Just to add, am emailing my MP tomorrow re highlighting the potential for older people to have the option of being housed rurally. Surely there is untapped potential rather than this “only in cities” applicants nonsense.

endlesscraziness · 11/03/2022 06:45

@Furries I've just been watching BBC Breakfast and a man from the Sanctuary Foundation was on there. They will be supporting matching

Considering the need for rural farm workers, I very much doubt it'll be cities only

After the Afghan crisis, I signed up with 'Room for Refugees' as we have a big 4 bed house 40 mins from London but only use one bedroom. This was back in September. I had to fill out a long form, upload photos of the house, bedrooms and bathrooms available etc. We have never heard a thing from the charity apart from 'thank you for offering a home, we will get back to you... please lobby your MP etc.'

We had good intentions, but our offer of housing some refugees was never taken up.

Would that have been at your expense? Would there be any remuneration for this as that's quite a big commitment to open and share your home with strangers.

Motorina · 11/03/2022 07:19

There was a woman from a charity who organises these placements on R4 PM last night. Didn't catch the charity name but she was very informative, so I'd recommend a listen if anyone is thinking about this.

No, no renumeration at all. Legally there can't be, she said - something to do with their immigration status not allowing it? You're basically hosting a guest.

Wow that is so admirable of the people taking families in. It's not something I think I could do.

@EsmaCannonball

Yes, I think Boris and US politicians mentioning Russian chemical warfare is an indication they have intelligence on this.

Has everyone seen the other thread on the Irish government refusing planning permission for the Russian embassy there to build a massive underground bunker with its own power and water supply? What kind of base of operations were they hoping for there?

Hard to know if it’s specific intelligence about a known event but as a general (not v happy point) the Russian and Soviets Army before them had a more permissive doctrine when it came to using chemical weapons to facilitate an advance than the west has generally had.

That would probably make the warnings sensible but whether it shows any specific insight who knows?

EezyOozy · 11/03/2022 07:37

@Aslockton I've read that you need to live in a city to host refugees. I'm 30 mins from Edinburgh with a spare room but don't think I'd be considered as not actually in the city.

EezyOozy · 11/03/2022 07:39

@Furries yes I've read the cities thing too, I think it might be because refugees are likely to have no money for transport.

Ijsbear · 11/03/2022 07:44

Not in the UK but we've knocked our annex (self contained) into shape for a couple of refugees and also still waiting!

“You can change friends, not neighbours. China and Russia as neighbouring countries have to get along”.

I should think the leadership of China might want to be very careful how they deal with Putin. His attention is on the West but he can't help himself from trying to create weakness and trouble wherever he goes. Xi Jinping might want to watch his back.

1dayatatime · 11/03/2022 07:48

@TiddyTidTwo

"US and UK putting out this chemical warfare stuff is to prepare us. That HAS to be the red line, surely"

++++

By crossing the red line I presume you then mean NATO imposing a no fly zone., at which point NATO is at war with Russia (some could argue it already is).

NATO is considerably technically superior to the Russian forces and would win. Given that Putin has consistently demonstrated that given a choice between capitulation : humiliation and escalation he will always choose to escalate.

Faced with a superior NATO force his choice is defeat or go tactical nukes. He will go for tactical nukes at which point....

For the sake of the world we need cool heads and avoid drawing any red lines that escalate this situation.

VikingVolva · 11/03/2022 07:51

It was on sky news that Russia have asked to meet UN tomorrow for a meeting to discuss bio weapons found in Ukraine so hopefully that has been prevented now and will break out in talks rather than another war crime. We can only Hope

Battlefield use of BW is risky. But tying up yet more military/diplomatic time talking about it is likely to serve his aims.

If he really is considering BW, then it suggests that he expected a long campaign all along, and that thoughts of Russia having miscalculated might be misplaced.

That still leaves silence on CW

savyusername · 11/03/2022 07:52

Russia running off to the UN is akin to the call bully telling the teacher when they pushed back.

Feelingthepinch22 · 11/03/2022 07:56

This is so scary as an irish person what the hell... Basically transforming the Russian embassy in Dublin into a bunker with seperate water & electricity supplies... They have over 30 diplomats in Ireland, Ireland only have 4 in Russia...

RedToothBrush · 11/03/2022 08:07

James Waterhouse @jamwaterhouse
Friday 11 March:

- Explosions reported in Lutsk and Dnipro for 1st time

- Zelensky denies Russian claims that chemical weapons were developed in Ukraine

- US says it’s part of Russia looking to justify using them

- Worries large Russian convoy has redeployed & could encircle Kyiv

There's a certain grim nominative determinism that it's in "Orwell" Road ....
Papertyger · 11/03/2022 08:13

Over 30 diplomatsConfused

Aren't areoflot plane's also registered to Ireland or something like that?

botharna · 11/03/2022 08:28

Some of the world's largest airport leasing companies are based in Ireland www.irishtimes.com/business/transport-and-tourism/irish-aircraft-leasing-firms-to-sever-agreements-with-russian-airlines-1.4817878

Ireland is also a major tech hub, with most of the major players having European HQs in Ireland.

And a frontier of the EU - the Russian manoevres off Cork before the invasion of Ukraine might have been stopped but there were certainly suspicions that they were getting a bit near to the cables
www.irishtimes.com/news/environment/russian-naval-drill-to-still-take-place-over-vital-cables-experts-believe-1.4789421

“The intention is not to cut the cables, but to send a message that they can cut them anytime they want. The audience for that message is Nato, not Ireland”, an Irish military source said on Sunday. “The announcement by the [Russian] ambassador hasn’t changed that.”

@Feelingthepinch22

If it helps to reassure you, in the event of a nuclear war then Ireland is actually one of the safest countries in the world (alongside New Zealand.

It's highly unlikely to be attacked as a neutral country and the prevailing West to East winds and across the Atlantic means that it would be much affected by any nuclear fallout.

It would still suffer climate cooling making it colder and wetter but hey Ireland's weather is crap anyway.

AgnesWestern · 11/03/2022 08:51

@MagicFox I can’t read that due to the paywall.

Can you summarise what it says please?

prettybird · 11/03/2022 08:56

@AgnesWestern - you can see the title in the link. Google those exact words and see what you find Wink
