Do you listen to the radio?

I never do. Wonder if I should.
If you do listen, which station do you listen to? How do you listen to it (what kind of device/app)?
What time do you listen? Any particular time of day and why?

I like Jo Whiley's music
i like sounds of the seventies
Steve Wright at 300 pm often has good tunes
Quite like Liza Tarbuck in small doses
Miss Graham Norton's saturday show, i know i could listen on Virgin but i forget

CormoranStrike · 15/02/2022 08:24

Lots, either via my Alexa or BBC sounds.

There’s some great R4 panel shows and comedy - just a Minute, the News Quiz, I’ve Never Seen Star Wars, Unbelievable Truth.

Live I enjoy Jason Manford and Frank Skinner on absolute radio and radio five live.

In the car. Local station

What do you like There are great documentaries, plays, books, quiz programmes as well as current affairs. I like a wide range of stuff - things like The Infinite Monkey Cage for light hearted approach to science, The Bottom Line for indepth look at business

I don't know, I don't really know anything about anything Blush and it's becoming more and more obvious the older my DC get and start asking questions. We never had the radio on when I was a child, and I wasn't really allowed to listen to music. Is it possible to listen via my tablet? I have speakers I can stream to from it.

I listen on my tablet. Get the BBC Sounds app. Other stations will have their own website or app.
AffIt · 15/02/2022 09:19

I switch around between BBC stations depending on the time of day - normally R4 in the morning and though the day, R2 at the weekend (I like Liza Tarbuck, Craig Charles and Elaine Paige!), R3 in the background if I'm reading before bed, and sometimes R6 (mostly only for Stuart Maconie, though).

I can't abide commercial radio, though, the adverts irritate me.

HoppyHop · 15/02/2022 09:39

Mainly radio 2, Virgin & greatest hits radio. I listen all day when WFH, in the car when doing kid taxi and in the kitchen when in there. It's always on, as it was at home when I was growing up I suppose.

I'm trying to find, without success a breakfast show I like. Anyone got suggestions? Zoe Ball's sycophantic attitude with guests grates with me, as does Chris Evans on Virgin for his endless talk (lectures) about running and life improvement!

Fetchthevet · 15/02/2022 09:58

@dayswithaY no judgement from me, I feel exactly the same!

@MrsJBaptiste I love Popmaster - annoys me so much when people ring at 10.30!

MostlyNormalSometimesOdd · 15/02/2022 10:28

Radio 6 music all day until after teatime, then it's Get it on with Bryan Burnett on Radio Scotland if not out for a walk. TV rarely goes on before 8pm

RonCarlos · 15/02/2022 10:31

I agree about breakfast shows. I can't find one I like. Radio 3?!

ExtremelyDelighted · 15/02/2022 11:38

Very rarely in the house, I grew up in a house where the radio was always on and it totally does my head in now. I never listen to music stations.

In the car I listen to 5Live or 4, or podcasts (mostly BBC ones). I listen with it on very quietly through my phone while working sometimes just for a bit of background noise but nothing too interesting otherwise it distracts me.

I also have a transistor radio in my greenhouse and listen to the football at weekends while I potter in there.

onedayoranother · 15/02/2022 11:56

Radio 4 on all the time at home (unless one of the stupid comedy shows). In the car it might be radio 4 or Chill, or Heart 80s.

DrunkenKoala · 15/02/2022 13:02

Radio 2 - weekday mornings
Absolute - weekday afternoons
LBC - weekends

ImJustMadAboutSaffron · 15/02/2022 13:06

@PyjamaMamma

I do, in the car and sometimes in the house when I’m working. I listen to the local radio station - moved from Heart when they replaced the local breakfast show with Amanda Holden.
And I would have moved too!
TheMoth · 15/02/2022 21:49

Interesting r4/r6 crossover on here. Do you think they know?
And I reckon fellow r6 listeners are probably 35+

I like how many female presenters they have. Don't always like Lauren Laverne's music (not a dance fan) but I think she's my fave female one. Especially the science of life and all that. Not a big fan of Mary Ann hobbs. Too whisperyGrin and a bit meh. Maybe the r4 crossover is cos I learn stuff from r6 too.

If you feel like you don't know anything about anything then download the BBC sounds app and start by listening about current affairs - my entry level drug would either be PM which is an hour long, or newscast which isn't on the live radio but is on the BBC sounds app. It's on five days a week and is usually about 30 minutes.

When you listen you then end up hearing about other things you're interested in and then you end up googling them or putting other radio shows on. I sadly work full time so don't listen to as much as I would like to but BBC sounds is full of really interesting programmes on so many topics!

LubaLuca · 15/02/2022 22:00

I usually have LBC on when I'm working. I find talking easier to tune in and out of than music which distracts me too much.

emmetgirl · 15/02/2022 22:04

Loads. Radio 4 or 5live

Forgothowmuchlhatehomeschoolin · 15/02/2022 22:05

Radio X - love it

Joy2TheWorld · 15/02/2022 22:11

Sooo funny you have asked this. I've started listening to the radio through the TV whilst WFH. I am loving it, Smooth all the way for me! It feels very calming and relaxing, not sure why, but I've been loving it lately Smile (I do also like heart/magic, but pretty much stick to smooth) I really miss the local morning shows though. Heart and Capital were my go to's back then. Just not the same anymore!

KimchiWithMe · 15/02/2022 22:12

Radio 2 is on all day on Alexa at home.

I listen all hours of the day, driving to work in the early hours (Vanessa Feltz, love her), driving home late at night. On a Sunday afternoon whilst cooking a roast dinner (Paul O'Grady), Friday night golden hour with Tony Blackburn and my absolute fave, Liza Tarbuck on a Saturday evening.

It's a comforting, familiar buzz in the background all the time and never really disappoints.

Steve Wright has to go though...

They are exactly the programmes I listen to on Radio 2. I might have Ken Bruce on for background music but I haven't listened to him for months now since I discovered Boom radio. I cannot stand Steve Wright and they lost my drive time listening when Simon Mayo went.
Lolly86 · 16/02/2022 08:26

Smooth radio played on the echo dot just in the background

Well, Lauren Laverne does Desert Island Discs, and aren't there a couple of other 6 DJs with R4 spots too? (Cerys maybe?) I think there is a lot of crossover with the two demographics.

I really like Lauren on 6; she's great with guests and listeners alike and I like her humour. Love Cerys although her music is a bit out-there sometimes. Mary Ann Hobbs gets on my tits with her constant self-conscious little laugh and why does she keep playing metal on a weekday morning?!? I'd love to have Radcliffe and Maconie back in an afternoon; don't really get to hear their weekend show as it's a bit early. I love Iggy too. But Tom Ravenscroft is the best.

Livpool · 16/02/2022 09:48

Used to be only in the car but now I wfh it is always on

KimchiWithMe · 16/02/2022 10:10

@sluj I always listen to Popmaster and I do really like Sara Cox too. Simon Mayo was excellent though.
