How Often Do You Go Out For Sunday Roast?

I can’t remember the last time yet I love going out for a carvery. Great for someone else to do all the work! There’s a pub near where my brother in law lives in Nottingham which does a fantastic carvery. I have never seen so many vegetable dishes! Our local Premier Inn’s roast is supposed to be good. Beef, turkey or gammon for £8.99 & you can have bottomless Yorkshires, roast potatoes & gravy too.

Hardly ever, but we did have one a week ago, because we happened to be out for other purposes, wanted lunch, it happened to be Sunday, and the pub had roasts on the menu.

I make one at home probably every couple of weeks though. Home roast is always better - mine is anyway! - and I agree with a pp about cauliflower cheese - cauliflower over cooked and/or not drained properly, so it makes the sauce watery, plus never enough cheese in the sauce. It needs a good dollop of English mustard, too.

We don't. A roast is easy to cook, plus the leftovers will provide food for at least the following day - going out to eat a roast is a waste of money you might spend on going out to eat something that would be difficult to replicate at home.

Also, if it's a carvery, I don't like them - I like my food served to me in a restaurant, it's part of the 'experience'. & you are paying for things you might not want - like dozens of not-very-nice Yorkshire puddings they provide in the hope you'll fill up on them instead of more expensive meat.

@onlychildhamster I was going to say the Hawksmoor do a pretty good roast and I see just above you someone else has also recommended it.

@TheChosenTwo thank you will check it out!

CornishTiger · 16/01/2022 09:18

Funnily I woke up today wanting to go out for roast. It’s been ages. We used to do a swim and roast which was great value. They are closed March though.

We can’t really afford to all go as a family normally. It’ll easily be £50-60 plus drinks etc. Easier to do it at home.

Keladrythesaviour · 16/01/2022 09:19

Probably once every 6 months. Only good quality restaurants that track their meat though. I hate this concept of super cheap food - I prefer to know the animal has been well reared and the farner paid a decent price. If your paying sub £10 for a final product (that has to pay for every part in the supply chain) then that definitely isn't the case.
Cooking at home at least I can source my meat appropriately.

I'd recommend English Pastoral by James Rebanks if you're interested or unconvinced.

*farmer and you're arghh

Ninkanink · 16/01/2022 09:20

I’d love to go out for a great roast that was reasonably priced! But anywhere that’s good is just too expensive for what it is, IMO. We hardly ever go out as it is and when we do we like to eat things we wouldn’t have at home.

ConstanceL · 16/01/2022 09:21

Very rarely, and usually if we have met friends for a hike. I’d rather spend the money on a really nice rib of beef or something like that that I can make at home and have lots of leftovers :)

CornishTiger · 16/01/2022 09:23

@Forshorttheycallmecomp

On holiday in Cornwall, as there’s a pub on Maughan Pawth beach that does a fabulous carvery.

But haven’t been there for years. For a little while it was an annual event ;)

@CurryLover55 probably Merrymoor Inn.
Dontgetyerknicksinatwist · 16/01/2022 09:24

We go to a local farm shop that does a lovely roasts. However the last time we went it was around £80. DH and I had hot chocolate drinks and the children had juice cartons. I had a coffee and I think they had deserts (basic ice cream,). The children had the childrens menu. This was Sunday lunch for 2 adults and 2 children in a rural area. We don’t live near London. I think this was expensive and we won’t be going again.

Justkeeppedaling · 16/01/2022 09:24

Never!!

tigerbear · 16/01/2022 09:26

Very rarely. Almost always a let down.
DH makes the most amazing roast ever, so anything else is awful in comparison.

RampantIvy · 16/01/2022 09:27

@Jsgdud

Literally a handful of times ever and not for years! It's one of those meals I'd never usually pick from a menu as find it a bit boring and a waste of money if eating out I'd rather get something different. I do cook one most Sundays though if we are all in.
Same here. Also, why would I pay for something I can make a better job of at home? The vegetables at a carvery are always overcooked and have been sitting around too long, and Sunday lunchtimes are just too busy for us.

I just can't get excited about going out for a roast dinner. I would rather eat something I can't make at home or something I can't easily source ingredients for.

dementedma · 16/01/2022 09:28

Never

inappropriateraspberry · 16/01/2022 09:29

I also hate that there are usually a few sitting G's and there is a time limit on your table. No chance of sitting afterwards with a drink and relaxing.

CurryLover55 · 16/01/2022 09:29

Divebar21 had loads of glowing reviews so reckon it’s pretty good. When I’ve tried it for myself, I’ll report back!

I never choose a roast if we happen to be in a pub for lunch on a Sunday, as I am really fussy about meat and hate it when it’s at all fatty. I also get irrationally annoyed that they don’t cook vegetables in the exact way that I would 🤣 DH does an amazing roast most weekends when he’s not at work, for about £15 for all three of us, rather than £15/£20 each in the pub and the food is so much better. I then tidy up and sort pudding whilst he takes DS and the dog for a walk.

WeaversDivas · 16/01/2022 09:29

Never now. I was always disappointed and prefer to make it myself. It is a Sunday ritual and I love it.

MyQuietPlace · 16/01/2022 09:30

We go out once a month. I love eating out. I live in Nottingham and can hazard a guess about the place you mean.

itssquidstella · 16/01/2022 09:30

At least once a month. It's a great way to catch up with friends. We're in London so spoiled for gastropubs which do a great roast.

hivemindneeded · 16/01/2022 09:31

Almost never. But I love a good roast at home.

DearZoom · 16/01/2022 09:32

Fairly often. We go to a local pub that does a good carvery. Whilst it’s not the best I’ve had, it’s a nice meal out and I like supporting local businesses - especially in the current climate. My Dd is a very fussy eater and a carvery works well for her as she can pick the bits she wants (and get them ‘not touching’ which is very important).
I’ve had some amazing roasts in pubs and some that are underwhelming. I’m a trained chef and can make a very good roast myself, I don’t make one very often.

FindingMeno · 16/01/2022 09:32

Once a year maybe, if that.
