How Often Do You Go Out For Sunday Roast?

I can’t remember the last time yet I love going out for a carvery. Great for someone else to do all the work! There’s a pub near where my brother in law lives in Nottingham which does a fantastic carvery. I have never seen so many vegetable dishes! Our local Premier Inn’s roast is supposed to be good. Beef, turkey or gammon for £8.99 & you can have bottomless Yorkshires, roast potatoes & gravy too.

@Crunchymum

I do like to go out for a steak though. We have an award winning Argentinian restaurant near where we live. It has never disappointed. We go a few times a year (more often pre kids and ore Covid) and we always take non local meat eating friends.
See, I'd never go out to a restaurant for 'grill meats', because it's quick, easy, zero effort, zero skill cook at home food to me.

You can make the same at home in no time and steak is really expensive in restaurants.

Echobelly · 16/01/2022 12:01

Two or three times a year.... this thread makes me want to go for one next Sunday when hopefully DS and I will be out of 'COVID jail'

Ninkanink · 16/01/2022 12:01

@lololololollll

Funny no one on here goes for a roast but o reckon every pub in my area )and most) is fully booked for roasts every sun. Wonder who's going
It’s really not all that difficult to figure out...the people posting here are not the people going. It’s not like there’s only 200 people in all of the country, is it.

I don’t go to McDonalds often either (maybe once every year or two, on average), nor do we routinely get takeaways. That doesn’t mean there aren’t a great deal of people who have either of those a few times a week, or weekly, or monthly, or whatever.

They are already out for lunch and not on mumsnet Grin

Chain carveries are generally busy from noon until late evening 7 days a week, but obviously not with Mumsnetters.
AwaitingSueGraysInvestigation · 16/01/2022 12:03

Rarely — once a year, maybe less. At the moment the last time we ate a roast out was Christmas 2019. 😱

I don’t know why, I enjoy a roast dinner/lunch. It’s just not something we ever think to do.

PattyPan · 16/01/2022 12:04

I don’t think I have ever been to a carvery. I think the only times I’ve been out for Sunday lunch have been for Mother’s Day but I wouldn’t necessarily have had a roast for those.

MrsPnut · 16/01/2022 12:04

We love going out to one of a few local pubs for Sunday lunch, my criteria is that it has to be as good as I can cook at home.

We did get takeaway Sunday lunch from one of them last year during lockdown which was also really good.

It is though quite a rare treat because we are usually at rugby during the winter and somehow I don't fancy having a roast in the summer.
Day off today though so I have a chicken in the oven along with potatoes and parsnips. Yorkshire pudding batter resting and stuffing ready to go into the oven.

TheChosenTwo · 16/01/2022 12:07

Last time we went for a Sunday roast with our friends we split the bill down the middle and paid about £180 each. Our half was 4 roasts, one steak and chips, 2 starters and 3 puddings, some alcohol and soft drinks. We thought it was quite reasonable for the quality!
But definitely NOT as nice as our home roasts Grin Only one Yorkshire pudding whereas we make 12 at home and just eat them all up, meat was good but dh would have had more at home, roast potatoes always disappointing so no expectations there, the flavour was good but it’s just all not quite right. However, no gravy granules. The gravy was made properly with meat juices and wine. That’s important.

Taytocrisps · 16/01/2022 12:07

A few times a year. There's a pub near my Dad that does a really good carvery so he treats me sometimes - I'd happily pay for my own but he insists Smile. Dad much prefers a nice roast dinner to fancy restaurant food and since he lives on his own, it's not worth his while cooking a large joint of meat. It's around €15 but you can order a half-portion which is ideal for children or pensioners who may have smaller appetites/budgets. The food is very good and it's always busy at weekends.

JuergenSchwarzwald · 16/01/2022 12:09

I Never Go Out For a Sunday Roast Because I Can Cook A Better One Myself.

(what's with the US style headline, by the way?)

runningfromtheoutlaws · 16/01/2022 12:10

Never because prefer our roast at home

A580Hojas · 16/01/2022 12:10

Never. I can make a veey nice roast dinner at home, find it very easy. When we go out it's to have food that we would rarely or never cook for ourselves.

Ninkanink · 16/01/2022 12:13

Speaking of Sunday roasts, I’m doing pork belly today which I was originally going to serve with garlicky, herby butter beans. But now I really fancy a proper roast so I think I’m going to have to make roast potatoes and the trimmings too! Hmmm...we’re down to our last few potatoes and we can’t get more until Saturday so I’ll have to do without for meals this coming week...decisions, decisions.

Maybe we should go out instead! Grin

TheCatShatInTheHat · 16/01/2022 12:20

We eat out loads but don't often go to a carvery.

I'm now very hungry, so booked into a local pub for some lunch !

lololololollll · 16/01/2022 12:23

@Ninkanink not sure there's any need for such an attitude. Have a lovely day

MrsDThomas · 16/01/2022 12:25

Never. Too expensive, i can make a bloody decent roast dinner myself.

Ninkanink · 16/01/2022 12:28

@lololololollll

There was a thinly veiled implication that people here are lying, which was annoying. I don’t think there was any need for that either, tbh...

But of course I will have a lovely day and I hope you do too!

GiltEdges · 16/01/2022 12:29

Never. A roast is the one meal I feel like a restaurant can't make better than I can make it at home, at least in terms of it being to our preferences.

Haha there was no implication of that at all. I was simply a lovely chat with a few people and generally musing as to how Mumsnetters don't like roasts but so many do. Actually an observation. Try not to he so negative

Fairyliz · 16/01/2022 12:40

Never. I cook a roast most Sundays and if I say it myself it’s brilliant Smile.
I never understand people who say it’s hard. Yes the meat can take a long time to cook, but you can leave it and get on with something else.
If I cook DH has to wash up, which is surely the hard bit?

freshcarnation · 16/01/2022 12:42

Once a year. I love it, but my family prefer home cooked (me)

eagerlywaitingfor · 16/01/2022 12:45

Pre-Covid we would probably have gone out for a Sunday roast about every 3 months or so. Now we are probably down to annual. Both of those were at our local pub within walking distance, but it has since closed. Sad

Crinkle77 · 16/01/2022 12:47

Hardly ever cos I'm always slightly disappointed as I think what I can do at home is nicer.

longtompot · 16/01/2022 12:48

Only a few times in my life and never had a good one sadly. Normally the roast potatoes are still a bit raw and not crispy on the outside. The meats have been tough and it's all been a bit cold. Not what I was hoping for sadly. I'd love to find somewhere that does a good roast as it would be nice to have one and not worry about all the clearing up afterwards.
