Anyone remember Threads?

elfycat · 27/02/2022 19:11

@Xenia

I still have my copy of Protect and Survive which every home was given in about 1980 to help us in case of nuclear attack. I remember it was important to have some bottled water as radiation could get into the tap water and some kind of cupboard under the stairs might be useful too.

digitalarchive.wilsoncenter.org/document/110193.pdf?v=c77f06e782d33a2ec8bf00d7c597ea10

It includes help with arranging a fall out room in your house and inner refuge.

I seem to remember, maybe not from that guide, that in addition to fresh water it was good to have some red wine to hand, as it acts as a treatment to radiation. It came up again after Fukushima.

I might start prophylactic dosing. If the red wine is cleared off the shelves tomorrow it's just me panic buying it all up [Grin]

Apparently CCP/China are supporting Putin Hmm

youhadmeatjello · 27/02/2022 19:14

Where have you see that @AutomaticMoon last I read China abstained from all votes and were urging resolution to the conflict through dialogue

China abstained in the latest UN security council vote condemning Russia, which is generally considered to show they do not support his actions.

China won't support him getting familiar with the nuclear button.
ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 27/02/2022 19:19

He’s angry, he’s embarrassed, the propaganda machine is doing overtime trying to cover up Russias failures to gain ground. He’s stomping his feet and shouting to be heard. He’s having a sulk, but that sulk will not include using nuclear weapons. So stop worrying about it

He’s also clearly unhinged.

Suzi888 · 27/02/2022 19:20

Well no one on here is going to know are they Hmm

Dimondsareforever · 27/02/2022 19:23

He seems to be blaming this on nato. NATO are being to aggressive he says. I guess it’s a ploy to get his people on side for him to actually start using nuclear weapons against Ukraine.

I fear that he would rather die than lose. And if he is going to die anyway, then why not let rip and take the rest of the world with him …..

Prescottdanni123 · 27/02/2022 19:24

@Pandai

The people who fought in WW2 were not born with a gun in their hand screaming "Fuck the Nazis". They were ordinary people who never in their wildest dreams believed that they would fight in a world war. It is amazing what someone can do when their backs are against the wall so it is impossible to know what we would be capable of if we were invaded.

The derogaratory way you describe the British people's bravery is actually offensive to the people who already put their lives on the line on a daily basis. The soldiers, the firemen, police, paramedics, RNLI, Mountain Rescue etc. Not to mention the brave members of the public who've risked their lives on the spot to help strangers who have found themselves in danger.

Bunnycat101 · 27/02/2022 19:29

I don’t think it would get to the point of launching nukes but I do worry about his psychology. I don’t know how he comes down from the invasion without finding a way to ‘win’. I know a few people have mentioned family annihilators and it’s the sort of psychology that leads someone to do that that worries me about Putin. He’s always been ruthless but ruthless on the brink of losing power alongside other illnesses could be a very dangerous combination.

hilbil21 · 27/02/2022 19:31

@Indoctro After watching that I think it would be best to go first lol Shock

Yes. Terrifying.

This is my worry too. If there’s no way out for him, what is there to lose?

Well one needs a sense of humour at a time like this 🤭

This is also my fear. I don’t understand what rhe belarus president meant, he said in three days it will become a meat grinder and the worst will happen if Putin doesn’t win, does that mean he thinks Putin will nuke the Ukraine if he can’t take it?
ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 27/02/2022 19:41

I feel he’d rather die than lose tooSad

Forgothowmuchlhatehomeschoolin · 27/02/2022 19:41

@Bedsheets4knickers

I just wish someone would stick a bullet in his head . Surely the people closest round him do no want this either .
Can't believe noone has yet
CafeCremeMerci · 27/02/2022 19:41

@TeloMere

Can you imagine us Brits taking up arms to defend ourselves?

I've no clue how to use use a gun but would soon learn if there was no other way to save myself and my children from an invading army.

I don't know, I doubt many of us have what it takes to kill another human face to face, unless they're actually physically harming one of our children. I'm a good shot, but I'm far too soft to shoot a human unless they're active hurting one of my nearest & dearest (or an animal)
User48751490 · 27/02/2022 19:47

@RishiRich

I would be extremely worried if I was living in Sweden or Finland (Ukraine goes without saying). On Russia's border, aligned with the West but not in NATO and Putin's gone insane and started waving his nuclear weapons around.
Fair chance he has his focus on Finland soon. Wouldn't be surprised.
Seeriously · 27/02/2022 19:49

I don’t think he will resort to going nuclear. The USA, France, UK and other countries have huge nuclear capacity too including deterrents.
China will not be on his side if he wants to go nuclear - no country wants the world shot to pieces! And China probably has bigger nuclear capacity than Russia so he basically has the entire world against him.

Fingers crossed that they are able to reach some sort of peaceful negotiation and then Putin won’t see himself as the “losing” side.

I think I may have mine too ( because Historic Artefact) One or two friends put it to a use it was actually fit for (think Andrex)
yoolia · 27/02/2022 19:50

There is honestly no point in trying to survive a nuclear war. Head for the epicentre.

Well, on the current showing and rate of attrition in this campaign he’s going to have to rebuild his army first..

The Soviets won, but got their backsides well and truely kicked in the process of trying to invade Finland way back and I expect the Finns would fight every bit as hard as the Ukrainians.
