So much for Brexit, workers rights, jobs for the Brits, wage increases.....

AlecTrevelyan006 · 17/03/2022 13:07

This can't end well for anyone.
The current staff are going to go whether it be today or in 2 weeks time
The public will hold the company in contempt and not book in the short term
The leaders of P&O will not easily find other jobs (its an integrity thing)
The agency staff may have short term jobs but P&O can only be going one way with this type of behaviour

Who the heck sanctioned doing this?

Honeyroar · 17/03/2022 13:13

The leaders of P&O will easily find jobs. They’ll be head hunted. They’ll have saved their company a lot of money cutting wage bills. Other companies will be looking for them to do it for them. There is no integrity nowadays, just greed.

Rules are different at sea.

I don't know whether this has any bearing on UK employment law

Manekinek0 · 17/03/2022 13:15

So apparently they can reapply for their jobs through an agency. How is this legal? I won't be travelling with P&O after this.

Grazka · 17/03/2022 13:17

Wow. Just wow! All 800 peoplesad

Has this been confirmed? Can't find anything

No, it's all still speculation
EmmaH2022 · 17/03/2022 13:17

Is this still speculation though?

RussianSpy101 · 17/03/2022 13:18

They must’ve lost a fortune recently. We should’ve cruised with them in February 2022 and couldn’t as we have children and they aren’t allowing anyone unvaccinated on board.
We booked a suite and, knowing what we paid, if they’ve lost the majority of their suite bookings across all their ships that’s a huge loss.

crackofdoom · 17/03/2022 13:18

The Guardian's just confirmed it.

Fucking wankers, I hope they go bust.

Grazka · 17/03/2022 13:19

@SoupDragon

Thank you

I hadn't found any source that didn't put "redundant" in quotation marks or say that "it is rumoured that..." or similar. No one seems to have said "this is fact"

Which doesn't mean it isn't based in fact though.

DingleyDel · 17/03/2022 13:21

This is staggering. It’s a Dubai owned company that was given MILLIONS by the U.K. government during the pandemic, all whilst paying its shareholders £££. The world needs some sort of revolution against this extreme, corrupt capitalism.

Orchidsonthetable · 17/03/2022 13:22

I don’t think their contracts are under uk empkoyment law

crackofdoom · 17/03/2022 13:23

Apparently the RMT have told the crews not to leave the ships. And there are vans full of replacement staff and security waiting at Dover and Hull.

I predict a riot...😬

SpiderinaWingMirror · 17/03/2022 13:23

Wankers indeed.

TebayOrNotTebay · 17/03/2022 13:23

If the company continues to trade, would there not need to be a consultation period under UK law? And they can't be made redundant immediately.

Only if UK law applies. The law of the flag state usually governs the relationship between crew and owners, though their employment contract might specify governing law.

Anyway didnt the UK govt block a law to prevent fire/re-hire - last year I think?

Ihaventgottimeforthis · 17/03/2022 13:23

Just being discussed on WAtO on R4.

Fuckers.

I think P&O cruises is owned by a different company now, and not part of this situation.
LizDoingTheCanCan · 17/03/2022 13:24

They've now cancelled services for the next few days.

BBC just reported it as fact on Radio 4 too.
EmmaH2022 · 17/03/2022 13:24

Soup exactly
Makes me wonder if it’s a PR disaster or a PR strategy. Let people speculate, then announce something milder than the speculation.

SpiderinaWingMirror · 17/03/2022 13:25

Issue is though that they occupy a huge sector of the market for Cross channel ferry's. If they didn't people could just boycott them. But if you have your holiday booked for the summer.....

TheFoldOx · 17/03/2022 13:25

@gogohm

What country are the ships flagged? If not U.K. or an EU country I think they can hire on lower wages basically
I thin the cross-Channel fleet ships are flagged to Cyprus (EU member sate) but the Hull and Larne ships are flagged to the Bahamas.
