Just wondering what a sensible portion of dry pasta is for a healthy serving?

When you have any form of diabetes (I currently have gestational diabetes)- (and don't want diabetes in the future!)- it makes sense to weigh it!

@PieonaBarm

As much as I can fit in my face without being sick
This is also my measure.

Covered in cheese, too, on top of the sauce.

MrsAvocet · 19/01/2022 22:24

I usually do 250g for me, DH and 2 teenage boys but I give them all quite a bit more than me so it probably works out as about 70g each for them and 40g for me.

To get the right portion. It really isn’t difficult.

Because it only takes a seconds to weight it and its really easy to pour too big a portion out when you just eyeball it.

So that you don’t end up with the wrong amount... I have seen loads of memes about never making the right amount of pasta/rice. Not an issue if you just weigh it out!
HaroldMeeker · 19/01/2022 22:32

I do 150-180g for the 2 of us, and DH gets about two thirds of it, as he does a manual job and I don't.

RestedDevelopment · 19/01/2022 22:32

As much as I’m hungry and more but I bloody love carbs and would happily eat a massive bowl of pasta or spuds with butter alone.

Matt from Food Theory says reheated pasta has less calories and true or not I’m going with it Grin

I’m a stone heavier than I’d like, but still not into overweight, so willing to trade a bigger dress size for heaps of pasta and less facial wrinkles (due to lovely plumping fat in face 🤣)

IncyWincyGrownUp · 19/01/2022 22:35

I buy the huge bags of pasta and decant I to a tub, I use a standard mug to scoop, and use five per meal so that there’s enough for a portion to fling in the fridge.

I used to just lob a 500g pack in at a time, and we were wasting a lot as well as eating too much. The mug is a good addition to my kitchen habits.

DockOTheBay · 19/01/2022 22:38

75g
If I don't weigh it I always end up doing too much and throwing loads away

squishyegg · 19/01/2022 22:38

Who weighs pasta?

PurpleDaisies · 19/01/2022 22:39

@squishyegg

Who weighs pasta?
People who want to eat the right portion.

I can’t understand how so many people are this lacking in imagination.

Fleur405 · 19/01/2022 22:41

80g (or 100 if I’m really hungry).

TyotyaKlava · 19/01/2022 22:43

0 for me and 100 for hubby

canbage · 19/01/2022 22:49

Don't people get used to what their 75g or whatever pasta looks like in a pan though after weighing it for a bit?

canbage · 19/01/2022 22:51

So do people weigh rice, cheese, noodles, potatoes etc?

RampantIvy · 19/01/2022 22:54

Rice, yes of course. I need to measure rice to get the right quantity of water as I cook it using the absorption method.
Noodles no. It comes in portion sizes anyway. Potatoes just by eye. Cheese no.

canbage · 19/01/2022 22:54

I meant that the reason I don’t have to be on a diet is because I weigh my pasta (and other carbs).

You are saying you avoid having to diet because you weigh your carbs? I guess we have different interpretations of diets!

RampantIvy · 19/01/2022 22:57

Yes, I'm baffled that people don't get it either.

No, I use different shaped pasta, so a handful of large penne will weigh less than a handful of orzo. Volume isn't a good guide.

RampantIvy · 19/01/2022 22:58

But that makes perfect sense. I don't diet because I weigh pasta and rice. I don't weigh potatoes, but I rarely eat potatoes.

Yes. I find the easiest way for me to put on weight is to eat massive portions of carbs. I eat totally normally. If I don’t weigh my 80g of pasta. half a mug full of rice/cous cous etc, that easily doubles and I put weight on. I wouldn’t call that a diet.
PurpleDaisies · 19/01/2022 23:01

@canbage

Just pasta/rice/cous cous.

Noodles come in nests. Everything else I can judge by eye from having weighed it previously. Veg don’t matter anyway,

Are you never weigh pasta people so stunned when people follow recipes involving weighing?
