The invasion is a Week Old...Part 7

Unbelievable. Thread 6 is almost full, to be found here : www.mumsnet.com/Talk/_chat/4495271-The-Invasion-is-ongoing-Part-6?pg=1

Still a fascinating and thoughtful set of documentation of our evolving thoughts, fears, questions, analyses and updates. And still a credit to the eyes, ears and knowledge of those on here.

Pinched from one poster on thread 6 whose name I can't recall:

Latest claims from both sides about casualties
Ukraine's army regularly puts out updates on the damage it says it's inflicting on Russian forces, which continue to press on key cities, particularly in the south.

We should stress that the BBC can't verify this information, but the latest update from the General Staff of the Armed Forces says that approximately 9,000 Russian personnel have been killed or wounded.

It also says Ukrainian forces have destroyed:

217 tanks
90 artillery systems
31 helicopters
30 planes or other aircraft
For its part, Russia yesterday for the first time gave a specific number for casualties it had suffered in Ukraine, saying 498 Russian soldiers had died and nearly 1,600 had been wounded.

It said it had killed 2,870 Ukrainian soldiers and "nationalists".

I know placemarking is frowned upon sometimes, I'm doing it here because these threads have been balanced and informative and by clicking straight to it rather than going to active/chat I'm avoiding scrolling any alarming titles and also being drawn into spending more time on social media reading about it than I should

Snuginagrobag · 03/03/2022 21:03

Thank you to everyone contributing!

Thank you everyone. I'm reading but it's going too quick for me to post most of the time!

The EU has agreed to grant temporary residence to Ukrainians fleeing the war, for up to three years.

EU ministers gave the plans the green light at a meeting in Brussels today.

The bloc's triggered a mechanism - that’s never been used before - to allow Ukrainian nationals and their families the right to work, education and welfare.

The EU says that those who held long-term residence or refugee status in Ukraine would also be covered - either by the directive or national rules. And that temporary workers or students, who aren't eligible, would be helped to get home.

Earlier reports from Hungary suggested the government there did not support the plans.

However the Commission described today's decision as "unanimous", after some modifications.

Full details are expected tomorrow.

Can anyone give me a balanced view on what the likely scenario end games are for this?

Is putin likely to wage war on the west once the stockmarket opens again and its collapsed or will he likely keep it closed until after the invasion.

Also once the invasion has reached its conclusion. What happens with the sanctions? Will they just slowly start to do business with russia again and un freezing assets without making a big deal of it. Surely it would make sense to start offering up releasing of sanctions in return for ceasefire etc? Or is this likely all going on behind closed doors between the west and Russia?

Alexandra2001 · 03/03/2022 21:08

Hope those numbers are accurate, the savagery of the Russians is awful & they deserve all they get but the poor Ukrainians, you look at the devastation and think that there must be so many civilian deaths.

On sanctions, there are moves from some senators in the US to have assets seized rather than frozen.

Placemark, with a quick thank you to everyone for their contributions on the previous threads.

I can only hope that the sanctions, and they are completely unprecedented... can be enough of a trigger to make someone move against Putin. There is a lot of wealth and power in Russia, and the country has become a pariah overnight almost. Hope that will grind the war machine to a halt. 🇺🇦

Gingerwarthog · 03/03/2022 21:14

@Oakleaffy
Yes I know. A poster on an earlier thread was talking about wheelchair users and how hard it would be for them to escape and/or to deal with the incredible hardships of being in a city under siege.
Some local groups (such as the Rabbi in Kyiv and his volunteers mentioned in a few posts upthread) are trying to help and said that they had been trying to buy as much food/ bottled water as possible.

This is my thinking. It will come down to $$$ in the end.

That's a bit heartless. Many of the Russian soldiers are conscripted, a lot of them are very young and there are reports that they were kept in the dark about what they were being sent into.

Every death of a civilian or common soldier in this war is a senseless waste.

Hungary is always the outlier!

How did it even makes it onto the EU?

It's easy to feel proper visceral hatred for the people doing this to the Ukrainians. More than likely there are many bad apples in the bunch doing terrible things, however, many of these Russians (as in WW2) are very young, very terrified young men from rural parts of deepest, poorest Russia with no real education and no real idea what they are doing there. There are lots of accounts coming through that they were told they were only there on a military exercise, many of them are simply laying down arms and walking away or surrendering themselves to local police stations. Indeed many are probably brainwashed (having seen the people in charge talk this is really not that hard to believe). If we start losing our humanity now it will be at the worst possible time. Even the Ukrainians are treating Russian soldiers with kindness. The only death I will truly celebrate is Putin's. That maybe hypocritical but the world would be much safer for it.

Slightly off-topic, using less gas would be one way to reduce the amount of money going to Russia.

Turn down heating by 1C to reduce need for Russian imports, Europeans told
IEA says reducing temperature could help wean consumers off fuel that Russia is using as a weapon in Ukraine war

An international cat federation has said it's banning all Russian cats from entering its competitions.

In a statement on its website the Fédération Internationale Féline said it was "horrified" by Russia's invasion of Ukraine and had subsequently decided to disallow Russian cats from competing in its competitions, which take place around the world.

As well as this, it said that no cats bred in Russia would be allowed to be registered with its organisation outside of Russia.

The rules will be in place until the end of May, when they will be reviewed.

It added that it would dedicate a part of its budget to support cat breeders in Ukraine who are suffering because of the current situation.

Thanks for the new thread.

I've also wondered the same about sanctions and if they are to try and stop the war against Ukraine or if they are permanent if they continue and then seize it.

Peregrina · 03/03/2022 21:37

Turn down heating by 1C to reduce need for Russian imports, Europeans told

Meanwhile, in the independent from the EU global UK, we have to turn down our heating, which doesn't afaik come from Russia, because we won't be able to pay the bills.

MumbleCrumbs · 03/03/2022 21:38

John Brennan (former CIA) detective just told MSNBC he thinks Putin's days are numbered, probably to double digits. Hopefully he has some info we don't!
