Another Bloody Downing Street party

JustJam4Tea · 10/01/2022 21:51

So hours after telling us to only meet one other person outside from a different household 100 invited to Downing Street BYO in the garden.

It was unlawful to mix outside. If my employer had invited 100 staff to a garden party we’d have all been arrested.

@Phos

I don’t really care anymore. Tell me how many people hand on heart have followed the rules to the letter throughout. If you say “I have!” you’re a damn liar.
The salient point is how many people on here were part of a government trying to force other people to obey those rules whilst refusing to do so themselves.
the80sweregreat · 12/01/2022 13:19

I hate all this ' I dont think everyone followed the rules '
Most people , back then , did follow them all as much as they could.
My own son is only 23 and he used to hate it if I went out to the supermarket! We had to eat.
He could work from home, he was lucky
We all did our best to stick to the rules in our little family , I didn't see my own dad when he died of covid , we could only have restricted numbers for his funeral we did our best and so did millions and millions of others.
These people couldn't even follow their own rules one hour after a presser telling us to stay at home
But hey ho, he'll live to lie another day.

LumosSolem · 12/01/2022 13:21

*I didn't. I didn't follow the rules that I thought didn't make the slightest bit of difference to Covid transmission and were 'pandemic theatre'.

The difference? I wasn't one of the people deciding on the rules and imposing them on tens of millions of people. You can bet that if I were, I'd be following those rules to the letter, because I'd believe they were the right thing to do. The problem is not the party in itself. It's hypocrisy and lies.*

This. I didn't follow all the rules either. I would never had held or attended a house party but I went on a couple of dates and didn't keep 2m apart or whatever. Pretty sure I didn't stay 2m away from the two friends I met up with outside. WRT the dates- I didn't agree with how far the rules went in preventing people forming new relationships, couples who lived separately not being able to see each other etc.

I have always tried to be reasonable and respectful- masks etc, at the slightest symptom I've stayed home, kept my DC off school, tested. I don't think Boris understands the word respect. What they did was disgusting.

So he apologises and says while it was technically a work event he should have known the public would not see it like that.

So it's our fault then ? As I predicted it would be upthread.

the80sweregreat · 12/01/2022 13:27

It's all OUR fault for not realizing that a non party party , bring your own booze , is actually a working event.
Aren't we all just jolly stupid eh ?

As has been pointed out many, many times now, a lot of people had no choice but to follow the rules even in heartbreaking circumstances.
AllThePogs · 12/01/2022 13:27

Very few people held parties. This wasnt driving a few more miles than you are supposed to. Or popping in on your elderly mum. It was a party that 100 people were invited to.
People who did this got big fines and were in the news.

the80sweregreat · 12/01/2022 13:28

All those banging on about ' not everyone followed the rules ' really need to look at themselves.
The majority of people didn't have a choice.

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 12/01/2022 13:29

He's lucky the doctors and nurses who treated him in ITU weren't doing his version of 'working', isn't he?

AllThePogs · 12/01/2022 13:30

Personally, the only rule I broke was to drive further than 5 miles to go walks in quiet places. That was it. And that was never a law, simply guidance.
And no I am not a liar.
This reminds me of people who break other laws and justify it by saying everyone does it. So no, not everyone shoplifts or cheats on their taxes or steals from their employer.

derxa · 12/01/2022 13:30

This point, I think, is the death knell to further restrictions Thank God

I think it's entirely fair to question whether a world famous pathological liars assertion they had Covid is worth anything. I'm still not convinced myself.

@SerendipityJane me neither. I believe he was ill, but was that covid or because of abuses of his body through a habit?

IntermittentParps · 12/01/2022 13:34

@Peregrina

Even if Sunak wasn't at the party, sorry 'work event', his flat overlooks the Downing Street garden so he must have wondered what all the racket was.
Anyone else got a mental image of a new Cold War Steve piece: Sunak leaning out his window shaking his fist as Johnson, Gove et al large it up on the grass?
SerendipityJane · 12/01/2022 13:38
@SerendipityJane me neither. I believe he was ill, but was that covid or because of abuses of his body through a habit?
We know he is a liar who wouldn't know the truth it it killed him. So he gets fuck all benefit of any doubt from me. The whole timing and (pardon the expression) breathless coverage - especially from the BBC - never felt right.

I believe some of our posters would put it:

^Ye had covid ? Did ye aye ?"

StevieNicksscarf · 12/01/2022 13:42

@Phos - do not judge others by your low standards. What gives you the right to call people liars? Me and my family followed the guidance/law to the letter. HTH.

Hearwego · 12/01/2022 13:55

I also think lots people are concerned about themselves now ,to care too much about Boris and a party.
In April energy prices will go up and so will national insurance contributions. Most working families will be 2 grand a year worse off. That’s with energy prices doubling and NI increases.
There doesn’t seem that much concern for that now and what is Keir Starmer doing about it? Come on Labour, have some fighting spirit..
Because were all going to be worse off in a few months time....

derxa · 12/01/2022 13:56

@AllThePogs

Yes I know derxa you dont care how many people die.
When you type things like this do you actually believe them? Do you actually believe that I don't care how many people die?

He’s not in charge, what’s Boris Johnson doing about it?

Shit at his job too.

But I wasn’t setting the rules, I wasn’t meeting up with potentially a 100 work colleagues socaially when I was told I could see one other person outside from my household. Yes I may have gone out twice in a day, have bubbled up sooner than we were allowed to.

But I wasn’t holdin a fucking BYO party in my back garden and lying about it.

The first lockdown was very strict. I can't believe some posters forget this. I think they are thinking of next year.

All I did was go to the food or diy shop. Decorate and walk.

What the govt have done is abhorrent

My mil had her funeral then and my kids couldn't even say goodbye to their gran 😡

AllThePogs · 12/01/2022 14:08

@derxa yes I do believe that from your comments.

Not the point. If you make the rules, you follow them. Not only that; you have to lead from the front and be better than the rest of us. Caesar's wife and all that.

But what will be the result of your assessment of my character? I'm fascinated to hear genuinely.
