I mean the ones that you'd never heard of until someone you met/a friend of a friend said "oh yes I run a bat sanctuary/teach maths to prisoners/paint portraits of dead hamsters".

I have a friend who is a professional comedian.

Another friend is a airline pilot which although not unusual is very cool - especially the cockpit photos I've seen.

@judgej
That's Amazing,
I knew a lady who was an electrician during the war and she wired up the spotlights used on the Lancasters in the dam busters raid. I thought she was so cool.

An acquaintance of mine used to be a 'receptionist' at a brothel

My DM took early retirement but got bored so got a range of strange but easy jobs. The oddest one was a public toilet traffic surveyor. She had to sit (in the car) beside various toilet blocks around the country and count how many people used them per hour.

JustUseTheDoorSanta · 27/01/2022 08:12

@05adulthumanfemalemum - a different friend in a war situation had a job opening doors shouting "friend or foe?" and dodging bullets from the non-friends. His mum commented how pleased she was that he was doing translation so he was safe at the base. After slightly choking on my tea, I warmly agreed. I'm not sure if he's ever told her what he actually did.

Prosthetics maker, arms dealer.

Are they the same person?

Maybe they deal in prosthetic arms?

@Youngstreet

My dh's aunt was a tick turner for Fogartys.
Curious to know what this is?
Youngstreet · 27/01/2022 08:28

@riverpebbles
Dh’s aunt literally turned pillowcases the right way round after they had been made and had to pop the corners out with her thumbs before folding them.
She did this all day.

Crikey how immensely tedious

But why??
Youngstreet · 27/01/2022 08:35

@sweetbellyhigh. absolutely. She lived in a very rural area with few local jobs.

Just remembered dd’s school friend is a trapeze artist in a circus.

Imagine explaining to the police why you’re sat outside public toilets!
seekinglondonlife · 27/01/2022 08:43

@sweetbellyhigh no idea why, but it was a local council initiative. Maybe to justify the cost of services?

Poor woman, must have tested her patience and stamina.

Oh to be a trapeze artist 💗 My photographer is also a stuntwoman, she's amazing.

A friend of a friend is a zookeeper.

ImInStealthMode · 27/01/2022 08:55

Oh and DP's sister works in dentistry, pretty normal job except her surgery also looks after the animals at aforementioned zoo. She's assisted with an extraction for a gorilla recently.

SprintingAtlas · 27/01/2022 08:57

NC for this as it's a little sensitive and very, very niche so definitely potentially outing, but I know someone who is a submarine trials officer for the Navy.

KittenKong · 27/01/2022 09:08

What are the submarines charged with? (Boom boom) 🐿

Soubriquet · 27/01/2022 09:10

Dog swimmer Grin

She does hydrotherapy for dogs and actually gets in the water with them to help stretch their limbs

My dad collects pig hearts from abattoirs and removes the valves then delivers the valves to hospital for valve replacements.

Grandville · 27/01/2022 09:16

DEFRA often has interesting jobs advertised. I once saw an ad for Head of Bees which was quite well paid.

NellieWellietheEllie · 27/01/2022 09:17

I always say I have a niche role in the civil service. My role is niche because it's very boring (and not at all secret), but I like to think acquaintances imagine me working for MI6.

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 27/01/2022 09:23

I met someone who modified vehicles to be used in film stunts. It was a more fascinating conversation that you might think (possibly because I'm a bit nerdy).
