that with remuneration and your explanation as to why is great. I really have to think about using the word remuneration, and often just say 'paid' instead 😂

singlepringlenotbychoice · 19/03/2022 21:12

There's a place in Fife called Touch it's pronounced "Took", made a fool of myself saying that the first time.

A guy in work was talking about a skoda citigo and called it a "skoda sit-eye-go" he must've said it about 6 times, before anyone understood what he was meaning!

Bytrgrewd · 19/03/2022 21:14

@Terfydactyl that makes more sense 🤣🤣

Bytrgrewd · 19/03/2022 21:15

Are you sure it’s not Tooch with the ch like Loch?

@WeirdArchitecture

I did wonder for a while if Marylebone was Mary-le-bone like simon le bon Grin
St Mary Le Bon originally yes
Nightdancer · 19/03/2022 21:16

@Qwill nope. I say swan like you....I think? Grin it rhymes with gone, con, Don, on. That's how I also pronounce one.

The other way I've heard people pronounce one is rhyming it with won, pun, gun, sun, done.

midsomermurderess · 19/03/2022 21:18

@Terfydactyl Ah, now Kirkudbright, yes, it is pretty and artsy😀

WeatherwaxOn · 19/03/2022 21:19

My late mum could never day 'thief' - always "feeth", and "chimley" (chimney). Dad used to day "sekkiterry" for secretary.

Whilst I know how Magdalen is pronounced (in respect of the college), I don't know why it's pronounced like that.

Justkeeprollingalong · 19/03/2022 21:21

@Bytrgrewd but Mange Tout isn't MAN- GET-OUT. It's MONJE TOOT
