Anyone else cutting out the hairdressers? Our local one has really upped the prices, can't justify it😩

I've decided to do my own hair & the dc's going forward. Decision made...our local hairdresser has had to up her prices to cover her overheads but if I keep getting my hair done I won't be able to cover my own household costs so the salon trips have to go... Weren't too regular, 3 to 4 times a year but 60 quid a trip for a cut & colour.. Anyone else cutting out the salon? Petrified about how prices will escalate especially now with the war in Ukraine..

Yeah I'm done as well. Would have had regular cuts, colour and nails etc but after first lockdown I've never went back and do anything I need myself. I never enjoyed the whole salon experience so I'm glad to be done with it tbh

onlychildhamster · 02/03/2022 18:16

I am getting my hair dyed when I fly to my home country next month. It is much cheaper, costs £40 instead of £110 in London! I generally fly back once a year so maybe I could justify it if I do it in my home country once and then in London another time. Seriously considering just leaving my hair alone other than regular cuts; I would rather continue buying suqqu foundation, Chanel highlighter, Charlotte Tilbury bronze and glow and westman atelier contour rather than spend it on hair.my hair is pretty crap anyway, maybe it works to enhance my best features (skin, eyes and lips) rather than try to remedy a lost cause. My clothes are mainly sale items or second hand so it's easier to economize in that area plus I live in dresses+ aging sweaters so that outfit combination is pretty simple.

For those that colour their own hair how do you stop the sink from discolouring? Back in the day when I coloured my own hair I used destroy the bathroom😩 any tips?
Yes it's an unnecessary luxury.. A cut & colour the same price as a term of swimming for one of the dc... As I said to DH earlier, the swimming classes are absolutely necessary, a trip to the salon won't save their lives!

I haven’t been since Covid hit. I had to stay home because of our household medical situation so I learned to give myself a simple cut. I keep thinking I will go and get it done, but I kind of can’t be bothered.

EatSleepReplete · 02/03/2022 18:19

I had mine in a pixie for years but I've grown it out & am going back to longer hair, it's easier to hide a poor home cut if you can tie it up. Have decided to start colouring it myself too. Hopefully I will eventually go a nice silvery grey like several of my older relatives & I'll go natural, but at the moment it's a mousey brown with a lot of dark grey in, very ageing & I don't like it at all.

Chakraleaf · 02/03/2022 18:21

I've started leaving mine now. Not coloured since 2020.

PissedOffNeighbour22 · 02/03/2022 18:23

I think you just have to get the colour off the sink asap. I never had an issue at my old house as it just wiped straight off but the bathroom where I've moved to stained really badly the first time I dyed (black).
It does wear off though if there are any odd splashes that you can't remove immediately.

I've never had my hair dyed by a hairdresser. No way I could justify it. I feel like I've been ripped off if I pay more than £20 for a cut & blow dry.

ZenNudist · 02/03/2022 18:23

Do you live in the far north. I'm Manchester and 70 cut colour is good value. I only pay that because I have a lovely mobile hairdresser. It used to be £100 in a salon about 6 years ago.

fortheloveofcheesecake · 02/03/2022 18:24

I used to pay £90 every 10-12 weeks for half highlights and a cut. Now found an 'older clientele' hairdresser which do a dry cut for £8 and use a £6 box dye instead. Just couldn't justify the cost when I live rurally, work from home and spend my weekends in jeans and wellies so no one really sees me to appreciate it! Grin

I colour my own hair now. I have an old t-shirt I wear when the dye is on and I jump in the shower when time for rinsing the dye off. CBA leaning over the sink or bath these days Smile

I’ve discovered hair dressing schools & model sessions (you don’t need to look like a model, I definitely don’t!)
A few weeks ago my Dd got her hair cut for free (in a style she wanted) in a central London salon - the instructor cut it while the students watched. It takes longer than a normal cut but the woman who cut her hair usually charges £150+
I’ve had mine done for a tenner at the local training place - the teacher watches them very closely & it’s probably the best cut I’ve had (it did take ages but I knew to expect that)

nancy75 · 02/03/2022 18:27

Beauty schools also offer massive discounts on nails, waxing & other things you might get done

Arghhconfused · 02/03/2022 18:27

Im feeling much better about doing our own hairs after reading this thread!

userxx · 02/03/2022 18:29

Not dropping my hair appointments as it's crazy cheap but the regular facials will need to go. Just can't justify the increasing prices and penny pinching elsewhere.

Beautiful3 · 02/03/2022 18:32

I haven't been to the salon since before lockdown. I can't afford the increased price either. I use a blonde tint every 8 weeks. Seems okay, never going to be as good as the salon, but hey ho.

Hen2018 · 02/03/2022 18:33

I’ve had mine cut at the local college for 10-+ years. £3.75!

I cut my children’s using clippers and scissors. (Short back and sides).

Viviennemary · 02/03/2022 18:36

I'm cutting down. Cut and colour now around £80. For a small local salon. Ridiculous.

MeanderingGently · 02/03/2022 18:38

I started cutting my own hair a few years ago, it's fairly short and sort of shaped round my head. I made mistakes but hair grows and the mistakes don't show after a while. It gets better with practice, I can now layer it on top and at the back. Not as good as a hairdresser would, obviously, but it's fine when I do it these days.

Just recently I decided to stop colouring it. I have used a slow wash-out colour close to my own colour for years but now I have decided I'm old enough to go grey, no more colour. My natural colour is probably "salt and pepper" at the moment....but it saves more money and it's less hassle. To be honest it feels quite liberating really!

Soontobe60 · 02/03/2022 18:39

@Feelingthepinch22

I used to think it was great value, she's pushed it up to 70 which is still relatively OK but I just can't justify it.. A friend is a trained hairdresser, not practicing though she changed career during lockdown, she's offered to cut mine in exchange for a couple of glasses vino & I'll throw a box colour on myself... Will save a fortune. I'd prefer to be able to spend the money on the kids activities or a trip to the theatre.. It's all relative now isn't it! Are all salons upping the prices?
Have a look at your local college - many who have beauty courses have salons that the students use to practice.
TabithaTittlemouse · 02/03/2022 18:40

I really love my hairdresser so I am sad.

dipdye · 02/03/2022 18:41

Very cheap near us, plus I only gave one haircut per year

The kid's cost around £10 per time

duvetdayforeveryone · 02/03/2022 18:44

My DH cuts and colours my hair. He is not a hairdresser Grin

anonanonanon123 · 02/03/2022 18:45

Yep I can't afford anything any more 😢 hair dresser, nails, eyebrow waxes will all have to go and I am feeling really insecure about ageing at the moment and just feel ugly!

Christmas1988 · 02/03/2022 18:53

I’ve cut out the hair dressers since the first lockdown, I look like a seven year old girl with ludicrously long hair but I wear it in a mum bun anyway so who cares!

Feelingthepinch22 · 02/03/2022 18:54

I'd love to keep checking back to this thread to see how we're all getting on. A few of the mums at the school are the same & one salon in the area has really pushed the "add ons" deep conditioning treatment for an extra tenner, pushing products etc & my friends say it's very off putting & their opting out completely! Mine wasn't like that it's just the money is simply needed elsewhere...
