Childrens tv just isn’t the same nowadays. As a child I loved:
The raggy dolls
Barney- the dog not the dinosaur
Gran
Kissyfur
Jungle run
The tribe

What Programmes did you love?

Record Breakers. Roy Castle's eternal enthusiasm and cheerful demeanour.

Metal Mickey on Saturday teatime. Perhaps more family than children's television with slightly risque humour.

I spend a significant portion of my childhood without a TV in our house. My dad had some issues with the effects of tv on young minds. I don't know exactly when he caved and bought a telly but I was maybe about 9?
I barely remember any childrens tv. I remember watching the muppets on a Sunday at my grans and grange hill after school when I was older. Oh and I loved Art Attack.
Conversations like this are the only time I feel a bit left out.

Wasn't Art Attack...it was the one with Tony Hart and Morph

There was Take Hart and Hartbeat. I adored Tony Hart. He's my 'if he gets Yewtreed it'll kill me' person.

Watoo Watoo (intergalactic SUPERBIRD!)

I have no idea how I watched it. I'm not French and nobody I know remembers it being broadcast in the UK. But it must have been!

@BasiliskFace YAY! I'm very glad I didn't dream that cartoon, and all the geese, and the weird space ship and the whistle for all the other Watoos to come down from wherever the heck they came from!

I've no idea if children's tv is not the same nowadays, as it is marginalised onto separate channels. I think even 30 minutes a day on BBC1 and/or ITV1 would reduce this marginalisation. We can cope without Pointless.

The Perishers was great! One of the 5 min cartoons at 5.30pm between Blue Pater and Ask the Family. Also Willo the Wisp was in that time slot.

I loved Captain Caveman too. That was a longer 20 min cartoon that was on before John Craven’s newsround.

Hyenaormeercat · 29/01/2022 10:34

Does anyone remember these from the 90s..I remember them being on while I was doing my kids tea so must have been 5ish..
1)A drummer boy appearing through a rock...
2) some children trying to find their father and a case of missing soil samples..while being chased by shadowy 'men in suits'

Hyenaormeercat · 29/01/2022 11:49
  1. A dubbed series about a boy in Lapland trying to follow traditional family culture of reindeer farming(?) while still living in modern age. They dressed in tradional costume?

Is anyone old enough to remember Robinson Crusoe? Every holiday - with a very handsome blonde Robinson!
Yes! And didn't he have a dog that died? I used to cry every time that dog died. We emigrated to Australia when I was 9, so there's UK programmes that I missed for many years that I've no knowledge of. However, there's Australian programmes that people have no idea of, one of my favourites was an American one called "Gilligan's Island" which no one in England has heard of. That used to be on at the same time as "I Dream of Jeannie", which was shown in the UK, with Larry Hagman (JR in Dallas) as the main lead. That has been shown in the Uk years ago. Re Bananaman, on Blue Peter they showed you how to make a Bananaman doll with yellow marigolds and an Action Man. My friend and I did it once, but only had pink marigolds so called him Strawberryman! And we were in our 30's then, and not even drunk!
WildRosie · 30/01/2022 17:42

I remember Robinson Crusoe. It was one of those peculiar old black and white programmes that frequently appeared during school holidays. The Flashing Blade, Champion The Wonder Horse and Flash Gordon were others. And White Horses but that's before my time.
