Interesting report, just heard, from John Sweeney (known for his ferreting work on Scientology and Epstein et al for those who don't know) reporting from central Kyiv.

He's said that (many) Russian troops have been under the impression that they are (still) on a training exercise and are genuinely surprised when they switch their mobile phones on and find that they are in Ukraine.

Fighting, he says, remains in remote areas from the city centre which has been eerily quiet and that defensive action is thwarting the offensive.

Sweeney stated that, if we thought of Kyiv as London, he is in Vauxhall and the fighting is in Croydon and North London.

Of course, things can change quickly, but I have no reason to disbelieve Sweeney and I do know his lyrical tones enough to know that it was him reporting.

He also stated that the word from inside The Kremlin is one of increasing tensions between Putin and those close to him.

Browder, Putin's #1 enemy and protagonist in The Magnitsky Act, has always maintained that if we want to hit Putin then it's his assets that you have to go after and Sweeney reported that Gary Kasparov (Chess Grand Master for those who don't know) reflected that view about Putin and the oligarchs, saying "follow the money" and hit them in the pocket to change things.

Sweeney also reported the strange juxtaposition that Ukraine's president, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, poses with his truly brave and articulate words and actions considering he was a comedian in the vein of Mr Bean prior to his presidency.

A point in case that many humourists show an ability to grasp reality by the balls far more effectively than the jokes we often vote for.

Its also why the UK shouldn't be getting into trade deals with India, we should be forging closer links with Europe again, its where our future lies, even if its not in the EU.

A relative told me if we left the EU it would cause Russia to do something big. I have no idea of why and how they came to that conclusion (but they would have that knowledge).

I'm also very uncomfortable about what has been going on on our home soil with regards Cummings/Boris and brexit.

Cummings loves chaos. He was all for brexit, then caused chaos in our government (not that I don't agree partygate should have been exposed). He's has had close ties with Russia in the past.

As much as I don't understand any of the complexities and wouldn't even begin to pretend I did. There's a part of me that's very uncomfortable with how much of a part Russia played in brexit and the chaos on our own government.

Hopefully answering a few things people have raised.

Finland and Sweden threatened, many people don't realise they were once part of the Russian Empire. Neither they nor Ukraine can join NATO immediately as there are procedures and a waiting period.

NATO have agreed to supply more weapons including tech, intelligence etc as soon as possible.

Heard an involved broadcast with British general. Apparently can't just 'take him out', against the rules apparently!! We're meant to wait and then he'll be charged with war crimes. Personally, I don't have much of a life. I'll volunteer for them to strap a fucking big bomb to myself if they know where he is. Been crying watching Zelensky this morning, what a man.

This is concerning me more, from the Telegraph (not sure if behind a paywall).

The Russian Tos-1 Buratino weapons are understood to have crossed into Ukraine, although they have yet to be used. Moscow has previously employed them in Chechnya and Syria.

Thermobaric missiles contain a highly explosive fuel and chemical mix and send out supersonic blast waves that can rip buildings and bodies apart. Officials said their use would cause "indiscriminate violence".

OnlyOpenMouthToChangeFeet · 26/02/2022 11:18

Sorry, explanation of how the bomb works didn't post with pic.

  1. Precision-guided bomb strikes building entrance
  2. Primary explosion: fine aerosol mist of highly explosive chemical mixture penetrates the building
  3. Secondary explosion blasts through corridors at supersonic speed
  4. Pressure wave kills anyone sheltering deeper within the structure

Thank you for this info, I'm now following John Sweeney and listening/watching his reports.

Thank you. Interesting about some of the troops thinking they were on an exercise!

I think the story that some claimed thought they were on exercise was flagged up in other sources on Thursday when the Ukraines caught their first prisoners.

The sceptical elsewhere have been a little bit Hmm over at least some stories. I think if I was a frightened conscript carrying live rounds who was in the process of being manhandled by some very hacked off Ukrainian soldiers I think I’d be very tempted to claim I didn’t mean it…

Who knows what the reality is, truth is the first casualty of war, etc..

Gingerwarthog · 26/02/2022 11:45

Thanks Alec -also now following Sweeney

Cummings loves chaos.

This really stuck out for me. What gives you this impression? I ask because someone I used to work with, who had meetings with Cummings, also described him as an old fashioned anarchist.

It is interesting yes but not believable for one minute.
Tigersonvaseline · 26/02/2022 11:51

Notmagin

That's a good list!
I feel better after reading that.
Certainly collectively more formidable than I had thought.

cakeorwine · 26/02/2022 11:52

Who knows what the reality is, truth is the first casualty of war, etc

Totally.

During the Battle of Britain, there were regular claims about aircraft numbers being shot down that were false.

It's hard to know what is truth in war. Especially in the information age with the potential for fake videos, old images being shown as modern ones and even videos with deep fakes.

Along with social media.

itsgettingweird Please do not derail one of the most decent informative threads with brexit whinging again - if you want to, start your own thread, but please don't use this one by starting pointless unconnected arguments. The brexit vote was seven years ago, it bears no relation to Putin losing his marbles and invading Ukraine.

The 'encroachment' of Nato and the Ukraine's open prosperity are more of a driver than one small country voting one way or another years ago.

Tigersonvaseline · 26/02/2022 11:55

short video of Ukranian national stopping by a stranded russian tank

apparently the translation is:
Soldiers say they are out of gas. Driver offers to tow them back to russia. Everyone laughs. Russian soldiers ask for news on how they are doing in war. Driver tell them that Ukraine is winning, russians are surrendering and impliest that they should too.

dreamingbohemian · 26/02/2022 12:25

Sadly Brexit is not totally irrelevant, Russia has been meddling in British politics for years, trying to sow disunity and polarisation and weaken the UK from within, weaken EU/NATO unity.

Why would it do this? Precisely so that it can pursue its aims in Eastern Europe, a weakened UK/EU/NATO would not be able to stop Russia from reclaiming what it sees as its rightful role.

So I agree we shouldn't let this thread get too sidetracked, but I also think it's helpful to put the invasion into this broader picture of Russia's malign activities in Europe, including the UK.

Keepyourheadscrewedon · 26/02/2022 12:28

I am really not getting into brexit, but there is far more to it than what you have suggested dreaming lets leave it there.

Armadeus · 26/02/2022 12:30

CNN reporting that flame throwers plus air to ground missile systems have been observed being transported to the Ukrainian border. Used in Afghanistan. God help the poor folk in Ukraine. Putin clearly is not frightened of committing widescale atrocities against civilians.

I'm not brexit whinging. Don't make untrue statements.

For a start you have NO IDEA of my position on this or what I voted.

What I've said - or rather asked - is based on something a family member said that has now happened - and based on what we've heard about Cummings - chaos - Russian links - and his turn completely against Johnson - is there possibly some truth in a link?

What you need to stop doing is attacking people who you perceive to have a different view point to you and derailing a good thread that's discussing a very serious situation.

FatFucker · 26/02/2022 12:34

Thanks @notimagain interesting link.

Tigersonvaseline · 26/02/2022 12:34

Right now I'm far happier too be in NATO with our allies than the EU?
The trading block.

dreamingbohemian · 26/02/2022 12:37

Well yes of course, and by no means am I saying 'Russia caused Brexit', but it was seen as something that would benefit Russia and it did what it could to help it along. Even if the overall impact was minimal we should acknowledge what Russia tried to do.

Right now there is a lot of pressure on the Tories to do something about Russian money in the UK, to crack down on corruption, but there should also be pressure to limit Russian political and media influence here. It is subversion pure and simple.

Cam77 · 26/02/2022 12:40

@Armadeus
A lot of second guessing what is going to happen. Having bad weapons in place doesn't mean they will be used. Though of course there are recent precedents such as the "shock and awe" invasion phase of the Iraq War in which the US military massacred an approximate 7000 civilians in two months, including many children. Let's hope Russia withdraws it's troops asap and diplomacy can resume.
