I note the air b and b trend is picking up traction, many of my friends shave booked rooms to inject money in directly to the economy, and owners are coming back thanking them saying they will pass the money on to aid and volunteer groups on the ground.

Some people are trying to source the business that are mass cooking and preparing food for the people sheltering in bunkers to give them funds to continue their work.

HeadPain · 03/03/2022 15:08

Also, is it accurate that we made Ukraine give up their nuclear weapons upon the promise we would protect them...?

alltheapples · 03/03/2022 15:09

@Bunnyfuller

I don’t support what is going on, I want to put that out there.

But, my faith in British media being factual was shifted considerably following Brexit and the campaign leading up to it. I also am related to people in Eastern Europe. And what jumps out is that NO news is the unvarnished truth.

The live action now is indisputable but who gave who money/weapons/info in the past. Who propped up what regimes, who ‘owned’ the land - that stuff is shrouded in misinformation from ALL sides. It doesn’t make this ok, but please, stop citing Russian propaganda when someone tries to point out a different perspective on perceived wrongs. No, this invasion is never, ever justified, but let’s not become who we’re reviling and get insulting at different ideas being put forward.

Many people (no, I don’t have a link, a report or a %, just my experience in those countries and with some of the people) do have a view (weird though it may be to western ears) that things were better in the soviet years, they speak about Gorbachev like some speak of Blair, and they see the west as being the authors of the unstable world. That’s their lived truth, it isn’t ours, but it’s a bit arrogant just dismissing how they feel.

And whilst we of course unreservedly denounce this attack, if we don’t start to try to understand the mindset, if not agree, then there will be no peaceful solution. It doesn’t matter who starts it,what matters is who, and how it is ended.

It really isn't. There are some very good sources. The Financial Times was excellent on Brexit and are excellent on this as well.

BBC

Ukrainian presidential adviser Mykhaylo Podolyak has just tweeted that he and other officials have started talks with Russian representatives.

He outlines key issues on the agenda:

Immediate ceasefire
Armistice
Humanitarian corridors for the evacuation of civilians from destroyed or constantly shelled villages and cities

Yes it is accurate.

Problem with the Financial Times is their paywall

dreamingbohemian · 03/03/2022 15:13

You are saying that you think that some separatists are ethnically Ukranian? Do you have a credible source for that? Because I haven't seen that.

My credible source is the entire Internet. Go have a google, it will take 2 seconds.

Sorry to be rude but you come on here admitting you hardly know anything about this and then challenging people when they try to explain things!

For anyone who legitimately wants to learn more about the relationship between ethnicity and separatism in the Donbas, this is a very good (academic) article:

It's easy to check the history of a poster - just go to Advanced Search at the top of the page and in the "and were posted by (username):" box put the username you want to search for. You can set a date parameter if you want to but I've looked at a few posters on these threads and it's shocking (not) the number that have no posting history beyond a week or two ago and are only posting on "topical" threads rather than the usual mixture you'd see with a "normal" user.

Yes I just did this for particularly clueless poster. This is the only thread they've ever commented on.

Out of curiosity, could this be due to name changes? I change my name a lot on here but have been posting since around 2017/18! Wondering whether that would show or just show posts from current username?Confused

I managed to find that Guardian video. It was made in Dec 2021 and is about Ukraine defending its borders from Russia. It talks about the constant fight to defend its border since 2014.

Russian lawmakers have introduced legislation that would conscript into the military anyone arrested for protesting against Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. These people would be forced to fight in the invasion itself. What the fuck is happening to Russia. This is absolute madness.

True. Radio 4 has some good stuff as well about Ukraine.

Russia is a dictatorship. This is why so many Ukrainian people do not want to live under Russia, they know what they would be returning to. They are willing to fight for democracy.

A note of caution here: The draft legislation about conscripting anti-war protesters was introduced by minority party deputies. Informed people say this is a scare tactic by the authorities that’s unlikely to pass. I, for one, would be scared.

WeAreTheHeroes · 03/03/2022 15:26

Which is when Russian invaded Crimea.

Its like Yes Minster was actually a documentary. - this is true in spades in British politics.

dreamscantcometrue · 03/03/2022 15:26

Will the people of Ukraine largely be going about their daily business? Working, food shop, visiting relatives, school etc?

Iknowitisheresomewhere · 03/03/2022 15:27

Mumsnet has a lot of long running threads or series of threads on a huge variety of topics. See for example the data threads in COVID, the Brexit/Westminsterenders threads, the MLM threads (not so much now, but the earlier ones) some threads in FWR. The longer you stick around on all of them, the easier it is to see which posters post informative posts, with reputable links, and detail, and which don’t.

On all of the threads there is generally room for differences of opinion, and acknowledgement that posters, and the various sources they use, have different viewpoints.

I find them hugely informative in general and I think the useful information always outweighs anything else.

alltheapples · 03/03/2022 15:28

@Iknowitisheresomewhere I usually agree with this. But most topics do not have paid bots invading.
