Anyone tried the McDonald's McPlant?

Interested in anyone's views before I try at the weekend! I am a big fan of fake-meat burgers (the only category of fake meat I think is indistinguishable from/superior to the original) and usually have Linda McCartney's or Co-Ops own brand, so looking forward to trying this!

On a side note, anyone have a good fake-meat sausage recommendations? None I've tried have hit the mark.

Thanks!

I had one today and loved it. I would like it if it was a bit bigger and firmer like the Big Mac size but it is very nice and much nicer than some of the awful vegan burgers in the supermarket.

Magnited · 11/01/2022 20:07

I think you're the one missing my point. Vegans are perfectly well aware there is no harm-free diet or ethical position; you aren't breaking that news to us!

I am breaking that new to some of you - I really am. That is my point. You might be OK compared to other vegans, but you are in a minority.

And your minority will become a greater minority (ie smaller) if we believe the rhetoric from McDonalds, M&S, Starbucks....etc.

I feel like I’m being meat-splained at.

I’m grateful @BIWI
I agree, plant based doesn’t equal healthier without research.

I choose not to eat somewhere that is known for meat and grease.

@Magnited ...really, no.

Vegans have different views about plant-based capitalism such as the McPlant. We are not a monolith. If you are interested in reading the positions of vegans who are opposed to PBC, you should check out r/veganforcirclejerkers on Reddit (despite the name, it is a real discussion site). Many, many vegans are staunchly opposed to PBC, while others support it for a variety of reasons.

Nonetheless, everyone following a vegan diet saves animal lives - even if you think their reasons are inadequate.

PurpleDaisies · 11/01/2022 20:16

Who goes to McDonald’s and thinks it’s healthy? Absolutely nobody. Ffs it’s ridiculous to pretend anyone thinks this is a heathy alternative.

Innocenta · 11/01/2022 20:17

@TabithaTittlemouse Vegetarians live on average 7 years longer than people who consume animal products, and vegans 15 years. What health measure are you referring to?

Magnited · 11/01/2022 20:17

Exactly. Animals have been harmed in McPlant production.
PurpleDaisies · 11/01/2022 20:19

Exactly. Animals have been harmed in McPlant production.
How did you reach that conclusion from what I wrote? Your statement does not automatically follow from mine.

Innocenta · 11/01/2022 20:19

@Magnited It is unequivocally untrue to claim more animals are harmed in producing plant-based food.

I suggest that you inform yourself more about this topic if you want to discuss it. A kind interpretation is that you are merely misinformed...

Magnited · 11/01/2022 20:20

@Innocenta I am not saying they are inadequate. I am saying vegans choices lead to animal deaths. Less so than omnivores, given.

An uncomfortable truth.

Not all vegans. It is about where and how the food is grown, not the type.

Then your point is incoherent.

Absolutely all food production leads to animal suffering. Only self denial to such a degree of asceticism as to be commensurate with mental illness would truly avoid participating in such suffering ... and this is not veganism. So you are not commenting on veganism or vegans at all. You are writing at cross purposes, because veganism as a movement has never denied the continuance of animal suffering.

SmellyOldOwls · 11/01/2022 20:24

'Why anyone would want to eat such horribly ultra-processed food is beyond me.'

Because it is delicious Grin

marthamydear · 11/01/2022 20:24

I had a McPlant on Friday evening. I thought it tasted nice enough and would have bought it again, until I had the familiar feeling of pain in stomach where I couldn't digest the ingredients. (Around 10 minutes after eating it).

I have exactly the same issue with Quorn. It hurts to digest and I find it really painful.

I think it's pea protein that is in McPlant burger and all Quorn dishes. I have to stay away from.

Richmond meat free sausages are good and so are Linda McCartney's range. Easy to digest without any pain.

I had Plant Pioneer meat free Chicken Tikka Masala and it is delicious and it didn't cause pain digesting it.

It's so difficult to become Vegan from Vegetarian, because I can't tolerate pulses, grains or beans or certain proteins.

Loving Oat Milk now I am used to it.

Magnited · 11/01/2022 20:25

I do not say more animals are harmed - only that it is wrong to say vegan food is harmless to animals. Take sesame seeds and avocados.

Take down vegetation to grow cash crops in Madagascar to grow exotic food to give greater dietary choices to people in Maldon, Manchester or Marylebone.

Goodness - virgin forest habitats replaced with cash crops and pesticides. Can you see the irony in that?

Innocenta · 11/01/2022 20:25

If you want to read discourse by vegans who don't support PBC - I think that's a perfectly valid interest, as it's an underrepresented perspective, and people are often too polite (rightly, I think!) to articulate that position in a thread about a specific product (...something that can't be said for certain Omnis...). But I've pointed you towards one of the most active forums where you can read people discussing things from exactly that perspective, including the McPlant and other recent new products.

Gettingahead · 11/01/2022 20:25

I'm conscious that this may just start another argument but I'm genuinely curious... So here goes..

I'm just wondering how vegans/veggies for animal cruelty or environmental reasons reconcile that with eating in places like McDonald's, KFC etc whose entire business is based on killing animals as cheaply as possible. It's not as though if they sell enough mcplants that they'll ditch the big macs.

For the record, I'm the most hypocritical of them all as I eat meat even though I know it's not right. I am taking steps to reduce it though...

If people buy fewer meat products, McDonald’s will sell more veggie stuff and less meat. Making it easier and tastier for people to buy non meat options will mean many people choosing less meat every week.

You know I am not talking about 'movements'. I am responding to posters on this thread. Am I not?

Innocenta · 11/01/2022 20:30

@Gettingahead People have super different views, is the boring but true answer. Personally, I was raised vegetarian and am grossed out by meat, so I don't eat any fake meats at all - but I'm generally glad they exist for other people. I think making it easy to be (and stay) vegan is a good thing. Younger people, for instance, may hate feeling like the weird one or the odd one out.

Here's a recent discussion on the McPlant:

https://www.reddit.com/r/veganuk/comments/ry9l3t/mcplantissamazing10100recommendeditsssogood/?utmmsource=share&utmmedium=iossapp&utmname=iossmf

I know it's Reddit - but it's UK vegans discussing it, range of opinions, etc.

Innocenta · 11/01/2022 20:30

@Magnited Posters here who are vegan, are part of the vegan movement.

PurpleDaisies · 11/01/2022 20:30

Well, your response to me had nothing to do with what I wrote so that’s debatable.

HereticFanjo · 11/01/2022 20:31

Richmond veggie sausages are lovely!

Innocenta · 11/01/2022 20:32

(Also - @Gettingahead - I know some vegans are snooty about reducing gradually, but I personally really respect your honesty, curiosity and willingness to explore making some changes. Smile)

Magnited · 11/01/2022 20:34

But I've pointed you towards......

You have nothing to give me!

I eat meat about three times a month, mostly when I cook it for others. I grow my own food and trade most with others. It is hard work, but I restrict my dietary choices to food that is in season, bottle it, pickle it and ensure most of it is produced from the sun that shines where I live. I have no passport and do not fly food into my home.
