Anyone else cutting out the hairdressers? Our local one has really upped the prices, can't justify it😩

I've decided to do my own hair & the dc's going forward. Decision made...our local hairdresser has had to up her prices to cover her overheads but if I keep getting my hair done I won't be able to cover my own household costs so the salon trips have to go... Weren't too regular, 3 to 4 times a year but 60 quid a trip for a cut & colour.. Anyone else cutting out the salon? Petrified about how prices will escalate especially now with the war in Ukraine..

I’m having one last colour and cut then deciding. Mined around £100 though.

Comedycook · 02/03/2022 17:25

60 quid a trip for a cut & colour

That would be an absolute bargain near me although I totally understand if you can't afford it, you can't afford it. I'm in suburban London...a cut and colour is about £150 even in a non trendy salon. I don't go anymore....it's just too much to justify.

DetailMouse · 02/03/2022 17:28

I've often wondered how so many "ordinary" people can afford all the salon visits, hair, nails, eyebrows lashes etc. I wonder if this crisis will see a move to a more natural look?

I fear this will be happening near me Aswell moving forward.

I live in one of the most expensive areas for water council tax and fuel so salon overheads are going up too Sad

I'm about to start training in a different area of my work to spread my wings and hopefully entice people that way.

Feelingthepinch22 · 02/03/2022 17:31

I used to think it was great value, she's pushed it up to 70 which is still relatively OK but I just can't justify it.. A friend is a trained hairdresser, not practicing though she changed career during lockdown, she's offered to cut mine in exchange for a couple of glasses vino & I'll throw a box colour on myself... Will save a fortune. I'd prefer to be able to spend the money on the kids activities or a trip to the theatre.. It's all relative now isn't it! Are all salons upping the prices?

Already have a natural look! Have discovered that hair dye for half the time and then highlight a few strands with sun in or whatever the modern one is works pretty ok. Not sure about the cut though ..

SoberSerena · 02/03/2022 17:31

I'm not cutting it out entirely, but I'm massively cutting back. Only going for a trim every six months and I'm going to the cheap, no frills salon Sad

Can't justify what my usual place is charging now. They charged me nearly £50 for a kids' haircut a few months ago Shock

Feelingthepinch22 · 02/03/2022 17:42

I jusy can't justify it anymore... 3 years ago, I would have thought nothing of getting my balyage, a bottle of salon shampoo & conditioner at the till, generous tip🙈 after lockdown I thought I was bring thrifty cutting out the balyage & going for an all over colour for less maintenance & cutting out the shampoo & conditioner I used buy from the hairdressers for pantene... Now I'm cutting out the hairdressers & the pantene for lidl's colour shampoo & so far so good no difference!

I stopped going after lockdown. I have fine hair that doesn't really grow much so I can trim the ends myself and colour it at home.

Smeds · 02/03/2022 17:43

A haircut is an annual event for me but my friend is a beautician (lashes, brows etc) and she has never been busier!

Egghead68 · 02/03/2022 17:43

Haven’t been since 2019

AlwaysOutside · 02/03/2022 17:45

Haven't been for nearly 4 years, just can't justify the expense. My DS's still go though as neither have hair that I could deal with myself

SpicePumpkin · 02/03/2022 17:45

I've never paid less than £60 for a cut and colour! Mine is £100. It was the cheapest 'decent' hairdresser in my area I could find. She works from home so has low overheads. I save up and only go once every 4/5 months though.

Dembones292 · 02/03/2022 17:47

I haven't been back to the hairdresser since lockdown. I bought a decent pair of scissors and I let it grow down to my shoulders (from a chin length bob). I chop it back to chin length about twice a year, DH does the back. Super easy. DH and DS use the barber every 8 weeks so we're still supporting local business but I don't think I'll be going back to paying £25 for a quick dry trim for a long time.

Paranoidandroidmarvin · 02/03/2022 17:47

@SoberSerena for a child’s haircut!!!! My son who is 18 Costs about £20.

I just tend to get my husband to trim the ends as my hair is all one length and generally wear it up anyway. I’m growing old gracefully with the grey hair.

Ilikewinter · 02/03/2022 17:48

I stopped going after lockdown but only went every few months anyway. I've got an easy to look after short bob, I used you tube to see how to cut it 'professionally' but now I just lob off an inch and tidy up the ends. Wish I 'd done it years ago!

Dembones292 · 02/03/2022 17:48

Yeh just to add all my friends regularly have nails, waxing, cut and colours, lash tints and lifts. I don't know how they can afford it.

Gretw · 02/03/2022 17:51

I haven't for a couple of years, I rope dh into helping me cut it. I never enjoyed the salon experience, I have curly hair and never found the cut that great anyway so it always felt a waste of money.

I know! Isn't that ludicrous? It was £20 before which I could live with as dd liked it. She's only 7 and it doesn't need cut all that often. I just paid it without thinking and then looked at the receipt later and was Shock

HouseofHolbein · 02/03/2022 17:56

I went for a buzz cut first lockdown 😊 husband runs the clippers over my head when the curl starts to show again 😂😂 he does his own as well so bargain!

Cassimin · 02/03/2022 17:56

I do the mumsnet pony tail cut and get 2 root dyes out of one box of dye.
My friend is a hairdresser and did mine so it wasn’t expensive. I just hate all the faff so I’d rather do it myself. Looks just as good.
£6 every 2 months.

saltcookie · 02/03/2022 18:03

I haven't been to a hairdresser for over five years. The last haircut I did was DIY and it was in March 2020. I always tie my hair up and wear it in an updo so it makes no difference. I've never dyed my hair except as a teenager, and it's always been DIY. I don't enjoy going to the hairdresser so it's something I'm glad not to do. I find the prices pretty crazy and it explains to me why I'm able to save most of my income despite not being on a big salary - I've never been interested in manicures, facials etc either.

Shellingbynight · 02/03/2022 18:09

I've coloured my own hair for years but I still go to the hairdresser for a cut. I have short hair which is hard to cut into a good style myself, obviously I had to DIY during lockdowns which was okayish, but each trim got progressively worse once I had no original cut to follow. So I decided it's worth paying the hairdresser. If the time comes when I can't afford it, I'll go half as often and attempt an interim cut myself. I don't have any other salon treatments.

Puddington · 02/03/2022 18:12

I've never enjoyed the salon experience either tbh, the hairdresser I used to go to for some years before I moved was a lovely and very talented man who always gave me the exact cut or colour I wanted but I'm so ridiculously introverted that even his friendly chat stressed me out! After I moved from that city I bought a box dye for the first time rather than look for a new hairdresser and I've honestly never looked back! It's about £6 every month and a half for me which is insanely cheap. Dyeing my hair myself in the peace of the bathroom with some music playing is much more relaxing lol and after years of doing it I'm a dab hand now. Same with trimming my own hair.

I know most hair/nail/beauty places where I live still are quite busy even with increased prices but like PP I've never been interested in having my nails done (mine do get quite long but I'm content to just paint/care for them myself) or having beauty treatments at salons, I'll treat myself to a pot of face mask or moisturiser from Lush instead which, while not exactly cheap, lasts for many more uses than a trip to a salon!

My partner still goes to the barber every few months because the guy does a great job that neither of us could even attempt to do lol but I think it's less than £20 for that so nowhere near as bad as mine would be.

Comedycook · 02/03/2022 18:12

Even a cut now is about £50. It really is a lot
