How many grams of pasta do you have per serving?

Just wondering what a sensible portion of dry pasta is for a healthy serving?

OP posts:
CeeceeBloomingdale · 19/01/2022 23:04

I do two handfuls per person for me or my DDs or a 500gm bag for the four of us as DH will hoover up any spare. We don't eat it with a heavy sauce or meat so dont mind it being a bit over portion wise.

mistermagpie · 19/01/2022 23:10

I use 250g for five of us (two adults, three children aged 6 and under) and that's about right. Sometimes there are leftovers but there never isn't enough.

I started weighing it because I constantly made too much and had to throw it away!

Why? You could have used it for pasta salad.

A 500g bag does 6 portions, so about 80 g per portion. Dry weight of course.

On that note, I'm dieting at the moment and it drives me up the wall websites and products listing nutrition by cooked weight. I weigh my ingredients before cooking not after!

ArcheryAnnie · 19/01/2022 23:14

Am baffled at the people who throw leftover pasta away.

safariboot · 19/01/2022 23:14

PS: The pasta is actually something I don't weigh, I just eyeball the fraction of the pack. Other things I do weigh, like rice; even when I wasn't dieting I was terrible for misjudging how much rice to cook.

canbage · 19/01/2022 23:17

Yes if you ever make too much why would you not save it for another day rather than bin it.

RockinHorseShit · 19/01/2022 23:20

Erm. I don't really measure properly Confused

But... about 2 big handfuls each of penne, twists etc for me & teen DD, 3 for DH

About a 2cm finger & thumb circles working of spaghetti for us & 3cm circles worth for DH

Which is always spot on for us, sometimes I'll have a bit less than DD

canbage · 19/01/2022 23:23

Yes. I find the easiest way for me to put on weight is to eat massive portions of carbs. I eat totally normally. If I don’t weigh my 80g of pasta. half a mug full of rice/cous cous etc, that easily doubles and I put weight on. I wouldn’t call that a diet.

I would find that restrictive, having to stick to strict weights & weighing it out in case it was 10/20g over. So for me that would be a diet but you can disagree.

RampantIvy · 19/01/2022 23:26

Weighing rice and pasta isn't dieting. It's odd that you would think that. It's just being sensible. I don't weigh vegetables, and meat/fish comes in portions anyway so I don't weigh that either.

canbage · 19/01/2022 23:26

But that makes perfect sense. I don't diet because I weigh pasta and rice.

Maybe I'm odd then, weighing out my carbs & sticking to set weights would be a diet for me.

LemonMuffins · 19/01/2022 23:27

100 each

Cheeseycheeseycheesecheese · 19/01/2022 23:27

I used to just bung a load in and hope for the best... however, for the past year I've become a big fan of using my fitness pal and not being sure of the weight annoyed me, so now I weigh everything, and have 75g pasta

PickAChew · 19/01/2022 23:29

I do about 50g of dry pasta for me, 75 for dh. A little more for fresh pasta.

canbage · 19/01/2022 23:29

I don't think it's odd that I have a different opinion of what a diet is to you. You can be sensible without weighing out carbs.

PickAChew · 19/01/2022 23:35

@emilyintheSE

Another confused poster here wondering why so many of you weigh out your pastaConfused

Just why?

Because if I cook myself too much it goes to waste. I got into the habit when I was calorie counting, a few years back. I have digital scales so it's hardly difficult.
PickAChew · 19/01/2022 23:38

You can't do that if you do it properly and toss the pasta in the sauce before serving.
ThunderSocks · 19/01/2022 23:44

125g EACH for me and DP, plus 125g for DCs (3 & 5) Judging by this thread, we must be right greedy guts! Blush

user1745 · 20/01/2022 00:50

80-100g. I tend to have pasta as its own meal in just a sauce but if I were to have it with something else such as chicken or fish I would have less.

RampantIvy · 20/01/2022 06:59

True. In which case I would reheat it for lunch.

murderontheorientexpress · 20/01/2022 07:06

I'm rubbish at getting pasta quantities right so I actually read the packet last night when I was cooking linguine.

The packet said 500g served approximately 6. I measured out 200g for two of us as I'd only had a bagel for breakfast all day and I was starving. DC ate more than me so I reckon I was bang on the recommendation which was more than usual for me.

Mookie81 · 20/01/2022 07:41

@Decorbreadthegingerate

I count out eight tubes of penne
Based on normal MN threads I can't tell whether this is a joke or not ConfusedGrin.

But it goes all rubbery doesn't it?
RampantIvy · 20/01/2022 08:01

No it doesn't go rubbery. A few minutes in the microwave, maybe adding a little water first, and it will be fine. I'm shocked that someone would throw leftover spaghetti Bolognese or lasagne away.

Bagelsandbrie · 20/01/2022 08:04

I never weigh anything, in fact I don’t even own kitchen scales. I just guess! Couple of handfuls each!
