How Often Do You Go Out For Sunday Roast?

I can’t remember the last time yet I love going out for a carvery. Great for someone else to do all the work! There’s a pub near where my brother in law lives in Nottingham which does a fantastic carvery. I have never seen so many vegetable dishes! Our local Premier Inn’s roast is supposed to be good. Beef, turkey or gammon for £8.99 & you can have bottomless Yorkshires, roast potatoes & gravy too.

Rarely, but not never and always if we've just been out and about for the day and I can't be bothered or have the time to cook. I tend to compare the price with what I could've done at home. I never do that with other forms of eating out.

Oldraver · 16/01/2022 11:07

I've probably only been for a couple in the lady 20 years at my folks insistence.

It's way too early to be eating a main meal for us. The last two I've been too in the last year and they were unremarkably. One was place that does decent food but think the roast just banged out with no care

Floralnomad · 16/01/2022 11:12

I have never been to somewhere where you pay for a roast . I really fail to see the point as it’s such an easy meal to do at home .

I don't go out for a roast or steak. At the risk of sounding like a complete wanker I can do it better myself at home. I eat lots of other things out though.

Crunchymum · 16/01/2022 11:17

I can honestly count on one hand the amount of times I've been out for a roast.

As much as I love them, they are just a "home" meal for me. I can't really explain.

It doesn't help that the ones I have had, have been mediocre. And they've all been at popular expensive gastropubs who generally do 'good' food.

I can only recall going to a carvery once when I was about 15. Didn't think much of it but wasn't much if a foodie at 15.

emuloc · 16/01/2022 11:19

Never. I do not see the point of paying money for something I can cook for myself, exactly as I like.

Crunchymum · 16/01/2022 11:20

I do like to go out for a steak though. We have an award winning Argentinian restaurant near where we live. It has never disappointed. We go a few times a year (more often pre kids and ore Covid) and we always take non local meat eating friends.

BobBobbity · 16/01/2022 11:22

Another one in the ‘it’s better at home’ camp. I would never normally choose to eat a roast out, and am disappointed if we end up somewhere (eg meeting friends etc) where they’re only serving roasts. I’m not a mad fan of roasts anyway, I probably make one at home every couple of months.

The only roast I have ever had that was worth it was Hawksmoor, as PP have also recommended.

Comedycook · 16/01/2022 11:22

Never. I can make it much nicer myself and for far less money. There's a pub down my road that does food. We had a Sunday roast there years ago. Cost about £100 for four of us...and it was cold. I can do us a great roast at home for a tenner.

reluctantbrit · 16/01/2022 11:26

Years ago and never again. I love a roast but I haven't seen any being prepared or plated in a way that it didn't look disgusting. Often too bland, bit cold as kept too long out under heat lamps and also dry.

For me cooking a roast is not a lot of work so I do it at home and when we go out we go somewhere which offers nice food for the price they charge.

RampantIvy · 16/01/2022 11:26

No need to explain. I think you have summed it up pretty well. I wouldn't pay to go out and eat a macaroni cheese for example or tortellini in tomato sauce. I would pay for a good Thai curry. Although I can make them at home they are never as good as the ones at our local Thai restaurant.

Oldraver · 16/01/2022 11:27

Crikey at some if the prices for a roast. My local charges £18 for beef and £20 for lamb

cloverleafy · 16/01/2022 11:28

Almost never, unless away. We can invariably do it better (and cheaper) at home. If we're going out to eat, I'd rather have something different.

Agree. I refuse to pay for pasta or roasts in restaurants as I make both much better at home.

Funny no one on here goes for a roast but o reckon every pub in my area )and most) is fully booked for roasts every sun. Wonder who's going

CurryLover55 · 16/01/2022 11:49

Ooh roast lamb - haven’t had that for ages. DH isn’t a big fan as lamb can be fatty but he will eat Asda lamb rump steaks with garlic & rosemary. £4 for 2 & really good!

I don’t think I’ve ever been to a carvery, or gone out for a roast lunch. If I was eating out, I’d want something I couldn’t easily make at home.

lollipoprainbow · 16/01/2022 11:54

@lololololollll I'm surprised at the number of people saying they don't go for Sunday roasts tbh.

Our local pub...in suburban London changes just under £20 for a roast...so that's already £80 for a family of four. Add on soft drinks for me and DC. Dh would have one beer. Kids would want a dessert. And we're easily over £100. Just ridiculous

CurryLover55 · 16/01/2022 11:57

MsMiaWallace & StPaulandTheBrokenBones it’s The Rancliffe Arms. Honestly I would happily just have the vegetables as they are wonderful. There must be a dozen veg dishes easily, not including the spuds.

I'd happily go out for a roast. But the kids aren't keen and I don't want to spend a fortune feeding them Yorkshire puddings. Also it's always too busy and noisy for them to enjoy it. I

They are already out for lunch and not on mumsnet Grin

lololololollll · 16/01/2022 12:00

Yeah I guess it is a lot. But we're in a nice ish part of London and it's around 14-18 for a really nice roast. Guess it's luck if it's nice. I just love it, being waited on and especially in the winter by the fire with nice red wine, everyone in a nice mood. Love it.

CurryLover55 · 16/01/2022 12:00

Just checked the menu & they don’t do as many veg now - still sounds delicious though.
