Anyone tried the McDonald's McPlant?

289 replies

Legodout · 11/01/2022 16:14

Interested in anyone's views before I try at the weekend! I am a big fan of fake-meat burgers (the only category of fake meat I think is indistinguishable from/superior to the original) and usually have Linda McCartney's or Co-Ops own brand, so looking forward to trying this!

On a side note, anyone have a good fake-meat sausage recommendations? None I've tried have hit the mark.

Thanks!

DS1 works in McDonald's and is absolutely disgusted by it. He says it makes the whole restaurant smell foul, the "meat" tastes OK on the way down but leaves an awful after taste and that the cheese is the most disgusting thing he's ever tasted.

He really feels very strongly about it and he's generally not a fussy eater Grin

FreshandLively · 11/01/2022 18:58

Oh, he did say the vegan mayo that they now use in all their meals is better than the old one.

Magnited · 11/01/2022 18:59

People don't claim to have zero impact on animals

This is my point. Upthread. Read it - they are!!

Buying local and growing your own food is the only way to get close to zero. Buying vegan food from global or national retailers is not.

Again, not sure what you're on about or the point you're trying to make to be honest, there's always at least one on these types of threads, perhaps meat has an adverse affect on brain cells?
ineedsun · 11/01/2022 19:02

Honestly, there are people on here who could have an argument in an empty room 🙄

Tobleroney · 11/01/2022 19:03

@Magnited

No way is that list of ingredients "good for animals".

The only local ingredient will be the meat. The bun flour is likely Canadian, possibly French.

The rest is flown in from many different countries and some processed food ie 'out of season' animals habitats will have made way for cash crops;

Sugar (unless 100% British beets)
Sesame
Rye
Milk (Denmark?)
Sunflower oil
Tomatoes (probably Spain or Sicily)
Spices
Gherkins
Onions
Mustard (will be French or US)

Not all vegan or vegetarian food is good for animals. Nor is it better for the planet. It is more complicated than that.

You're talking about the globalisation of food and the 'I will eat unseasonal fruit and veg and produce all year round whenever I want', which is the norm. These are EATEN BY EVERYONE. It is not a waggling fingers at 'vegan' issue.

Yes, we should try to eat local, but to lay deforestation and destruction of wildlife habitat at the feet of people trying a new plant burger - made up of ingredients that EVERYONE eats, far more overwhelmingly so meat-eaters who outnumber vegans by perhaps 98% - and to conveniently bypass the sheer land mass needed to grow animal food to ultimately convert into meat is ridiculous.

God that’s a lot of ingredients!! I do wonder how/why these processed vegan alternatives are being badged as healthy/virtuous when in many cases they are MORE over processed than the alternative
Yes. I've always wondered that as well.
Keepitonthedownlow · 11/01/2022 19:04

Sheesh why are meat eaters so aggressive?

edgeware · 11/01/2022 19:06

Omg yes buying local and growing your own food. What a sustainable and accessible option to all. Oh wait.

Pugroll · 11/01/2022 19:10

@Keepitonthedownlow

Sheesh why are meat eaters so aggressive?
Probably all of the hormones they're eating in their meat!
BackBackBack · 11/01/2022 19:12

I find these types of thread weird. No vegan I know will think of McDonald's (or BK, or Wagamama or any other chain) as being "healthy", but it's nice to have options when you go out with friends. Or in my case when I'm travelling for work and having to eat at service stations when there is no other alternative except hummus and crackers from M&S Simply Food for the millionth time.

Not the cornerstone of a healthy diet but as an occasional indulgence - fine. My usual food is cooked from scratch and we use relatively few processed ingredients (make our own bread, I make our own soya mince and so on).

Sheesh why are meat eaters so aggressive?
Happens all the time. They could just ignore a thread that literally doesn't concern them, but no. And it's always meat eaters that say vegans and vegetarians shove their views down their throats. I always find the opposite

Vegans on average live 15 years longer. @Youngatheart00
AnnaSW1 · 11/01/2022 19:15

I like the first half but by the second half I hated it

Innocenta · 11/01/2022 19:15
@Pugroll

This is the point. Omnivores, Vegetarians and Vegans all inflict harm on animals. I can assure you I am not triggered at all. I eat animals. I harm animals. As does everyone on the planet.

Do not pretend otherwise even if you are vegan.
Vegetarians live on average 7 years longer, and vegans 15 years.

C8H10N4O2 · 11/01/2022 19:16

@BIWI

OK - to make the point further - here are the ingredients for an equivalent quarterpounder beef patty:

Quarter Beef Patty
100% Pure Beef.
No additives, fillers, binders, preservatives or flavour enhancers. Just pure forequarter and flank. A little salt and pepper is added to season after cooking.

If you want to be vegan, it's your prerogative, obviously. But I wonder how many people realise just how processed these foods are?

I wonder how many bonkers, low carb meat nutters realise just how patronising they are?

You might want to google the details of the commercial meat in McDonalds and add in all the related ingredients which you seem to have omitted from the meat burger ingredient list.

Or do you think posters are really stupid enough not to notice the long list you omitted?

sadpapercourtesan · 11/01/2022 19:16

"Vegans on average live 15 years longer. @Youngatheart00"

Nah, it just feels like 15 years longer.

EishetChayil · 11/01/2022 19:17

I had one today. Pretty good!

faithinnature1 · 11/01/2022 19:19

I haven't read the thread but think taste and glory veggie sausages are the best I've tried so far

Innocenta · 11/01/2022 19:19

@BIWI

You're all very welcome to join the low carb threads Grin
There's no evidence that eating low carb is beneficial for health. In fact it's often harmful because what people eat instead usually includes more carcinogens and a greater risk of kidney disease.

A vegan diet is the most ethic one, but obviously many people don't care about that or want to prioritise other things - fair enough, it's not important to everyone. But it's important to be honest about the real impact of diet on health.

MrsPnut · 11/01/2022 19:22

@BIWI

What I really take issue with - and the reason I posted the ingredients list - is people who think that vegan food, or plant-based as it's now being called, is somehow healthier or better for you than meat-based alternatives.

I completely understand the arguments for wanting to either reduce or cut out meat/fish/eggs - but so many people seem to assume that these new products are healthier in some way because they're vegan.

And as an ex-market researcher, who spent many years going shopping with consumers, I can tell you that virtually nobody ever looks at the back of pack for the list of ingredients. (The general exception being people who are looking at the calorie count, or people who have some kind of allergy).

The other people who tend to always read the ingredients list are vegetarians and vegans.

It's amazing how many products have animal products sneaked into them for the sake of saving money.

Postdatedpandemic · 11/01/2022 19:25

Didn't realise MaccyDs sold naked beef patties @BIWI

Thanks for the ingredient list, I'd have assumed it contained soy and it doesn't. I can eat it and not miss out on another social event. Thank you again

Bethany7 · 11/01/2022 19:26

Tried it for first time on sat and loved it! My husband liked it but felt there was a bit too much ketchup in it and it was a bit 'sloppy' although I didn't feel that. He said he would just ask less ketchup next time.

Regards to sausages we prefer the frozen Richmond to the fridge ones. Tastier for some reason.

Legodout · 11/01/2022 19:27

Wow! OP here, thanks for all the responses and the commentary! And thanks also for the sausage recommendations, will work my way through them.
