As for it becoming Stalinist again, I think that's a dead cert

I look forward to (one of) Putins Daughters defecting ...

Could this catastrophe have been avoided? Comments from lots of different perspectives makes this a very interesting Twitter discussion.

Russia has now confirmed that it will restrict access to Instagram.

It comes after the social media site's parent company, Meta, changed its rules in some countries to allow the expression of violent sentiment towards Russian forces, but not towards Russian civilians.

Russia's media regulator says Instagram is distributing material calling for violent acts to be carried out against Russian citizens.

It isn't clear yet whether Instagram will be completely blocked or limited in some other way.

Access to Facebook, also owned by Meta, and Twitter has already been restricted.

This is what Russian missiles do. This shoe factory is in the middle of a residential area in #Dnipro. The security guard & his dog were killed. Many flats badly damaged. A woman was woken by her son screaming in terror. And all these Russian speakers are now furious - at Russia

Here in Egypt (Sharm el sheikh) there have been fights between Russian and Ukrainian tourists, including on dive boats. I've not seen any of this in the three days I've been here but the place is pretty empty (Russian and Ukrainian tourists are the bulk of tourists here) . I gather those stranded here are able to remain in their accomodation, not sure if that's both nationalities.

Febrier · 11/03/2022 15:18

I really don't think that this is a great idea, on Meta's part. If you have a Hate Speech Policy (preventing Hate Speech) I think it should always apply to be honest.

This on the stranded tourists in Egypt ref my post above. Just another aspect of this war.

@BeyondPurpleTulips

I haven't seen it mentioned on here yet, but Pokémon go has also been shut off in Russia (apparently it just shows a blank map if you can even log in). According to the (allegedly) Russian poster I saw talking about it, it is common knowledge there that they are being sanctioned for an illegal invasion
To clarify (since it looks like from order of posts and how Instagram is being banned) Pokemon Go has been pulled not banned.

Pokemon Go is a Nintendo / Niantic collaborative - so Japanese / American, so perhaps less of a surprise.

But its not just Pokemon Go that's been pulled. Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft have pulled all Nintendo, PlayStation and Xbox software, hardware and online community in Russia. PlayStation have also shut shops.

Tbh, its likely that no one will be able to afford them in a couple of weeks so there's commercial sense in there too, but it does highlight how grim life for young Russians in particular is going to get.

No international sport of any kind, no gaming, no Hollywood movies, no western fastfoods, no western popstars touring, no Internet, no whatsapp, no Facebook, no Instagram.

These are things they grown up with and are normal. For those who lived through the Soviet era is possibly more tolerable but the shock of this is going to be enormous.

Wow, that is a lot of tourists.

BarrowInFurnessRailwayStation · 11/03/2022 15:51

Well perhaps the military generals should do something about ousting putin. I'm no bleeding heart when it comes to the military leaders.

BREAKING: The U.S. will revoke Russia's 'permanent normal trade relations' status to punish Moscow over its invasion of Ukraine

The change, which Biden said was being taken in concert with moves by U.S. allies, would pave the way for the United States to impose tariffs on a wide range of Russian goods, heightening pressure on an economy on the brink of deep recession.

Lot's of public proclamations in Russia about this being a chance to purify the Russian economy and purify Russian culture. Sinister language but let's see what ordinary Russians really think.

I wonder if there will be a lot of smuggling from China, e.g. Apple products made in China? Will people be able to afford them. Will tech still be functional if services are blocked?

100% agree. As much as I wish someone taking him out I don’t agree with what they are proposing.
workisnotawolf · 11/03/2022 16:02

@Damnloginpopup - a close family member is currently in Dubai on work. According to him (anecdotal I know:)) most of his rather large hotel is inhabited by Russians whose credit cards are not being accepted.
I am not really sure why the Egyptian authorities insinuate that the EU is responsible for Ukrainian citizens? Morally perhaps it would be a good deed to help, but legally, no. This is Russia’s doing. Russia should be paying for the fall out from this act of aggression.

MurderAtTheBeautyPageant · 11/03/2022 16:05

Russia is going to experience an almighty brain drain. Isolated and authoritarian isn't going to be hugely appealing to those who've had a taste of a more free life.

Echoes of Brexit, really, then.

Ruskit ? Ruxit ?

I'm not sure I'd describe that as grim! It pretty much describes a third of my life Hmm

Someone’s son, father, brother, friend. Just because he’s Russian doesn’t mean it’s a good thing. All war is horrific and you put a smiley emoji on.

Yep.

Bluebellsunderthetrees · 11/03/2022 16:11

@K4fkaesque That can also apply to the officers in the West who killed civilians in the Middle East

TheWayTheLightFalls · 11/03/2022 16:18

Russia is going to experience an almighty brain drain.

It already has been for some time. Educated Russians have been leaving in droves.
