I mean the ones that you'd never heard of until someone you met/a friend of a friend said "oh yes I run a bat sanctuary/teach maths to prisoners/paint portraits of dead hamsters".

I used to know a woman who studied psychology, and understanding people with problems. she got a job for a while in a prison, and did some therapy stuff with the prisoners. But one of the things she decided to do whilst there, was to teach some prisoners how to dance, some times in their cells. But she had trained at the ballet years before,, so I just imagined the scenes in the cells,or in a bigger communal area,, of all the prisoners, leaping around like Wayne Sleep in their ballet shoes.

Ear print specialist

Chicken sexer. I don’t know anyone who does this but I once saw the job advertised. They had to work out if chicks were male or female, I assume so they could be kept for future breeding or eaten in adulthood.

Tea tester, he works for a tea company and works out the blend needed from each batch to produce tea that tastes the same. If his annual leave coincides with a new batch he has some delivered to wherever he is staying along with ‘local’ water.

Makeup artist working for funeral directors. Makeovers for the dead, esp open casket ceremonies.
Useless information - Whoopi Goldberg used to do that job.

I seem to have boring friends and acquaintances, when I was a child we had a neighbour who worked for a firework company.

Not weird but we had a local bonfire and he would do the fireworks display, so we got a cross between garden fireworks and professional display.

As a kid that was a cool job

That must be such a disheartening job. Knowing that 999 people our of a thousand are going to just chuck it straight in the recycling without even removing it from the box - yet you still have to be so meticulous with it, for the 0.01% who do read it, to cover the company in case of any potential legal issues, so you can't even have a laugh by writing stuff like "Can give you the windy-pops and a voice like Rod Stewart!"

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 27/01/2022 06:23

Stripper (although I might just add she's doing it whilst doing her PHD). Makes great money and has lovely girlfriend. She always said that she's glad she likes girls because the behaviour of some men in her line of work would be enough to create real issues later down the line.

Yup, I was headhunted to write instruction manuals for kitchen appliances. How freaking dull, I just couldn't, no matter how good the money.
Maggiesgirl · 27/01/2022 06:55

@JudgeJ how wonderful. I have just been reading about the women transport pilots. Your Mother was a very brave woman.

I knew someone who worked as a translator/interpreter (or something) for GCHQ. Another mutual friend used to tease her by asking seemingly innocent questions about her job, "do you work in an office, are you mostly reading or listening, etc" and she just used to reply, "I can't say" all the time.
