If you need a distraction from things

Try Semantle.

It's like Wordle in that you need to guess the word of the day, but works by semantics. So you input a word and it will tell you how close you are. You have infinite guesses.

For example, ysterday's word was 'costly' with expensive, cumbersome and burdensome being the three closest words.

I'm currently 840 words away with a similarity of 47%. I started at under 2%.

Anybody else attempting it?

@Nomorechange

Hi OP. I hope your pillow is hot tonight and that you wear odd shoes tomorrow.

As if I need anything else to take me away from housework.

Also, I don't know what chat this is, but you're 100% being unreasonable.

Not even a trigger warning Grin

You obviously got distracted there as you clearly meant to say "Thank you, OP, for the wonderful diversion."

So I'll say "My pleasure, I'm glad you're enjoying it!" 🤣🤣🤣

(But I'll keep the warm pillow, it might stop me freezing in bed tonight!)

@IWishMyUsernameWasX

My first try at this today... and I got it on my first guess! Tomorrow I may get to find out how the game actually works... 🤣
Whaaaat!? That’s amazing 🤣

Ps Thank you @ElegantlyTouched for the wonderful diversion Grin

@SmolCat
@TheChosenTwo

"@SmolCat the previous words (999, 998) look nor sound like the winning word, no. The clue is that they DON’T SOUND the same. wink

Got it! Thank you!"

I had 998 & 999 today and quite a few others in the 990's but gave up in the end.
Very frustrated with the answer, seemed to not follow from the other words.

Hasselhoffsheadband · 27/02/2022 18:20

I have got the nearest word but cannot get the word at all, on the verge of giving up!

BakeOffRewatch · 27/02/2022 18:52

It took me 4 guesses once I saw “DON’T SOUND” to get hot, then 18 in total for the answer.

There’s so many words, getting hot is the impossible part! “Luscious” was the closest I got on my own, similarity of 29.57.

Think more about your relatives. Great aunt, grand ma, etc . They come in all shapes and sizes, and they all sound a bit different. All family but different roles.
Onaloop · 27/02/2022 20:45

Omg yesterday couldn't get anywhere near it but today I got it in 4 with a random guess.

Am I missing something? I get that it's words that are semantically similar but yesterday seemed so hard I am thinking maybe there is a particular way of thinking, or something I'm not getting??

WhatsMyNameGonnaBeNow · 27/02/2022 21:13

Got it in 75 today. I was stuck for ages at 995 and then for ages more at 997! Very addictive Smile.

Hasselhoffsheadband · 27/02/2022 21:15

Thanks! I gave up in the end, I can't believe 999 was the closest word, I wouldn't have thought that? And once I had found out the word I tried some words that I would have thought would be much closer and they were cold?!

It is quite a good game though, am definitely going to play again!

BertieBotts · 27/02/2022 21:23

This is really fun, I love it! I thought I'd be stuck for ages reading your posts but I got it in 55! I think it would have been forty something if I didn't think I'd already put that word in and then when I checked I hadn't.

Really appeals to the way my brain works.

What was yesterday's impossible word?

BertieBotts · 27/02/2022 21:25

Once it goes past midnight I'll share what my process was today so I don't spoil today's word.

Yes I did the same with a few related words. A bit confusing!

Yesterday’s semantle.novalis.org/nearby_1k/aWRlb2xvZ2ljYWw=

And please do share your thought processes- I’m not quite sure of the best approach yet.

LoveFall · 27/02/2022 21:47

Just got it in 33. Quite pleased.

BertieBotts · 27/02/2022 23:01

Just showed it to DS1 and he got it in 45 although I gave him a clue for word 35 because he was circling around and not seeing a huge obvious connection I could see :o obviously easier with hindsight! He is going to take it to school and try with his friends tomorrow.

BertieBotts · 27/02/2022 23:02

I think you have to be quite good at lateral thinking. The connection doesn't always seem logical.

ElegantlyTouched · 28/02/2022 00:24

So yesterday's:

I started with 'cat' 21.04. Obvious words such as 'dog' and 'feline' were lower, ad I got nowhere for a while til I followed the words you think of in connection to your word advice above and randomly tried 'lap' which was only marginally below cat.

I then got 'sofa' at 33.25 on my 13th go but couldn't get higher. Other furniture, rooms and verbs connected to them were lower. I then tried to think what else you could have in a room with a sofa and randomly tried what turned out to be the right answer. So got none in the top 1000 but was somehow able to make the leap.

TheChosenTwo · 28/02/2022 00:25

I solved Semantle #30 in 79 guesses. My first guess had a similarity of 9.71. My first word in the top 1000 was at guess #24. My penultimate guess had a similarity of 32.89 (869/1000). semantle.novalis.org/

Blimey! Got 994 early on and then took ages!

Wallawallakoala · 28/02/2022 00:44

Fantastic distraction, thank you. Is there some sort of strategy I'm missing though haha

NewbieDivergent · 28/02/2022 00:46

Thank you for this op, got it in 34,I'm going to like this game.

I don't think so, inasmuch as, as far as I understand it, it's based on statistics rather than anything logical. But you can tell if you're heading in the right direction.

JulesRimetStillGleaming · 28/02/2022 01:43

First try 54. I was 904 on guess 17 but still took ages after that. Think I'm still working out how it works.

2022newyearnewname · 28/02/2022 06:26

Much better today! Such a lucky random first word from me, but I kind of spiralled then it clicked.

I solved Semantle #30 in 51 guesses. My first guess had a similarity of 28.92 (701/1000).My penultimate guess had a similarity of 33.02 (873/1000). semantle.novalis.org/
