Just wondering what a sensible portion of dry pasta is for a healthy serving?

i think for 4 i do 300 g

TheGriffle · 18/01/2022 20:07

I can never judge pasta, I’m one of those that pour it into a pot and hope for the best!

For spaghetti (most recently it was garlic and kale spag with chicken) I do use a full 500g pack and for 2 adults, an 8yo and a 4yo, that gave us two generous adult portions, 2 kids portions and I got 2 good leftover portions.

RagzReturnedUnwrapped · 18/01/2022 20:08

500g for 5 of us, but sometimes some left over. If not cooking for 5, I do weigh it and use 100g per person.
It's too much, really. Though none for me now as I'm low carbing.
Rice I do 75g

I cooked 350g for 2 adults and 2 kids tonight. Kids have a normal portion each but didn't want to eat as they'd had enough at preschool, I had and decent sized portion and DH had a huge one. It was just with pesto.
We eat regular sized meals but got ott with pasta

purplesequins · 18/01/2022 20:12

we cook 500g for 5 adult size people.
teens will have bigger portions, dh and I a good plate full.
sometimes a small portion leftover.

always served with a vegetable packed sauce.

isittheholidaysyet · 18/01/2022 20:13

Used to live in a shared community with lots of adults.
Was always told 500g bag for 6 people. So 83g per person -ish?)

That's what I do now. 2 adults, 3 teen boys and 10 year old DD.
Finding they sometimes want more than that though, so I sometimes add more, but I think that is just teen boys.

I have no idea if that is a healthy amount?

DuesToTheDirt · 18/01/2022 20:14

Depends on how filling the sauce is. Macaroni cheese gets 70g each, pasta and pesto 100g each.

PurpleDaisies · 18/01/2022 20:16

I cook 160g for dh and me. He gets a bigger portion.

Tee20x · 18/01/2022 20:16

Shocked that people weigh pasta. Surely you just eyeball it & eat enough to fill you up & put any leftovers in the fridge?

Mugful? Scales? Huuuuuh?

PlanetNormal · 18/01/2022 20:16

People actually weigh their pasta portions? 😲

That just lead to us overeating. People are often crap at judging what’s a healthy portion of carbs. Weighing takes seconds. I think it’s a great habit to get into.
ShockWavezz · 18/01/2022 20:19

Sad to say, I literally weigh everything. I will overeat otherwise.

75g just because it says on the packet

tallullabluebella · 18/01/2022 20:19

anything between 50g and 100g each for me and DH. depends on what we are having with it and how hungry we are

Hogwarts4Christmas · 18/01/2022 20:22

Apparently, 60g is a small portion, 75g medium/average and 90g is a large portion according to my old weight watcher books. I'm sure it gives 75g as a portion on most packets of pasta though which is what I'd generally use for most people. 50g for myself and upto 90g for those with a larger appetite.
If you have a spagetti spoon with a hole in the middle the right amount of spaghetti for 1 portion fits into it which is a quick way to measure it if you don't want to faff about with scales. Photo of tool I mean is attached. From memory I believe it measures out around 75-80g.

How many grams of pasta do you have per serving?
SlyAvocado · 18/01/2022 20:23

One. One single penne or fusili, although if I’m doing macaroni I’ll have two. Spaghetti perhaps three strands?

Anymore and it’s a carb overload and I’ll bloat up from the carbs like a pufferfish and be a size 47. I put on a stone once simply by walking past an Italian restaurant and forgetting to hold my breath.

TooMuchSugar22 · 18/01/2022 20:25

Far too much.. I do a whole bag for me, dh, teen and 2 under 4s.
DH and teen do have huge portions and not overweight, but often we throw some away '

PurpleDaisies · 18/01/2022 20:25

@GirlOfTudor

If you're weighing pasta, you have FAR too much time on your hands.
How much time do you think it takes to weigh pasta? Confused
Greenrubber · 18/01/2022 20:31

I love pasta

gogohm · 18/01/2022 20:32

I do 1/3 pack for 2 so 85g I guess

RampantIvy · 18/01/2022 20:39

What a silly comment. I have always weighed pasta out. I do 60gm each for DH and me. He can't eat big meals, and I can't afford to put on more weight.

I measure rice as well.

ShockWavezz · 18/01/2022 20:41

If you're not weighing pasta to eat as an individual, you're obviously eating too much pasta.. Aimed at that particular poster.

Four handfuls (I have small hands) per person. I have no clue how much that is in grams but now I am tempted to go and weigh four handfuls.

Rainbowbrite2022 · 18/01/2022 20:48

@Inextremis

Flip knows - do you lot really weigh your pasta? I just shove a handful into the pot!
Same! I have minimal pasta anyway. Just a couple of handfuls added. Fill up with the meat/veggies etc
PieonaBarm · 18/01/2022 20:59

As much as I can fit in my face without being sick
