Anyone else cutting out the hairdressers? Our local one has really upped the prices, can't justify it😩

I've decided to do my own hair & the dc's going forward. Decision made...our local hairdresser has had to up her prices to cover her overheads but if I keep getting my hair done I won't be able to cover my own household costs so the salon trips have to go... Weren't too regular, 3 to 4 times a year but 60 quid a trip for a cut & colour.. Anyone else cutting out the salon? Petrified about how prices will escalate especially now with the war in Ukraine..

I left my hair dressers when they put it up to £42 & I always added a fiver tip.
It was just a wash, cut and blow-dry!
I get mines done every 3 months.

I have a friend who used to be a hair dresser that does mines now. £25. £30 with a tip!

My DH was spending about £50 a month at the barbers in London. When the pandemic hit, he went all buzz cuts and does it himself. He's saved well over a grand

jamandmarmaladeoncrumpets · 03/03/2022 00:24

Paid £32 last week for a 60 min cut appointment in town. Mobile hairdresser is the same price. First cut in 6months. Just can't afford it anymore.

I really don't think she cut it that well. started curl drying it before she finished the cut.

It was the cheapest i could find within 20 miles of me in south east. Typical cut and blowdry was £60/hr. £70 in some places.

Did family's tonight for them myself.

It's just such an unnecessary luxury now with the huge cost of living crisis.. Apparently it hasn't even started properly yet😭 3 years ago the salon was a necessity for me, now it's at the bottom of a list of priorities..

I've always coloured my own hair, but I go to the hairdresser's for a cut and blow-dry which costs £20.
Eyebrows etc I've never bothered with.

@Feelingthepinch22 Line your sink with cling film if you're worried about staining.

Feelingthepinch22 · 03/03/2022 07:17

Thanks Norgie, I'll try that!
We have a boots locally what's the best box dye? Castings?

I became allergic to hair dye about 8 years ago but used to pay £50 for a cut and colour every month. I changed to a trim that was £20. In lockdown DH trimmed my hair and has just carried on. I bought clippers and cut both their hair. DS has chosen to go back to a barbers and his cut is £10, DH is happy for me to carry on clipping.

I have a bleached pixie, I’m naturally very dark so trying to do it myself isn’t really an option as I need hairdresser to get the right ‘lift’. I can cut it if I needed to though.

I’m still having nails and waxing done, just less frequently. TBH, I’d feel pretty miserable otherwise, like I was just going to work and getting no fun payoff if I stopped these things. No DC though and no mortgage. Petrol prices are what scare me as I really don’t have a choice but to drive.

SpikeySmooth · 03/03/2022 10:27

I'll add here that since DH's barber passed away 15 years ago (a lovely Cypriot gentleman) I've been doing his hair, number 1 all over. We've got through three sets of clippers in 15 years. Barbers around here charge about £25 so I think we are very much quids in. The last set of clippers cost about £50 three years ago. They get used every 2-3 weeks. We must have saved thousands.

BoodleBug51 · 03/03/2022 10:34

I paid £60 for a cut yesterday.

It's normally £130/£140 for colour, cut and Olaplex.

fruitbat987 · 03/03/2022 10:37

to save money I go to the local student salon for a trim (have a very easy hair do and only bedf ends trimming and tidying) which costs a tenner. I then spend about £60 in colour at the good salon in town. I cant get it the same at home. Saves me £60 as I used to spend about £130 for cut and colour!

deadlanguage · 03/03/2022 11:02

I haven’t been since before the pandemic but I went irregularly anyway. It seems impossible to find someone willing to do a dry cut nowadays and I have sensitive skin which reacts to most salon type shampoos.

I cut mine at the front to the length I want it, then DP does the back to that length. I do his with the clippers. He actually went to the barbers a few months ago and they totally ignored what he wanted and did something they thought would look better instead so he’s not keen to go back!

Wishensook · 03/03/2022 16:44

Never spent over £60, I'd cry!! I do DHs hair with grades quite well if I do say so myself, just wish he could do mine!

I hate going to a salon tbh but I also hate my natural colour, I think if they marketed it, it would be labelled 'shitty pond'. I like getting it disguised with blonde foils but I'mstruggling to justify the increasing £££

Quite like the idea of trainee hairdresser or college, how's it best to find one? Or any ideas on what box dye should I try to cover up 'shitty pond'?

CornishGem1975 · 03/03/2022 16:47

I've spent a lot in the past couple of years - changing hair colour in preparation for getting married - but I've decided to stop now and will maintain at home the best I can. It costs me £100-£130 every 6 weeks for colour alone. I simply can't justify that now. I'll still have a trim but I am going to use a mobile hairdresser who is a lot more reasonable!

Search ‘trainee hairdresser’ or ‘student salon’ in your local area. Obviously finding one depends on where you live but if It’s a major town likely to have at least one

Can anybody recommend good cutting scissors? I have no idea what to buy.

Egghead68 · 11/03/2022 18:30

I got some from Amazon which are fine

I had my hair cut this morning at our local college salon, washed cut and blown by a trainee student, cost me only £11. Just a simple bob, easy to look after.

Before that,, I spent £45 on wash cut and blow at my old salon, £100 if you had colour on top of that.
You need to check your local college website for details.

I bought these and they are fine www.ebay.co.uk/itm/124149358768 Used them to tidy up DP's hair this morning after he made a bit of a hash with the clippers on himself!
Invasionofthegutsnatchers · 11/03/2022 19:35

I grew put my highlights over lockdown and it's great not bothering about roots. I have some grey hairs but I'm not fussed. I have a £22 cut every 6 weeks and save £50 a time not having colour. My hair is in amazing condition now.

Feelingthepinch22 · 11/03/2022 20:47

Cut the dc's hair this evening for the first time, all fine 😁 borrowed a neighbours cutting scissors! The dd's always had salon cuts, patting myself on the back for my diy job & saving a few quid 😁

Sorry, x posted with pp who mentioned college salons.

Hanooooooo · 11/03/2022 21:15

Another one recommending the nearest training salon! I was getting highlights and cut for £160 a pop but can get that at the college for £35! Definitely look into it.

itssunnytoday · 16/03/2022 14:07

I'm blonde but not naturally and I really need to do something about not spending so much at the salon. I'm in London, my last visit to the salon was a month ago and I got 50% off my full head highlights, plus cut, blow dry, toner and olaplex and it still cost me £200! Usually it's about £300!! It's ridiculous, Iv been getting lowlights put in to gradually go darker so that my roots don't look bad and I can go longer between colours but it feels ridiculous to pay this when I have a perfectly nice natural hair colour lol. Also bare in mind I don't have kids, if I did I definitely wouldn't be able to justify the cost. Just had an email saying they're upping their prices from April too... how do I get out of this cycle 😨

Feelingthepinch22 · 16/03/2022 14:13

I'd grow them out & keep trimming to get back to your normal colour.. The summers coming & that will help lighten your hair anyways... Natural & low maintenance is the way forward with the cost of living crisis...
