the headlines of the papers today have brought me to tears

fallfallfall · 01/03/2022 06:24

Sure @Alondra…good and evil, end days, rapture and religious drivel added in.
I assume your a bot cuz your post is delusional.

Hlglu56 · 01/03/2022 06:33

@Rocaille

Russia is the worlds largest country by a considerable margin and the idea they need more land mass to consolidate their security is frankly ridiculous.

They don't need more land mass. They'll probably install a pro-Russia regime and then scarper back home at the earliest opportunity. I can see them wanting to occupy Ukraine for any longer than necessary.

The objective of the campaign is not to acquire more land, it is to prevent NATO expansion into Ukraine. They've already achieved that, as there's absolutely no way NATO will sign Ukraine up after this disturbing episode.

Sadly I don’t believe that. Putin’s already said he doesn’t count Ukraine as a country, he believes it’s just a part of Russia. Maybe he will put a governor in but it will be a puppet regime.

Such a dreadful situation. I don’t think Ukrainians are going to give in easily after Putin’s words and I’m sure Putin won’t give in so I can see lots of blood shed and destroyed cities.

@MrsLargeEmbodied

there are reports that russia are losing the will
Russian soldiers might be, Russian civilians too...But Putin is surely mad, the tantrum to end all tantrums.

He isn't seeing reason.

fallfallfall · 01/03/2022 06:43

Joining NATO or not I suspect all countries that neighbor Putin’s Russia will increase their armory.

Gingerwarthog · 01/03/2022 06:46

Apologies if this has already been posted but the International criminal court's prosecutor has announced that he will launch an investigation into possible war crimes/ crimes against humanity in Ukraine.

Ohmnomnom · 01/03/2022 06:49

BBC news has published pictures of young cancer patients sheltering in hospital basements. Children who should be receiving the best possible care and treatment having to hide underground to escape Putin's bombs. I hope the world never forgets these images.

Elon Musk’s kit has arrived to keep the internet up and running in Ukraine

Gingerwarthog · 01/03/2022 06:52

Incidentally the war crimes investigation is looking at current events in Ukraine but the grounds for an investigation are also based on a preliminary investigation published last year on the Crimea and Donbas.

Gingerwarthog · 01/03/2022 06:52

The ICC story is from The Guardian online.

I don't see how that's true at all - this is about a country choosing its own path, and a big neighbouring country (or more specifically its leader) believing that country doesn't have that right and shouldn't even exist.

Dotty agree with you here

LunaTheCat · 01/03/2022 07:00

@timetochangeusername

The thing with applying to the Eu. Could it be to help the negotiations. Each side has to ask for more than their bottom line and then meet in the middle. Ukraine could be neutral, giving up NATO and EU plans (for a set period ), Russia gives up the war and can claim victory. But they need to show that they've won something and could the EU bid be part of allowing Putin to back away with (some) dignity ?
This is very sensible - they need very very skilled negotiations which will make Russia feel like they have not lost face. Of course I totally agree that Putin is a mad, nasty little - man but the future of all of depends on either 1. Reaching a negotiated deal or 2. Someone taking a bullet to Putin.
Damnloginpopup · 01/03/2022 07:02

The sanctions are hitting the ordinary Russian people hard. Could this be the key? Guardian link as the one I https as reading previously I can no longer find but same information basically.

Yeah, that isn't what happened though. I mean we're all still posting Grin

TokyoSushi · 01/03/2022 07:10

Is it a possibility that somebody would take out Putin? Not sure how they'd ever do it? But could it be an option?

blanketyblanked · 01/03/2022 07:12

The 40-mile long Russian military conga towards Kyev is looking potentially very bloody

anotherperson1 · 01/03/2022 07:12

It's so hard to comprehend- how much of their army is this?

anotherperson1 · 01/03/2022 07:13

It's crazy to think this one person is so untouchable.

BigHuff · 01/03/2022 07:15

It would be a very obvious assassination. While a lot of nations have shown support for Ukraine, I think assassination of a head of state is still too far, not least because of the implications for other heads of state. The obvious response would be justification for a Russian escalation.

I think the only way to "take him out" would be during conflict (ie war on Russian soil) - and I don't think anyone wants it to get to that stage.

TokyoSushi · 01/03/2022 07:17

Agree @anotherperson1 Apart from all the ramifications I suppose the main starting point is how would you even get to him? He seems holed up in the Kremlin and will be for ever more. I'm sure the conversation is being had.

I really hope President Zelinsky makes it through safely.

ParsleySageRosemary · 01/03/2022 07:17

@dreamingbohemian

I agree NATO is playing a very bold game here

Its members are sending lethal weapons, fighter jets, ammunition, and volunteers into the conflict zone, on top of all the sanctions and travel restrictions and everything else. Of course it's all legal (collective self-defence) but it's incredibly provocative.

Perhaps they feel emboldened by how hapless the Russian invasion has been so far. They may be thinking Russia can't do anything serious to them with conventional forces and wouldn't dare go nuclear. US/NATO intelligence was pretty accurate in the leadup to invasion, perhaps they are seeing things we're not.

And it might be the right call. Appeasing Putin all these years hasn't worked either.

I don’t think it’s NATO, it’s Europe. Europe is waking up to the fact that if we don’t defend ourselves, all we will be is a battlefield between superpowers. Too many forget that not everybody either wishes Europe well, or cares much. There are too many people in the world for that.
CaveMum · 01/03/2022 07:18

Interesting thread here about Russian misinformation being spread through fake profiles that use AI to create the people’s faces twitter.com/oneunderscore__/status/1498349668522201099?s=21

TokyoSushi · 01/03/2022 07:18

Anyway, that's enough musing for. Tuesday morning, I agree that it would unleash an unthinkable nightmare if it happened.

ParsleySageRosemary · 01/03/2022 07:19

I could even say a battlefield between superegos.
