Try Semantle.

It's like Wordle in that you need to guess the word of the day, but works by semantics. So you input a word and it will tell you how close you are. You have infinite guesses.

For example, ysterday's word was 'costly' with expensive, cumbersome and burdensome being the three closest words.

I'm currently 840 words away with a similarity of 47%. I started at under 2%.

Anybody else attempting it?

If you guys want a clue, you can DM me and I'll answer what you want 😊

lljkk · 02/03/2022 10:29

Omg, so pleased with myself- got it in 51 guesses just now. From 369th to answer. So far the game answers are all very common English words, I find. You don't need big vocabulary to do well.

SmolCat · 02/03/2022 10:33

@RunningFromInsanity

Can anyone tell me if it’s a noun/verb/adverb etc? I’ve not got close to a single one of these yet Sad
I’ve PMed you. How many guesses are you so far today and what’s your highest number?
lljkk · 02/03/2022 10:34

I thought it was cunning genius when PP wrote suitable yesterday. By ~10 pm, perfectly reasonable hint to give, imho.

imnottoofussed · 02/03/2022 10:35

Surprised myself got it in 23 guesses

lljkk · 02/03/2022 10:38

Looking at nearest word list - some of you must be using quite fancy words. Think simpler. Words that someone with age 9 reading level would know.

RunningFromInsanity · 02/03/2022 10:41

@SmolCat I’ve just got a green word! Woohoo. Still stuck though Grin

Ha me too.

I think #28 (if I’ve remembered correctly) wasn’t that commonplace? All the others after that have been more so though.
RunningFromInsanity · 02/03/2022 10:43

Omfg I got it!! First one ever. I did have to use a thesaurus for inspiration!

I’m going to retire on a high now.

SmolCat · 02/03/2022 10:45

I’m going to retire on a high now.
Grin Well done!

fancyfrogs · 02/03/2022 10:53

I solved Semantle #32 in 58 guesses. My first guess had a similarity of 13.39. My first word in the top 1000 was at guess #26. My penultimate guess had a similarity of 32.20. semantle.novalis.org/

A lot better for me today, and in one sitting!

Drawerofcrap · 02/03/2022 11:03

Just realised guess 29 wasn't my 1st green it was guess 18, but I'm at a loss and seem to be gett8ng further away fm 988 rather than closer. I'm at guess 87 now

LightSpeeds · 02/03/2022 11:06

I got it in 70 today - which rather beats yesterday's nearly 700 guesses (is that a record?!)

Feeling rather pleased 😏

BertieBotts · 02/03/2022 11:07

I didn't get a gloomy theme! I went a different way.

If you're stuck, try looking for words that are in common categories (for example, not today's example:) sycamore, oak, pine are all trees, so try more trees - acacia, redwood, fir. If you run out of steam there, try related things like forest, wood, jungle. Or parts of a tree - leaves, trunk, fruit. Anything that gets you higher start branching off that.

EdwinsActsOfKindness · 02/03/2022 11:09

Got it! Only took me 131 goes!

Drawerofcrap - I followed the top tip of trying other words within that ‘umbrella’ and that helped (before that, I was going more and more specific until my lack of technical knowledge stumped me!)

SierraHotelIndiaTango · 02/03/2022 11:10

Wow got it in 65 ! Second day of playing ( gave up yesterday )

weebarra · 02/03/2022 11:11

I solved Semantle #32 in 73 guesses. My first guess had a similarity of 16.64. My first word in the top 1000 was at guess #41. My penultimate guess had a similarity of 72.23 (998/1000). semantle.novalis.org/

I got stuck on 982 for ages and then just started branching out!

21butterflies · 02/03/2022 11:11

I got it in 61 today!!!
This is addictive 😂

SouperNoodle · 02/03/2022 11:11

I was just typing in random words and found it in guess 84!!! 😱

BabbleBee · 02/03/2022 11:16

Early guesses are freezing cold. I don’t have much hope for today…

Heronatemygoldfish · 02/03/2022 11:17

I solved Semantle #32 in 65 guesses. My first guess had a similarity of -4.21. My first word in the top 1000 was at guess #60. My penultimate guess had a similarity of 2.75. semantle.novalis.org/

First ever try at Semantle. I think that's probably not too bad but I spent the first 50 or so guesses shouting at the screen that none of it made sense! When I got it, I just laughed.

Ulysses · 02/03/2022 11:24

I solved Semantle #32 in 48 guesses. My first guess had a similarity of 0.51. My first word in the top 1000 was at guess #40. My penultimate guess had a similarity of 47.83 (912/1000). semantle.novalis.org/

SlightlyJaded · 02/03/2022 11:38

62 guesses today. Easier word than yesterday but took me twice as many guesses.

I want to play again.

BabbleBee · 02/03/2022 11:42

I jumped to 992 on guess 27 but going around in circles now! Argh!
