Anyone else cutting out the hairdressers? Our local one has really upped the prices, can't justify it😩

I've decided to do my own hair & the dc's going forward. Decision made...our local hairdresser has had to up her prices to cover her overheads but if I keep getting my hair done I won't be able to cover my own household costs so the salon trips have to go... Weren't too regular, 3 to 4 times a year but 60 quid a trip for a cut & colour.. Anyone else cutting out the salon? Petrified about how prices will escalate especially now with the war in Ukraine..

@anonanonanon123

Yep I can't afford anything any more 😢 hair dresser, nails, eyebrow waxes will all have to go and I am feeling really insecure about ageing at the moment and just feel ugly!
Please don't, we're all in the same boat. It's a challenge & trial & error but think of the money saved. I'm finding Lidl's cien range fabulous, I used always use dermalogica pre lockdown but so much has changed since then.

I didn't go really regularly but got into the habit of foils a couple of times a year and a trim/re shape. I'm sticking to doing my roots at home now and asking my mum to trim it - can't justify a salon trip anymore!

My mum still goes twice a month however, switching between cut and colour. But she has a lot more money than I do!

EveningOverRooftops · 02/03/2022 19:12

I haven’t used the hair dressers for years. Have learned though online resources how best to trim my hair.

I do DCs too.

Invest in scissors just for hair cutting and a decent pair of clippers and some combs and hair clips to hold hair out of the way. I do buy a pricier leave in hair conditioner (cantu one) but get a couple of pots when it’s on offer or save my boots points for it.

Go slow. You’ll be fine.

I grew the colour out during lockdowns, so saving the colouring costs.
I'm now going once every 6 weeks for a trim and so far, the prices haven't increased- but I am going tomorrow so I'll see.

HerRoyalNotness · 02/03/2022 19:16

I haven’t had a cut in 2yrs, just let it grow. It looks shaggy, but I don’t go anywhere much anyway. I thought I’d treat myself to a colour last year $200 later, WTF! They even ignored my instruction not to use warm tones. I’d normally do a box colour but wrecked my shoulder so it’s not easy or pain free to do it myself anymore.

Saladd0dger · 02/03/2022 19:24

I never get mine cut. I throw it up in a clip. Luckily I trained in hairdressing years ago so I do the kids. Dh pays £18 every 2 weeks 😱 he’s quite fussy with his trims. Iv told him it has to stop now and I’ll be doing it

PunishmentRoundupWithJoon · 02/03/2022 19:30

I cut my own hair for the first time during lockdown and it's ridiculously easy. I swear I'll never go to a hairdresser again (I hated it anyway) . Look up the Unicorn Method, it shows how to cut your hair and you can even do layers. Well, for longer hair anyway, not sure about short hair but bet there's an easy way to do that too!

MyNameIsAngelicaSchuyler · 02/03/2022 19:31

I can’t bear to cut back on this. Currently cut / colour every three months. I might drop colouring to twice a year but it’s an absolute state without a professional cut and I LOVE my hairdresser.

Fastforwardtospring · 02/03/2022 19:35

I love my hairdresser, he’s based at home, I will extend the length of time between visits by a couple of weeks but I won’t be stopping, he has a living to make to, I’d rather cut back on something else.

TabithaTiger · 02/03/2022 19:36

Hair is the one thing I won't cut back on. I get mine coloured every 5 weeks and I pay £45 (I get it cut every third visit and I pay £55). I've been going to my hairdresser for years and I'm aware this is a very good price. I don't have nails or anything else done though.

greenbirdsong · 02/03/2022 19:39

I also haven't been since the first lockdown back in March 2020.
It made me realise how much I really don't enjoy the hairdressers! I hate making small talk when actually I just want to sit there in peace. I also found it was getting more and more expensive and I still wasn't happy with the colour etc. About £90 for a cut and colour where I live.

What are peoples best home box dyes? I have medium brown hair but some white hairs around my hairline and temples. I find the box dyes I've tried don't cover the white hair very well, it's like it washes off after about a week - even permanent dyes! I've tried nice and easy and loreal excellence which say 100% coverage but the white hairs are stubborn to cover!

Imabouttoexplode · 02/03/2022 19:40

@Comedycook

Even a cut now is about £50. It really is a lot
I pay a fortune for colour but my cut is £10 with a local mobile hairdresser.
OnlyFoolsnMothers · 02/03/2022 19:40

I have highlights- last salon trip post lock down went from £150 to £280- I found a local hairdresser who works from home and costs £85.
I appreciate overheads and energy prices but it’s just way too expensive to go to a salon.
To be honest the way costs of living are going I may just home dye it back to brown and do it myself

EvilPea · 02/03/2022 19:43

I stopped going about 8 years ago when it got to £100 for a cut and highlights. I did try a college and that was great, cost under a tenner for a cut. But I’ve been cutting my hair myself since then, I’m not good, but the cuts are no worse than my £100’s. I do miss the colour though, I don’t miss the constant re growth watch though!

amylou8 · 02/03/2022 19:44

I gave mine a 'little trim' in lockdown and haven't been to the hairdresser since! Box dye to cover the greys and job done.

LadyCordeliaFitzgerald · 02/03/2022 19:44

I’ve cut the dc’ hair since lockdown. Getting ds to a barber was never easy so this suits us all.

Mine is shockingly expensive. I’m considering dyeing mine grey with lowlights which should last much longer between colours.

Smartiepants79 · 02/03/2022 19:45

£60 for a cut and colour is about half what I would be paying.
A cut on its own is £40.
Mines not the cheapest locally but it fairly average.
There’s not way I’d be cutting my own hair. I’d look bloody ridiculous!

Nsky · 02/03/2022 19:51

Get a dry cut £23, friend colours it

NotJustACigar · 02/03/2022 19:53

I've always disliked going to the hairdressers and I'm really glad not to have to go anymore. I cut my own hair using the Brad Mondo method and I colours using box dye. I use quite a light colour box dye and the result is that my grey hair ends up looking like very subtle highlights. I invest in Philio Kingsley elasticizer which I use once a week. My hair actually looks much better now than it did when I paid the hairdresser. I also have a gel nails kit which works very well.

NotJustACigar · 02/03/2022 19:55

Not the best photo but gives you some idea.

Anyone else cutting out the hairdressers? Our local one has really upped the prices, can't justify it😩
dottydodah · 02/03/2022 19:56

Well I havent been since 2014! Never liked going to the hairdressers much . I have been trimming it so long, have it to an Art Form now. Also Colour it every 6/8 weeks .Takes about an hour! Usually can get my Colour boxes on offer .Have been complimented on it as well!Special sharp scissors (in a hiding place so no one else can use them) and tutorials on line!)

playmelikeasymphony · 02/03/2022 20:05

Have a look at mobile hairdressers. Mine used to work at the local fancy salon but went mobile and charges half of what the salon did (I didn’t go to her in the salon but know people who did).

HoollyWugger · 02/03/2022 20:06

Which box dyes are people using? Any recommendations for one that will cover greys?

Libraryghost · 02/03/2022 20:14

God I wish I could but I have loads of frizzy curly fine shit hair that looks crap at the best of times. I have debated shaving it off and wearing a wig but then a decent wig costs an arm and a leg. I wish the shaved head look would become fashionable.

SylviasMotherSaid · 02/03/2022 20:20

I buy professional colours online and I’ve never looked back .
