How Often Do You Go Out For Sunday Roast?

I can’t remember the last time yet I love going out for a carvery. Great for someone else to do all the work! There’s a pub near where my brother in law lives in Nottingham which does a fantastic carvery. I have never seen so many vegetable dishes! Our local Premier Inn’s roast is supposed to be good. Beef, turkey or gammon for £8.99 & you can have bottomless Yorkshires, roast potatoes & gravy too.

Ah I love a carvery! Had one last weekend with my brother and his family, from their local pub. It was delicious but doesn’t quite top our local pub Wink we used to go probably 2-3 times a month but covid fucked everything up and haven’t got back into it yet!

MsMiaWallace · 16/01/2022 10:00

@CurryLover55 which place is it in Notts?
I live that way so might visit!

liveforsummer · 16/01/2022 10:01

@IKeptYouLikeAnOath

Never! It's not really a thing in Scotland.

I wouldn't order a roast in a restaurant anyway. I find it the most boring meal.

Huh? There are tons of carvery restaurants and places that serve a roast here. I've got several in walking distance. What do you mean it's not a thing in Scotland? 😆

A few times a year - either local pub or the Toby. I actually find the meat at the Toby really good but veg variable - but like the fact I can pile up loads of different veg. My yorkshires taste good but are tiny compared to theirs. With the pub, it’s all good but less variety and you can’t mix up the roast or know in advance whether eg the meat is rare enough. As well as the obvious that it’s great for someone else to cook, it means I can have beef or lamb as rest of family only like roast chicken or pork and things like cauliflower cheese which they don’t like and aren’t worth making for one. So definitely a treat for me.

PinkTonic · 16/01/2022 10:07

I wouldn’t go to a carvery but there are a couple of good pubs round here that do an excellent roast so if we went out on a Sunday I’d probably have it even though in truth it’s not as good as home made.

liveforsummer · 16/01/2022 10:10

The pub attached to our local premier inn is actually really good value. The chefs aren't trained carvery chefs so instead of the wafer thin meat they cut you at the likes of Toby they give you huge wedges of meat. It's always decent and never fatty, always a good selection of veg and things like cauli cheese and red cabbage. They give dc extra Yorkshire's when they ask too. Not too shabby when we can all eat for about £15

StPaulandTheBrokenBones · 16/01/2022 10:14

Hi Op, can I ask the name of the name of the pub in Nottingham please? I love a good carvery and I would love to know where this is as I am local to Nottingham.

Babdoc · 16/01/2022 10:16

DD2 persuaded me to try a Toby carvery in Edinburgh once. I was reluctant as Edinburgh has endless fab restaurants, so why have a dull meal one can make far better at home.
My reluctance was justified! The gravy was congealing in the jug and reminded me of glutinous childhood Bisto rather than made with proper stock and roast dripping.
The vegetables were vile - they all had the texture of frozen and reheated ones, and were largely tasteless. The peas were like bullets. The meat was average.
DD1 had a vegetarian option, which frankly looked a better bet!

A pub near me does a lovely Sunday roast which we usually have around once per month.
The downside is, because it's a pub we're usually still there at closing time.
Fortunately my dogs know the way home.

Oblomov22 · 16/01/2022 10:24

Never. Why spend £100 on something that isn't as good as you can create at home?

onedayoranother · 16/01/2022 10:30

Never. I mean, I have a few times in my life, but not for years now (nothing to do with pandemic). Don't really do roast on Sundays as it's just me and my dd at home now.

Queenoftheashes · 16/01/2022 10:30

@onlychildhamster yes hawksmoor is excellent (save room for sticky toffee pudding which is divine) and has several locations but if you are near Clapham, Knife is good, blacklock is also excellent. Jones and son apparently good but I haven’t been yet - going next weekend though.

maddiemookins16mum · 16/01/2022 10:31

Never. I can cook a fab one and love a Sunday morning prepping in the kitchen with coffee and the radio on. I actually look forward to it, the smell of a roast wafting through.

Who said anything about £100. We can all eat at our local one for under £20 (less if you go not on a Sunday). Worth it just for the fact I then don't have to cook or wash up after and I would never make as many side options
inappropriateraspberry · 16/01/2022 10:34

A family eats for under £20? Doesn't sound like great quality to be honest - or you've got a hidden gem!

RedHot22 · 16/01/2022 10:34

Never

lollipoprainbow · 16/01/2022 10:35

Me and my dd 9 go once a month, as it's just me and her it's not worth doing one at home. We have a lovely local pub where we feel comfortable and they do epic roasts!

liveforsummer · 16/01/2022 10:36

It's not a hidden gem it's just the local premier inn pub. Meat is usually nice - never fatty you can have turkey neef and gammon. They have lots of sides. Not gourmet by any means but fills you up and saves the washing up.
liveforsummer · 16/01/2022 10:36

Neef? Beef obviously 😆

WorraLiberty · 16/01/2022 10:38

We've got an absolutely lovely carvery not too far from us, but we rarely go there because honestly, my DH's roasts are the best I've ever had and he cooks one every Sunday.

Mammyloveswine · 16/01/2022 10:39

I love going out for sunday lunch! I live in the north east though and all the cheapy italians do lovely sunday roasts for around £8 including a starter and either coffee or ice cream after!

inappropriateraspberry · 16/01/2022 10:40

@liveforsummer are you meaning £20 each or £20 for everyone? I can't imagine even a Premier Inn could do it that cheap?

liveforsummer · 16/01/2022 10:41

Yes it's about £8.50 for an adult and about a fiver for kids. It's me and 2dc

Ivalueloyaltyaboveallelse · 16/01/2022 10:41

Very rarely, we either cook at home or go to family or friends for a roast. Today we’re off to my parents for a lamb roast.

Reallycantbesarsed · 16/01/2022 10:45

I do occasionally but the gravy is never as good as mine!!
