Anyone else cutting out the hairdressers? Our local one has really upped the prices, can't justify it😩

I've decided to do my own hair & the dc's going forward. Decision made...our local hairdresser has had to up her prices to cover her overheads but if I keep getting my hair done I won't be able to cover my own household costs so the salon trips have to go... Weren't too regular, 3 to 4 times a year but 60 quid a trip for a cut & colour.. Anyone else cutting out the salon? Petrified about how prices will escalate especially now with the war in Ukraine..

I now pay £7.99 for a dry cut instead of £35. Walk in unisex barbers. I can honestly say he cuts my hair exceptionally well.

@itssunnytoday

I'm blonde but not naturally and I really need to do something about not spending so much at the salon. I'm in London, my last visit to the salon was a month ago and I got 50% off my full head highlights, plus cut, blow dry, toner and olaplex and it still cost me £200! Usually it's about £300!! It's ridiculous, Iv been getting lowlights put in to gradually go darker so that my roots don't look bad and I can go longer between colours but it feels ridiculous to pay this when I have a perfectly nice natural hair colour lol. Also bare in mind I don't have kids, if I did I definitely wouldn't be able to justify the cost. Just had an email saying they're upping their prices from April too... how do I get out of this cycle 😨
Try getting a root stretch? Means I only have to go every 4 months or more

I've not been to a hairdressers in almost 9 years. I've not had my hair cut in probably 5. I did have it dreaded last summer, and might do that again this summer. But other than that I've not missed it.

I’ve started to eek mine from 6 weeks to every 9/10 weeks and I’m starting to have a darker blonde done so it’s not as noticeable….

I will have to stop soon she’s £89 been going to her for a long long time and it’s not gone up at all and I can’t afford it 😒

fussychica · 16/03/2022 18:57

No. I've found a good hairdresser and I won't be giving her up. She works from home and has a salon style set up which is really nice. I spend £75 about 4 or 5 times a year. If I went to a High St salon it would be around £120 around here. It's basically the only money I spend on my appearance as I don't wear much make up, my face creams are Aldi and I don't have any beauty treatments. I have cut DHs hair, which he is happy with, for years so no outlay there.

harriethoyle · 16/03/2022 18:58

I stopped getting my hair coloured in lock down. My husband puts box dye on and I save 74 quid every eight weeks. Not brave enough to trust him with my hair cut though!

dannydyerismydad · 16/03/2022 19:05

My salon (SE) is now £75 for a cut and blow dry.

As a result my hair is now waist length.

Blueberrycreampie · 16/03/2022 19:05

As well as the price increase, two hair salons near me are asking for a deposit up front. When I said I was reluctant to give my card details over the phone, I was told it was necessary as some clients don't turn up. I assured her I would telephone to cancel if I was unable to attend but she was adamant so I went elsewhere.

MrsDThomas · 16/03/2022 19:08

No. I go every 6-8 months for a wet cut. I have lots of natural curls and most hairdressers have no idea about drying mine. So i leave with wet hair and dry it at home the way I have done for many years,

So £24 is not breaking the bank.

Ill continue to have my nails done too, at home for £14 every 3-4 weeks

That's a bargain. I had cut and colour- bob length and was 120
Papertyger · 16/03/2022 19:19

I've only been a handful of times in the last ten year's.
I cut my hair myself and dye it.

goodnightgrumble · 16/03/2022 19:21

How the hell do you cut your own hair?

Ducksareruiningmypatio · 16/03/2022 19:24

I've always box coloured, I stopped going to the salon when I realised I was generally unhappy with the results and I could do it better myself (maybe 5 years ago?)
I do my own nails with a gel lamp and all of my hair removal with an epilator.
No way I'll go back

Feelingthepinch22 · 17/03/2022 10:45

I'm not too fussed re my nails, I just paint & go, usually rimmel or no 7 if it's on offer... I used to go to the hairdressers every 6 weeks at least... So far this year I've saved 180 quid & can't tell the difference...

I go to a hair by Mavis place, plenty of older people go. I go every three weeks of my roots, £26

beautifullymad · 17/03/2022 14:08

I colour my own. I discuss it at length with my hairdresser who agrees I'm doing a good job. He always tells me if I've messed up!

I use only semipermanent tint. Apply to shallow roots only for 30 mins then massage into remaining hair.

I'm very grey and it covers but needs repeating every 14 days. That's why I only do the shallowest application to the roots.

It looks surprisingly natural.

I had a bad run in with permanent dye. My hairdresser said the layering of permanent dye is what makes it dark and unnatural. Semi permanent washes out quickly so the risks are reduced. I only mix up 1/6th of a bottle so a single box application lasts me 12 weeks. It's very economical, especially with reduced multi buys.

Feelingthepinch22 · 18/03/2022 07:39

That sounds great & very economical..

I don't really do much to my hair, I just have a trim every three months or so and take my daughters to have theirs cut at the same time. It comes to around £40. I won't be cutting it out.

Feelingthepinch22 · 18/03/2022 11:24

Is that 40 including your daughters?

OP posts:
CounsellorTroi · 18/03/2022 11:40

I’m not giving up my hair stylist. £140 for cut and colour every 5-6 weeks. I afford it by not having any other beauty treatments and not spending much on clothes, shoes, makeup etc.

I don’t think salons will ever go back to the way they were with magazines and hot drinks etc. Cuts down on the overheads. I don’t miss the mags, can always take something to read, but I do miss the coffee!

Feelingthepinch22 · 18/03/2022 11:44

140 is so much but as you said you go without other stuff
