Evening wedding reception food - Dominos!?

Discolady123 · 06/03/2022 15:37

I’m having an evening only wedding reception in a few months and we are really struggling with the catering side of things. We will be having a ceremony around 3/4pm for 1 hour, then onto photos at the church grounds, and people will go straight to the venue from there. We aren’t doing a sit down meal as we want a more relaxed vibe.

We are seriously thinking about ordering a large quantity of dominos pizzas to the venue and having a pizza buffet. We LOVE pizza as a couple and feel like it’s a bit different to the standard wedding hot buffet. (the venue doesn’t really have outside access so a pizza truck wouldn’t work, hence a takeaway option).

We were thinking of having sides at the start of the buffet table (pasta, salad, coleslaw, crisps, cocktail sausages & breadsticks) & then the rest would be pizza.

What is your thoughts on this? Would you be mortified if you turned up to a wedding reception and had pizza? Or would you prefer a standard finger buffet?

Also how many people would you say could share a large dominos pizza? This will help up with quantities etc.

People are very snobby against dominos but if you like it then why not! Presumably you've asked about dietary requirements on the RSVPs or will be- I'd consider that and also contact the local branch to check they could coordinate a huge order. I'd prefer it to most wedding meals and buffets though, they do gluten free and vegan ones which is good.

hashbrownsandwich · 06/03/2022 15:52

How many pizzas are you intending to share between how many guests?
You know how MN love a pizza sharing question Wink

More importantly, can I come? Grin

Dominos do both gluten free and vegan. It’s a great idea and not expensive at all, far cheaper than a regular wedding breakfast. Even a whole pizza each would only be £9 pp max , you can always get bogoff.

*whole large pizza

LovelyRita1 · 06/03/2022 15:54

Hmmm I'd need some warning as I frigging hate pizza, especially domino's. But that's my personal taste and I'm not against it because I think it wouldn't be appropriate. I just realy don't like it

Loopytiles · 06/03/2022 15:54

Agree it’s not just an evening do with those timings.

I love pizza! Dominoes not great though, it’d be an expensive option, and pizza gets cold quickly.

It would be right up my street but I think you might find it hard to get a Dominoes to effectively close to other customers for a couple hours on what I presume would be a Fri/Sat night to complete your order? Also yes to being very expensive!

Loopytiles · 06/03/2022 15:56

Your OP mentions a ‘finger buffet’ and also a ‘hot buffet’.

If the venue has facilities to keep and serve food warm, salads, sides, pizza and pasta could work.

hawkinspawkins · 06/03/2022 15:58

The pizza truck would be amazing. Does the venue not even have a parking spot?

gogohm · 06/03/2022 15:58

I personally wouldn't like, I'm gluten intolerant and dislike gf pizza (and bread) . Traditional wedding menus are fine generally as potatoes are served and I can tolerate a little gluten eg in gravy but pizza and pasta are no nos.

Loopytiles · 06/03/2022 15:58

Even with the new timings, still not an ‘evening do’.

How many DC, of what ages?

I don’t think that’s quite enough pizza, but you’ll have seen the threads on that issue!

RavenclawsRoar · 06/03/2022 15:59

Sounds great to me!

Moonshine5 · 06/03/2022 16:00

No.

LemonDrizzles · 06/03/2022 16:00

Sounds great. Always try to do what works best for the day, not other pre conceived notions :)

You can still order in advance, especially as to how you can best identify special dietary requirements and then match those pizzas on the day to guests in question.

Also, are planning on keeping pizza warm?

Consider checking out movie betsys wedding re pizza being served at weddings....

All the very best wishes for your upcoming day

Shiningpath · 06/03/2022 16:00

A pizza truck or someone turning up with one of those mobile ovens would be really fun but just calling out for a big Domino’s order, not so much.

Christmas1988 · 06/03/2022 16:02

My husband would be made up! I think it’s a bit messy, greasy fingers with wedding attire don’t really mix but if it’s what you want and you like then stuff what other people think have what you want at your wedding.

Whinge · 06/03/2022 16:03

110 guest plus children Shock

from your OP I thought it would be a much smaller wedding, i'm not sure 65 pizzas will be enough, and I can't see how a takeaway would be able to make and send that many whilst still keeping them hot. I'm also surprised you don't have any dietary requirements with such a large number. Do you have any other ideas, and what food does the venue offer?

Snoopsnoggysnog · 06/03/2022 16:03

Pizza truck wouldn’t work either with that many people would it? They can only make a few pizzas at a time so would take ages to feed everyone.

chesirecat99 · 06/03/2022 16:04

If you go by the thread from a few days ago where the FIL was called stingy for only ordering 3 slices of pizza per person, it seems most people expect a large pizza to themselves Hmm. I would have thought you could have something far nicer for £10 pp.

Personally, I hate pizza. I also know I would end up with the topping dripping off onto my lovely probably dry clean only dress.

TunnelOfGoats · 06/03/2022 16:04

You could see if you could get a pizza chef with portable wood fired oven to make pizzas to order for your guests on site? That would also allow for smaller, personal sized ones for those who eat less. You could make nice mock menus and ask people to order in advance too so quicker and no wastage for the caterers

TwoCoffeesPlease · 06/03/2022 16:04

Lovely in theory but I would use a local take away rather than domino’s as domino’s is quite overpriced really. I would want to order half a large per person + sides. Might sound like too much to some but you have to account for people coming back for more when they’ve had a few and there’s nothing worse than undercatering at an event

Loopytiles · 06/03/2022 16:04

Pizza trucks often don’t have much capacity, would be hard to make 65+ pizzas quickly. OK for a smaller do or evening food after dancing, but probably not feasible to feed 100+

Discolady123 · 06/03/2022 16:04

I'm more confused than ever after this thread 😂😂😂

Are people going to be able to sit down and eat this or will it be finger food? Dominos is greasy but if you go independent, proper Italian pizza can be a nightmare to try and eat without getting in a mess. I also would be worried about people queuing and ending up with lukewarm pizza. 110 people is a lot to get through a buffet. I am biased though as I dislike buffets generally. If I make an effort and have my glad rags on, I am not keen on queuing up for food and then eating it standing up.
