Evening wedding reception food - Dominos!?

Discolady123 · 06/03/2022 15:37

I’m having an evening only wedding reception in a few months and we are really struggling with the catering side of things. We will be having a ceremony around 3/4pm for 1 hour, then onto photos at the church grounds, and people will go straight to the venue from there. We aren’t doing a sit down meal as we want a more relaxed vibe.

We are seriously thinking about ordering a large quantity of dominos pizzas to the venue and having a pizza buffet. We LOVE pizza as a couple and feel like it’s a bit different to the standard wedding hot buffet. (the venue doesn’t really have outside access so a pizza truck wouldn’t work, hence a takeaway option).

We were thinking of having sides at the start of the buffet table (pasta, salad, coleslaw, crisps, cocktail sausages & breadsticks) & then the rest would be pizza.

What is your thoughts on this? Would you be mortified if you turned up to a wedding reception and had pizza? Or would you prefer a standard finger buffet?

Also how many people would you say could share a large dominos pizza? This will help up with quantities etc.

There's always one fun sponge isn't there?

Yeah, pointing out that OP is suggesting serving a menu that's unsuitable for everyone except white Europeans (and anyone who can't eat gluten/wheat/tomatoes/dairy or who doesn't like pizza) is so un-fun, isn't it? Lol.

I wld love that lol. If it's a small number of people it would work. Maybe gd idea to through in some sides like chicken kickers (think that's what they r called). I think though, that many pizzas delivered and then placed out would be cold by time most ppl got to them if it's a large number of people.

I actually went to a friends bday party and she had a buffet that had been done by a local takeaway company. She had pizzas, Indian curry, rice, naan, pakora, spiced onions popadoms etc and it was all still warm by time I got to it. Was fabulous too!

OP's second post in:

We have already asked for dietary requirements and no one has any

I would love this. But both my parents would struggle with pizza even though they dont have a standard requirement, they are not vegan, veggie, intolerant. My Dad has a stoma and my mum has a hiatus hernia. In a buffet its likely there will be some things they can eat and sone they can't. By providing pizza as the only main food option it is a bit limited, not everyone is happy discussing their digestive issues.

I WANT TO COME TO THIS WEDDING

FazedNotPhased · 06/03/2022 21:38

Yikes, I'm Jewish and obviously know loads of Jews. Not one is lactose intolerant. Although perhaps they're just going home and shitting themselves silly 🤷‍♀️

Wouldn't thank you for a Dominos anyway though to be fair Grin

I bet you anything that many of them are. I didn't know for certain until I had my DNA sequenced last year - just thought I had general digestive issues. As do my parents and lots of my relatives, none of whom would formally call themselves l.i.

75% of Jews worldwide (and a higher % of Ashkenazi Jews) are lactose intolerant (as are almost all humans outside Northern Europe).

The probability that no Jews you know are lactose intolerant is incredibly low.

A friend ordered in pizza for the evening part of a relaxed wedding. It was a very good local pizza place they loved, not Dominos. Every one loved it but there was not enough! She just told them how many and left them to it. Proper Italian pizza though-go with half a pizza each then add. Some people take the piss.

You think only white Europeans eat pizza...?

I think it’s very possible that lots of people don’t know / have any Jewish people within their family or friendship group, especially if it’s a mainly family wedding.

I grew up in quite a small town in rural England and honestly honestly had never know a Jewish person until I started work around age 21. I wouldn’t have any Jewish people at my wedding now, although I have a few Jewish colleagues.

I think most people know their attendee lists pretty well!

I’m not white or European, I love eating pizza.

hashbrownsandwich · 06/03/2022 22:12

For clarification I am of Jewish heritage on one side of my family. So I made my comment with a clear conscience.

Anyway OP, I think pizza is a great idea.

Yes, but as in the link I posted, it's not just Jewish people- that's just my example as it applies to me personally.

Worldwide only about 35% of adults can digest lactose, and almost all of them are northern European. Almost no one of Asian descent has the enzymes to process dairy.

@simonjt most of the Jews & Asians I know also eat pizza. They also mostly have horrible digestive issues! I had no idea I was lactose intolerant until I had my dna sequenced last year. It made a lot of sense.

Traditional Asian cuisine (particularly east Asian) is more or less dairy free. I know that there is paneer and yoghurt in indian/Pakistani/bengali cooking but chinese/Japanese/Korean/Thai food is more or less dairy free (possibly why it's so popular with Jews...!)

Not sure why your parent's ethnic background comes into it, it's not nice to dismiss genuine considerations when I was trying to answer the op's question.

Pizza contains a lot of food groups that cause problems for many people, and unlike many other types of food, you can't easily separate it out. And it's greasy and grim.

Pizza is for kids' birthdays or student parties. Not weddings.

Sounds ideal to me!

Cleanbedlinen12 · 06/03/2022 23:31

If it helps ( and it probably doesn’t) a chum at the best wedding we went to, had lots of different cheese, fruits, exotic bits and trays of sarnies and cakes from Costco. As a pp mentioned. They hired someone to cook something hot, maybe it was a chip van or a roast pig person, and later at night served hot Cornish pasties. ( which went down really well) . Another wedding had an enormous paella cooked on the spot . which was fab and cheapish. Agree with others re the logistics of hot pizza to so many and the cost and greasy fingers of dominos. They somehow don’t fill you up either!
You could possibly take a microwave or hotpot thingy and a volunteer to heat up a few hotdogs or something?Super easy . If there is an oven there, Costco again, do enormous pizza for 7 or £8. …or ask everyone to bring a dish...Good luck!

This sounds like the best wedding in the world. Love it!
