Evening wedding reception food - Dominos!?

Discolady123 · 06/03/2022 15:37

I’m having an evening only wedding reception in a few months and we are really struggling with the catering side of things. We will be having a ceremony around 3/4pm for 1 hour, then onto photos at the church grounds, and people will go straight to the venue from there. We aren’t doing a sit down meal as we want a more relaxed vibe.

We are seriously thinking about ordering a large quantity of dominos pizzas to the venue and having a pizza buffet. We LOVE pizza as a couple and feel like it’s a bit different to the standard wedding hot buffet. (the venue doesn’t really have outside access so a pizza truck wouldn’t work, hence a takeaway option).

We were thinking of having sides at the start of the buffet table (pasta, salad, coleslaw, crisps, cocktail sausages & breadsticks) & then the rest would be pizza.

What is your thoughts on this? Would you be mortified if you turned up to a wedding reception and had pizza? Or would you prefer a standard finger buffet?

Also how many people would you say could share a large dominos pizza? This will help up with quantities etc.

I think it's always going to be risky going for just one food type. People on this thread moaning about boring, generic sit down meals - well, at least at those you usually get a starter, main course and dessert. Even if you don't like the meat or whatever of the mains, there's usually some potatoes and veg etc that goes with it that you can eat. No-one's ever been to a wedding and been left unable to eat NOTHING of a 3 course sit down meal. Usually those who are vegetarian or have other allergies are specially catered for. But for someone like my dad, who has to have a really low fat diet because of galllstone issues, he wouldn't be able to eat ANY pizza at all, and would be left with nothing to eat if that was all that were being served.

So if you're going to do a one trick pony type of catering then I'd have a rethink. Give an option for the people who can't actually eat that particular type of item.

@LovelyRita1

It's really shitty to serve a cold roast or dry chicken as well and everybody generally complains about it yet it's still the done thing.

I went to a wedding with an afternoon tea once. Now that was nice! Nothing to go cold or dry out and not once tiny bit of beef with a single carrot to be seen 😄
I don't see what pizza has to do with class 🤣 how ridiculous

Oh no, I think you've misunderstood my point quattro! I was not saying it would be shitty to serve pizza or that pizza had anything do with class. That would be a bit silly wouldn't it 🤣🤣?

Read my comment again. It was the comment by widdlin which i thought was lacking in class, nothing the op has said or done. HTH

Oh! Yep totally misunderstood Grin sorry!

I would bloody love that!

To be fair to the OP, she wrote in her opening post that We were thinking of having sides at the start of the buffet table (pasta, salad, coleslaw, crisps, cocktail sausages & breadsticks) & then the rest would be pizza.

And she also said that they'd asked in advance about dietary issues and no-one has any.

Icemast · 06/03/2022 19:51

Hahaha yes always a cold roast and dry chicken Grin. I don't agree that a 3 course meal guarantees everyone can eat something, I nearly fell off my chair when after a particularly bland offering my friend said how much they paid per head!

PatientlyWaiting21 · 06/03/2022 19:51

Right up my street!

SpinningTheSeedsOfLove · 06/03/2022 19:51

OP's second post in:

We have already asked for dietary requirements and no one has any

A580Hojas · 06/03/2022 19:52

I'd prefer KFC. One of them big buckets, and a side of beans AND a side of coleslaw.

Oh man, I would JUDGE beyond belief . It’s the rankest of food Envy.

‘Come celebrate our marriage! Wear your lovely clothes! Buy us a gift! Eat cheap, shit fried food! Enjoy!’

(But I know you’re taking the piss)

astoundedgoat · 06/03/2022 19:57

I don’t think it can be done. You need a pizza oven to make pizzas. No pizzeria, indie or Dominos (which is a pretty grim, not to say expensive choice), has the capacity to do more than about 6 at a time. Having them “rolling” in will lead to a very long eating period with huge numbers of guests waiting for AGES to be fed.

We had a local Indian restaurant cater our wedding reception. It was all vegetarian, super cheap and everyone was surprised and surprisingly happy! Each group of people had four different dishes to choose from, naans and rice.

I cannot emphasise how cheap a vegetarian Indian feast is.

MondeoFan · 06/03/2022 19:58

It's a yes from me love pizza and love dominos

Sarah13xx · 06/03/2022 19:58

OMG I COULD HAVE WRITTEN THIS! I am trying to organise the exact same thing at the moment. Hate being the centre of attention but feel like I could ‘cope’ with the attention at a reception after a few drinks and just be able to enjoy myself. Hate the thought of a serious day time wedding where everyone’s sitting in silence waiting for a speech about how we met 🙈 can honestly think of nothing worse. It’s your day, just because millions of people do it the same way doesn’t mean you have to. I feel like somethings I’m considering are more based on meeting other people’s expectations rather than actually because I want it. Really scaling it back now and purely having the reception with immediate family there for a quick ceremony outside in the daytime. Dominos is my favourite food on earth, that and cake! So if I turned up and someone had dominos and cake I’d be beside myself😂❤️ Who cares what anyone else thinks, do it!!

fanontonight · 06/03/2022 19:58

Your wedding, your choice. Do what you want not what you think will others want xx

Same. We went to a very expensive wedding once and the food was just awful. Cold onion soup followed by cold roast which literally was a tiny bit of hard beef, one roasted new potato, one carrot and one head of broccoli each with cold gravy. It took about an hour to come out. Pudding was the only edible bit. Several guests went to McDonald's after that and came back! Price meant nothing in that situation!
Hankunamatata · 06/03/2022 20:01

I think my only concern would be that they wouldn't be overly warm with such large quantity

HelloDaisy · 06/03/2022 20:03

Sounds like a great idea. Ask your local Domino’s if they could cater it, if not not what about finding a local pizzeria or mobile pizza van though as they may stay warmer too…

My db had their local Indian restaurant for their wedding meal who came and set up at the venue with warming dishes etc. It worked out really well. It was a marquee wedding in a field and they set their tables up outside the tents.

Donson · 06/03/2022 20:04

Decent Pizza - I would delighted
Dominos pizza - I would think you couldn’t really be bothered Grin

HestersSamplerofCarrots · 06/03/2022 20:05

Pizza, yes

Domino, no

Takeaway, no - it’ll be cold, dry, and hard before anyone gets to it

Donson · 06/03/2022 20:15

Are there not other options like a local italian ?
I organised a party where a nearby Italian made big trays of meat and veggie lasagnas, pastas, salads for 50 people.
Another time a local Lebanese place brought trays of falafels, salads, dips, breads, savory filled pastries for 80 people.

Food was plentiful, great and affordable. Everyone ate and was full.

hashbrownsandwich · 06/03/2022 20:34

@TristesseDurera

I'm Jewish - along with approximately 99% of all Jews and also people of Asian heritage, I can't digest lactose. In fact only about 35% of the world's adult population can digest lactose.

Approximately 65 percent of the human population has a reduced ability to digest lactose after infancy. Lactose intolerance in
adulthood is most prevalent in people of East Asian descent, with 70 to 100 percent of people affected in these communities. Lactose intolerance is also very common in people of West African, Arab, Jewish, Greek, and Italian descent.

medlineplus.gov/genetics/condition/lactose-intolerance/#frequency

However, if you're going to have a wedding of well over 100 people made up entirely of white people of Northern European descent, you'll probably be OK in terms of that aspect - only about 5% of Northern Europeans are lactose intolerant.

Add to that the high proportion of people who don't like or can't digest gluten/wheat, the people who can't have tomato/nightshades and the people who just don't like pizza, and I guess, depending on demographics, you might find that about half of your guests are OK with it.

Not sure why you would do this really.

There's always one fun sponge isn't there?

stuntbubbles · 06/03/2022 20:40

Ooh, fun sponge for pudding. Get it delivered.

Bloodybridget · 06/03/2022 21:09

Very surprised to see TristesseDurera's statement that 99% of Jews are lactose intolerant. I spent a year on a kibbutz when I was young, mostly working in the kitchen; lots of dairy foods served every day and I never heard anyone mention it. And none of our Jewish friends are.

WiddlinDiddlin · 06/03/2022 21:15

@LovelyRita1

Wow - one would hope you were there to enjoy sharing the occasion of your friends wedding. What happens if you don't like something - don't have it. The chances of EVERYONE attending a wedding getting to have their favourite food is pretty much nil.

But if the only food on offer is pizza, that's quite different to the usual wedding where there is often a starter, choice of mains and dessert. Not saying op is U to do things differently, but the poster you quoted isn't U to question it from the perspective of a guest.

Anyway, op said she knew a few guests didn't like pizza and would have an alternative.

It would be such shitty hosting to say "wow, I'd like to think you're here to see me getting married and not just expecting your favourite food", but clearly, op has some class

Except pizza wouldn't be the only food on offer, if you care to read the OP's post again..

We were thinking of having sides at the start of the buffet table (pasta, salad, coleslaw, crisps, cocktail sausages & breadsticks)

Thats really rather a lot more than just pizza, and as you have spotted, she's providing alternatives for some anyway.

Who is telling guests that? Where did I say you should tell guests that? It would indeed be shitty hosting, I don't see anyone recommending that - again, the OP is offering a variety of foods and alternatives for those who need it.

But I do think leaving a wedding early because its not your favourite food is pretty shitty, as a previous poster or two has suggested!

Sorry, my mistake - it's 75%
