Evening wedding reception food - Dominos!?

I’m having an evening only wedding reception in a few months and we are really struggling with the catering side of things. We will be having a ceremony around 3/4pm for 1 hour, then onto photos at the church grounds, and people will go straight to the venue from there. We aren’t doing a sit down meal as we want a more relaxed vibe.

We are seriously thinking about ordering a large quantity of dominos pizzas to the venue and having a pizza buffet. We LOVE pizza as a couple and feel like it’s a bit different to the standard wedding hot buffet. (the venue doesn’t really have outside access so a pizza truck wouldn’t work, hence a takeaway option).

We were thinking of having sides at the start of the buffet table (pasta, salad, coleslaw, crisps, cocktail sausages & breadsticks) & then the rest would be pizza.

What is your thoughts on this? Would you be mortified if you turned up to a wedding reception and had pizza? Or would you prefer a standard finger buffet?

Also how many people would you say could share a large dominos pizza? This will help up with quantities etc.

It sounds amazing to me. I could live on Dominoes burger pizzas. Gherkins on pizzas! Best thing ever.

rattlemehearties · 06/03/2022 15:38

This is a nice idea but far better value would be to ask a local pizza restaurant to cater using their takeaway menu. Dominos is so expensive and not great quality for the price.

I'd check no one is avoiding wheat, gluten or dairy!

I think it would work out insanely expensive

P0gM0Th0in · 06/03/2022 15:39

Domino’s, apologies. I wish there was an edit button.

OneMoreTimeThen · 06/03/2022 15:40

I would love it! Buffets are a bit hit and miss I think. It does bank on everyone liking pizza though, there's a few in my family who don't like pizza

Chemenger · 06/03/2022 15:40

Pizza yes, Domino’s no, there must be a better pizza option available.

Paperyfish · 06/03/2022 15:41

I think it’d be great. If you like pizza go for it. I love pizza and usually find the sit down dinners a bit dull anyway. However, I doubt I could have eaten pizza in my wedding dress with out a big cheesy greasy stain down the front. Maybe do lots of napkins and finger bowls too!

trevthecat · 06/03/2022 15:41

I love pizza, love it and would love it as a guest. I also really like domino's but would prefer from a little local company. I know domino's is fresh etc but it's not like real Italian pizza

Whinge · 06/03/2022 15:41

It sounds like it could end up being really expensive and a headache for anyone with dietary requirements.

Batinhernightdress · 06/03/2022 15:41

How many guests?

rainbowandglitter · 06/03/2022 15:41

Domino's is disgusting so I'd be hungry. Would you offer an alternative?

Sprig1 · 06/03/2022 15:42

Sounds good to me but I find Domino's really expensive so also would try and find a local Italian restaurant that could do it for you.

SuperheroBirds · 06/03/2022 15:42

I would love it! Let’s be honest, a lot of buffet food can be a bit hit and miss, but you can rarely go wrong with pizza

Soontobe60 · 06/03/2022 15:43

Just no!
If you’ve only got a handful of guests, it would be a possibility, but if you needed to order for 100 people, you’re going to get cold pizza and sides. Someone’s going to take a whole pizza, and how do you cater for vegans, or other dietary needs?
The timing of your wedding means it’s not just an evening reception. To get to a ceremony that starts at 3pm, people will most likely leave home at 1pm or earlier, so will not have eaten possibly since breakfast. If they’re then presented with pizza at 7pm they’ll be starving! They’ll all be leaving at 8pm to nip to the chippy!

WouldBeGood · 06/03/2022 15:43

Brilliant idea @Discolady123 😃 Sounds a trillion times better than the usual wedding fare.

Traumdeuter · 06/03/2022 15:43

Pizza buffet: yes. Dominos: no. Do you have a good independent local place?

hawkinspawkins · 06/03/2022 15:44

I love pizza but Domino's is not wedding food

At least get italian pizza

Abcdefu · 06/03/2022 15:44

Love pizza, but no domino's. Would use a local place with sour dough base / wood fire oven

katienana · 06/03/2022 15:46

I'd like it but it definitely wouldn't please everyone.

scandihouse · 06/03/2022 15:47

Sounds good to me! I went to a wedding which served pizza and it was very popular

Sidge · 06/03/2022 15:49

Errr no. Even with sides of pasta, salad etc I’d be unimpressed with just pizza. Stodgy, bloating and a nightmare for people with dietary issues.

A very expensive way of offering a cheap feed.

Snoopsnoggysnog · 06/03/2022 15:49

How many people is this for?

I think it would be very difficult to keep hot so everyone would have cold pizza. Also, are you planning to make the pasta and salads yourselves? Would the venue store and serve these for you?

I wouldn’t do this personally as it’s the sort of menu I’d serve at a kids birthday party but it might work if you’re going for a very casual vibe and venue.

Also a regular finger buffet wouldn’t work because although you’ve described it as an evening reception, you’ll have people there from 3pm through the evening so you will have to feed them a proper meal. So pizza would be better than a finger buffet in that case.

Givemeallthegin8 · 06/03/2022 15:50

I think that sounds amazing !! Would love a dominos at a wedding!

Buildingthefuture · 06/03/2022 15:51

Honestly? Not my cup of tea but it’s your wedding so you chose what you want!
