Kids don't have passports

nearlyspringyay · 08/03/2022 11:56

Kids' passports have just gone for renewal, it's maxing me anxious.

If Putin decides to nuke the UK I'd like to try and get them out to family in non NATO countries if we could. Would they be able to without a passport, how do the logistics work?

I realise I'm extrapolating, I'm more concerned with ow it would work in practice, if planes were able to fly etc etc. Do the refugees coming from Ukraine need a passport? What do you do if you don't have one?

DD2’s passport is being processed as we speak. Whilst I doubt it will be necessary, I would hope the passport rules would be flexible.

astoundedgoat · 08/03/2022 12:00

What makes you think Putin is going to drop a nuclear bomb on the UK? I've been following Ukraine very closely, and there is absolutely nothing to suggest that he will do that, least of all in the space of the three weeks you'll be waiting for the passports.

You are being excessively anxious.

(Apart from anything else, even if he did try to bomb Ukraine, his equipment is in such poor condition that the thing probably woudn't even detonate.)

AlistairCamel · 08/03/2022 12:02

My son’s is also at the passport office. I would rather it was with me right now, but I imagine passports may not matter so much in a situation where we were refugees.

WaterTheBasil · 08/03/2022 12:02

Refugees don't need passports.

If you were just flying out of the country to stay with family you would need passports and a visa if applicable. You can't just go and live and work in any country you want. You would have to plan now how you would access your money.

FourTeaFallOut · 08/03/2022 12:07

I mean, what are the chances airplanes would be taking off in that scenario? How much would a seat on one of them cost? Who do you think would be turning up to work that day to check your passport?

Woollystockings · 08/03/2022 12:10

Well, judging what the U.K. is requesting of Ukrainian refugees, you need more than passports - you need to get a visa, have family in the country, etc. Obviously, if Putin decided to nuke the U.K., it’d be too late for making plans for your dc then. You’ve no doubt seen how welcoming- not - the U.K. has been to refugees.

HavfrueDenizKisi · 08/03/2022 12:22

If Putin decided to nuke the UK you'd have about 20 mins notice to get to an airport and get on a flight. Good luck with that.

Time to try and work harder on your anxiety I would say.

irishfarmer · 08/03/2022 12:30

I think you are panicking over nothing. If Putin nukes the UK (unlikely). Where would UK nationals flee to? Unless you live in NI you have no land boarder with any one else. Flights would be grounded. Your options would be to come to Ireland (where you don't need passports in the CTA anyway just ID) or France by boat. If the UK is under attack I wouldn't think much of mainland Europe would be better. I'd say your best option would be to try get out of the main cities in the UK.

Same in Ireland btw, we would have no where to flee to, but I highly highly doubt we will be attacked unless they miss England! Or well the Russian navy were off out coast only a few weeks ago for "training" exercise Confused so maybe. But really no point in panicking about it.

BrieAndChilli · 08/03/2022 12:36

if we get nuked then having a passport or not wont make much difference!! in a refugee situation i think to get to any other country as a refugee (as opposed to a specific one of your choosing) then lack of klids passports hopefully wouldnt matter.
BUT like you my kids passports are being renewed and I admit I feel a slight discomfort that if things start looking bad we cant just hop on a plane out of here before it goes to hell! I've had messages to say they have been printed and posted back to us so I will feel better when I have them in my hand.

Aposterhasnoname · 08/03/2022 12:39

If Putin nukes the uk (spoiler alert, he won’t) then no one’s going anywhere.

Chikapu · 08/03/2022 12:41

Do you think you'll get a months notice of his intention to nuke? How on earth do you expect to have time to get them anywhere?

ApolloandDaphne · 08/03/2022 12:43

I doubt Putin would give notice if he was about to press the big red button. No-one will be getting on planes to anywhere if he does.

Hollyhead · 08/03/2022 12:44

I think from
The U.K. it would be hard to be a refugee to anywhere unless you were part of a specific group that were being persecuted - escaping an island is much harder than fleeing across land boarders.

Comedycook · 08/03/2022 12:45

In the nicest possible way...get a grip.

drawingpad · 08/03/2022 12:45

I can't wrap my head around the idea of moving from a NATO country to a non NATO country in an attempt to protect yourself against someone who is attacking a non NATO country

megletthesecond · 08/03/2022 12:46

You'll be lucky to leave your town if we get nuked.

You won't be getting anywhere near an airport.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 08/03/2022 12:48

If Putin drops a nuclear bomb on us, do you really think transport will be operating as normal? You will not have time to get your kids out of the country. Think.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 08/03/2022 12:50

And he isn't going to invade the UK in the same way he has invaded Ukraine. We are an island for a start which makes in more difficult. Plus NATO would then get involved.

hilbil21 · 08/03/2022 12:54

Thanks for the reminder I need to renew my child's passport. Albeit to go on holiday ... but thanks! Grin

Woollystockings · 08/03/2022 12:55

If there’s no war, your DC won’t be refugees and won’t get visas for any country - unless they perhaps have dual nationality.
If there is one, they won’t be going anywhere.

TwoCoffeesPlease · 08/03/2022 12:56

I think you need some support for your anxiety. The situation you have described is very unlikely to happen.

Parpophone · 08/03/2022 12:57

If Putin nukes the UK, how exactly do you imagine you will be leaving?

If Russia invades the UK same question applies.

Have you not seen any of the footage from the Ukraine? They aren't rocking up to the airport and having a quick browse in the duty free are they?

I very much doubt you will be booking your family on a Ryanair flight FFS.

JodieFoster1 · 08/03/2022 12:59

Take a break from the news and social media. If you can get some fresh air in your garden / local park. Try to relax.

HistoryKitty · 08/03/2022 13:04

Where are you going to take your kids to as refugees from the UK, the Isle of Wight?

That's the one thing about living on an island, its great for making an invasion difficult, but if the invading force's boots get on the ground, you're not going anywhere. The first thing to be taken out apart from military bases will be the ports and airports.

NameChanger45465465 · 08/03/2022 13:04

I think your anxiety is a huge problem.

When would you realistically ship them to family? if Putin chucked a nuke our way, he isnt going to give you warning long enough to book an easyjet flight.
