Anyone tried the McDonald's McPlant?

Legodout · 11/01/2022 16:14

Interested in anyone's views before I try at the weekend! I am a big fan of fake-meat burgers (the only category of fake meat I think is indistinguishable from/superior to the original) and usually have Linda McCartney's or Co-Ops own brand, so looking forward to trying this!

On a side note, anyone have a good fake-meat sausage recommendations? None I've tried have hit the mark.

Thanks!

I'm genuinely astonished that some people thought any fast food would be unprocessed and healthy.

I'm vegan but I'm also fat and unhealthy. I went vegan because the idea of an animal directly suffering for my benefit is not something I'm comfortable with. And yes I know that not all plant based food is perfect before the omnivores dive in to point out how insects die during crop production etc...I know this but unfortunately can't live on air or dirt alone so have to eat something.

I don't think I'm better than anyone else, it's a personal choice I've made and I don't really understand why it bothers anyone else.

Innocenta · 11/01/2022 20:36

@Magnited

But I've pointed you towards......

You have nothing to give me!

I eat meat about three times a month, mostly when I cook it for others. I grow my own food and trade most with others. It is hard work, but I restrict my dietary choices to food that is in season, bottle it, pickle it and ensure most of it is produced from the sun that shines where I live. I have no passport and do not fly food into my home.

You appeared interested in vegans' attitudes towards plant-based capitalism, but I see from this reply that in fact you just want to reiterate your own perceived superiority.

I would still encourage you to watch Dominion. No one ever lost by opening their mind!

Isn't it funny how omnivores aren't crying about the poor insects that die during crop production when those crops are being fed to animals...? As vast amounts of such crops are!

@Magnited

I think you're the one missing my point. Vegans are perfectly well aware there is no harm-free diet or ethical position; you aren't breaking that news to us!

I am breaking that new to some of you - I really am. That is my point. You might be OK compared to other vegans, but you are in a minority.

And your minority will become a greater minority (ie smaller) if we believe the rhetoric from McDonalds, M&S, Starbucks....etc.

Let me guess, you met one evangelical vegan once?
TabithaTittlemouse · 11/01/2022 20:39

@Innocenta I’m well aware thanks! I’m referring to people who use the vegan ‘label’ to eat crap each day but think it’s healthier because it isn’t meat.

Innocenta · 11/01/2022 20:40

Sorry, @TabithaTittlemouse Thanks

MyGhastIsFlabbered · 11/01/2022 20:42

@Magnited

I do not say more animals are harmed - only that it is wrong to say vegan food is harmless to animals. Take sesame seeds and avocados.

Take down vegetation to grow cash crops in Madagascar to grow exotic food to give greater dietary choices to people in Maldon, Manchester or Marylebone.

Goodness - virgin forest habitats replaced with cash crops and pesticides. Can you see the irony in that?

You do know that a lot of deforestation takes place to grow crops TO FEED CATTLE etc? Don't you? Vegans are not solely the cause of all the world's problems despite what some people think.

We don't claim to never harm animals. I take medication which I know has been tested on animals etc but without it I'd die. Does that make me a hypocrite or just an average person doing my best?

Yet again I would like to thank the vegan bashers for educating me on the lack of allergens in the McPlant. Going to see Mil next year will be so much less hassle.

Viva la flexitarians

TabithaTittlemouse · 11/01/2022 20:44

@Innocenta don’t apologise, I have a lifetime of explaining my diet and ‘why can’t you just grab a veggie burger’ Wink
my son answered it beautifully when he was around 7 when he said, ‘it’s made of playdoh’ so now that’s my answer!

Magnited · 11/01/2022 20:46

Yes @MyGhastIsFlabbered I do know. Wink

Yes you are a hypocrite AND an average person doing your best.

mumwon · 11/01/2022 20:47

Yes you are a hypocrite AND an average person doing your best.

That’s why the hypocrite argument is so boring. Everyone is hypocrite.
rainbowdancegirl · 11/01/2022 21:08

Also the KFC vegan burger is bloody amazing!! 😋

HoldingTheDoor · 11/01/2022 21:12

What's the problem with sesame seeds? I can find very little about them being particularly bad for the environment.

MyGhastIsFlabbered · 11/01/2022 21:13

Explain why I'm a hypocrite please?
Postdatedpandemic · 11/01/2022 21:16

OMG the KFC vegan burger is also soy free.

Thank you EU for asking that the common allergens are removed if possible. And yeah, the UK still follows EU rules because there are so many multinational companies.

Postdatedpandemic · 11/01/2022 21:18

@mumwon DD is celiac and used to work at Subway. She wouldn't eat there as the contamination was high. So be careful.

Lanique · 11/01/2022 21:25

Love the McPlant - I think it'll be my burger of choice from now on despite not being vegetarian.

TabithaTittlemouse · 11/01/2022 21:25

@mumwon I’m gluten free as well and asked about cross contamination and the server was pretty clueless. The fact that they dribble meat and cheese over the other options puts me off too.

Icenii · 11/01/2022 21:34

Who knew a veggie burger could cause so much animosity from meat eaters. Poor OP was only asking for opinions on what it was like. When I feel my life is a bit boring I'm going to start one.

It's pathetic. Can you imagine the uproar if a vegan or vegetarian started on a thread about the best way to cook your roast on a Sunday?!

Post asking people how often they wash their towels and really set the cat along the pigeons Wink
Whydoyoucareaboutthis · 11/01/2022 21:48

Just FYI on the avocado bit. You can eat avocados grown in the UK. They still consume a lot of water but they don't have airmiles, but are expensive.

Agree about the KFC burger although v annoying they often run out and that you can't have chips. (Although if you are ethical veggie I don't think you can eat at KFC)

kikisparks · 11/01/2022 21:49

@Magnited local non vegan diet is still worse than a plant based diet with imports:

pubs.acs.org/doi/full/10.1021/es702969f

“buying local” could achieve, at maximum, around a 4−5% reduction in GHG emissions due to large sources of both CO2 and non-CO2 emissions in the production of food. Shifting less than 1 day per week’s (i.e., 1/7 of total calories) consumption of red meat and/or dairy to other protein sources or a vegetable-based diet could have the same climate impact as buying all household food from local providers.”

www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2018/10/181023110627.htm

“A new study provides a more comprehensive accounting of the greenhouse gas emissions from EU diets. It shows that meat and dairy products are responsible for the lion's share of greenhouse emissions from the EU diet.”

“The study found that meat and dairy account for more than 75% of the impact from EU diets. That's because meat and dairy production causes not only direct emissions from animal production, but also contributes to deforestation from cropland expansion for feed, which is often produced outside of the EU.”

“"People tend to think that consuming locally will be the solution to climate change, but it turns out that the type of product we eat is much more important for the overall impact," says IIASA researcher Hugo Valin, a study coauthor and Sandström's YSSP advisor. "Europeans are culturally attached to meat and dairy product consumption.”

Air miles are a red herring, most emissions are generated at the production stage not the transport stage.

Tell people that you hang your washing in the front garden. That will run and run,
