Anyone else cutting out the hairdressers? Our local one has really upped the prices, can't justify it😩

I've decided to do my own hair & the dc's going forward. Decision made...our local hairdresser has had to up her prices to cover her overheads but if I keep getting my hair done I won't be able to cover my own household costs so the salon trips have to go... Weren't too regular, 3 to 4 times a year but 60 quid a trip for a cut & colour.. Anyone else cutting out the salon? Petrified about how prices will escalate especially now with the war in Ukraine..

@Feelingthepinch22 I swear by John Frieda hair dye - it’s a foam rather than a liquid and therefore minimal mess!! Cheaper to buy on Amazon too Smile

SallyCinnamon3009 · 02/03/2022 20:51

I've had a mobile hairdresser for years £50 cut and colour. It's not the same "experience" as going to the hairdressers but I can justify the cost of it a lot more

Jjjayfee · 02/03/2022 20:54

Dembones can you recommend a decent pair of scissors for cutting hair?

I go 2-3 times a year (Restyle or trim depending on what I fancy) to a salon near me and it costs £60 just for the cut! 😱🤯 The cheapest place in my postcode charges £50 (Zone 3 London). I don't dye anymore. My hair is difficult, thick, both straight in some areas and wavy in others, and I never get exactly what I want. It seems like a rip-off each time.

EvilPea · 02/03/2022 21:09

Has anyone used this highlighter?
www.johnfrieda.com/en-uk/products/brilliant-brunette/visibly-brighter-lightening-treatment/

@Itsokay2020 I have never gone dyed my hair but some of those john Freida colours are tempting.

Longingforatikihut · 02/03/2022 21:21

I pay £9 for a dry cut 2-3 times a year. I've stopped colouring and am growing out to my natural grey and brown. But I already put that off sometimes because I just can't afford it. I've half accepted I'll probably lose my house etc by the end of 2023.

Itsokay2020 · 02/03/2022 21:22

@EvilPea I haven’t tried the product you have tagged (but am tempted!) but the box dyes (I use 5N or 6N) are perfect, no red tones and good, even coverage with minimal mess!

ParkheadParadise · 02/03/2022 21:31

I'm not
I go to the hairdressers once a week for a blow-dry and every 4 weeks for my colour.
I also get my make-up done if we are going out somewhere special.
Get my nails, lashes, brows every 3 weeks. I've also had botox, peels, facials every couple of months.
I would cut back on other things before I would on my hair and beauty appointments.

MissMaple82 · 02/03/2022 21:36

Wow, what will you do with all that extra cash per year !

TwoBigNoisyBoys · 02/03/2022 21:46

I haven’t been since Sept (last year) and because I’m currently undergoing chemo (with the cold cap treatment) I won’t be going for a while yet, either. But I’ve been considering this too. I adore my hairdresser, she’s absolutely lovely, but it was £110 last time I went. I can’t justify or afford that anymore, no matter how much I like the results. I’m considering going for dry cuts and box dyes. I haven’t coloured my own hair for YEARS and am a bit worried because I normally have a balayage and it’s very multi-toned (various shades of blonde), which I know I won’t be able to achieve at home. What box dyes do others use and recommend? I’m thinking of throwing caution to the winds and going red 😊

Pugdogmom · 02/03/2022 21:58

I use a mobile hairdresser and she's fab.Cut and Colour every 2/3 months and she's £50. Gave up getting my nails done though, do them myself but never my hair. If I was paying London prices I probably would though.

MrsBerthaRochester · 02/03/2022 22:00

I havent been to the hairdressers in about 10 years. I use a box dye every 8 weeks and trim it myself. I use the Bleach london repair mask once a week as my hair is very dry but a big tub costs £10.
I have a friend who is a dog walker. Rarely goes out, lives in jeans and hoodies but gets pays £60 to get hair done every six weeks and £40 getting her nails done every month. She really cant afford this but wont stop.
I used to be far more vain and wouls get nails/lashes done but since covid dont go out anymore so dont see point.

MrsTimRiggins · 02/03/2022 22:08

I’ve just booked to have my hair done actually, balayage, cut, style etc… £180. A bit eye watering but I haven’t actually been to the hairdresser since October 2020 so I guess cost per month isn’t so bad! Plus she does such an amazing job, it looks good for so long.
I did give up my lash extensions, acrylic nails and brow wax/tint 2 years ago. I used to go every 2.5-3 weeks but stopped when I went travelling and never started again. Big money there!

CarrieHughes · 02/03/2022 22:17

I've never had a professional one under £60! Exceot for a last-minute 'rush discount'.
When I had the time went to trainee hairdresses. Excellent value for the price, but I'm not picky and won't cry if they do the wrong shade or whatever. I've never come out looking horrible

Strangeways19 · 02/03/2022 22:20

I'm not a hairdresser but electricity is expensive now, or will be very soon. I work somewhere that relies on electricity most of the day & I'm considering hiking the prices because I just won't make any money if not

XenoBitch · 02/03/2022 22:23

I used to pay £12 for a spray down and trim. Did me fine. It shot up suddenly to £22. Fuck knows what it is now.

movingsoon13 · 02/03/2022 22:25

I stopped going around 2 years ago, after going a few times to a few different hairdressers and being repeatedly disappointed I stopped altogether. Stopped dying my hair, grew out the natural colour and started going to a family friend who was a former hairdresser who would trim it every few months or so.

schoolsoutforever · 02/03/2022 22:27

Haven’t been to the hairdresser in years for colour and I get a dry cut now about once every six months. Partly cost but mainly because I quite enjoy doing the colour myself - just to see how it comes out. It’s usually just as good as the hairdresser (I think!! - hairdressers will probably think otherwise!) but I don’t use box dyes - I buy colour and developer separately and mix them. I find this results in less brassy hair for me. I throw some highlights in too where I want them - then I can control it all (and it’s my fault if I screw it up!). I really like the £££ that I save on the colour too.

schoolsoutforever · 02/03/2022 22:30

I get a dry cut because I detest the sink leaning thing - always feel faint. But again it costs less too. It is only decent because I just want longish hair trimmed, no real style.

noblegreenk · 02/03/2022 22:35

I had to change salon. Was paying £45 for a cut and blowdry before lockdown. When I tried to book last year they wanted £62!!! After trying a few different salons, I've found a fab hairdresser who charges £42. I don't know how other average paid people justify the cost of nails, brows, lashes etc. Although I have a friend who mentioned she spends approx £140pm on hair, nails and brows, but then moans that she's struggling to pay for her kids shoes. I think some people's priorities are very much misplaced!

purplecorkheart · 02/03/2022 22:42

My stylist left the salon that he was working in and started working from home. His overheads are limited and quite honestly he undercharged so his price increase is not too bad.
I have stopped my blowdries in the salon near work on the odd lunchbreak as the prices went up 35% .

justasking111 · 02/03/2022 22:49

Just have a dry cut and colour yourself

Beekindbeehumble · 02/03/2022 22:55

Have managed to add an extra 2-3 weeks between cuts for the males in the house, so going less frequently.
I was going every 8-10 weeks, so going to only go every 12 weeks now.

KohlaParasaurus · 02/03/2022 23:40

I wear my hair short and unfussy and my DH trims it every 6-8 weeks. I last went to the hairdressers 11 years ago. I had no idea how much hairdos cost nowadays till I read this thread.

Orangesox · 02/03/2022 23:50

I did exactly this at the beginning of the first lockdown. I had been growing out a shocking highlight addiction, so I slapped on a box dye that matched my roots and I haven’t looked back. I trim the ends of my hair regularly to keep it looking neat… and have embraced the peppering of greys that are throughout. I’d estimate I’ve saved about £2.5k by doing this.

DH hasn’t gone to a hairdresser for himself in about 15 years. He likes it kept short and clipped, so he gets a grade two buzz cut, neck tidy abs gradient to the back of his neck every 4 weeks by yours truly.
