Over rated luxury items?

What things are luxury items that you think are okay, but are overrated?

For me, it is Molton Brown products. I have a relative who keeps buying me these for presents. They are fine, I use them happily, but no way are they worth the cost.

It’s such a shame Neals Yard is now an MLM. I actually really rate their products but won’t buy from them anymore

Somersetlady · 08/01/2022 18:46

@TabithaTittlemouse

yves saint laurent touche eclat I like it but you can get better for less money. why can’t I stop buying it?
Totally off topic but @TabithaTittlemouse and @sqirrelfriends please can you recommend the better alternatives.

I also hate the smell once they are opened

Snorkmaidenn · 08/01/2022 18:48

Moet and Chandon Champagne.

Buy supermarket own brand, or fizzy wine.

Cremant/Limoux is what you need
PAFMO · 08/01/2022 18:56

@Somersetlady, the Collection one is excellent and about a fiver!

justasking111 · 08/01/2022 18:59

I thought it was just me had the smelly touche éclat. Then I discovered the Loreal equivalent which is just as good and much cheaper.

jackfrosttoes · 08/01/2022 19:00

A lot (not all) of the things hotel chocolat does - it's good but not that much better in general than chocolate that is much cheaper.

Georgyporky · 08/01/2022 19:11

Mulberry bags.
Very easy for pickpockets to dip

Somersetlady · 08/01/2022 19:12

Thank you @PMAOL

Agent Provocateur lingerie... Who the hell would pay £295 for this..

Ugg boots. I think they look horrible, and I can't get my head around the fact that they cost over 200 quid!

XiCi · 08/01/2022 19:19

I absolutely love Badedas but its £1.99 a bottle so it can hardly be judged as a luxury product!

I think Jo Malone is really overrated, all smells really strong and cheap, like toilet cleaner.

Also don't rate Neom candles

Wrinklyeyes · 08/01/2022 19:20

I spent silly money on bathrobes for the DCs made of Turkish cotton. They look cold and scratchy. Primark fluffy ones are nicer.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 08/01/2022 19:25

@Hairyfriend

L'occitane. Especially the mens CADE range shave cream. I can't stand the smell. DH thinks is nice, but no better than cheap shaving foam.
I feel like this with DMILs Sanctuary stuff. She is obsessed with it but it truly smells AWFUL
RampantIvy · 08/01/2022 19:27

I have to disagree with cashmere. It is so light and so warm. Hand washing it isn't onerous, and I add it into the final spin on my washer to get all the water out.

Googleplexian · 08/01/2022 19:36

Who Gives A Crap toilet paper. You may as well wipe your arse with a £50 note (that’s how much it costs). Meant to be eco friendly but flown across the world. Such a MC cliche.

MeredithGreyishblue · 08/01/2022 19:37

@eagerlywaitingfor wait until you hear about wool...Grin

chocatoo · 08/01/2022 19:40

Truffle oil/anything flavoured with truffle. Yuk.
Expensive nail varnish (does anyone do their own nails any longer?).

I just seem to damage it by wearing it!

I’m not stranger to hand washing, I only wear wool knitwear, but sheep/lambs wool seems to be more robust than goat hair!

MrsMoastyToasty · 08/01/2022 19:44

Designer handbags. My £25 TK Maxx purchase stores my belongings in just the same way. Like most handbags it spends time under a desk or table.

RJnomore1 · 08/01/2022 19:44

@Maireas

Elizabeth Arden Eight Hour Cream. Smells horrible. I put it in the bin.
Oh no it’s great stuff. When my husband was working a job where his contact dermatitis broke out it was the only thing that kept it at bay. It does smell odd though.
TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 08/01/2022 19:46

Prince Andrew?
Not even OK really...

UnicornPoopsRainbows · 08/01/2022 19:46

The Neom Wellbeing Pod. Get a diffuser for £20-£30 from B&M or Amazon, then if you must, buy the Neom essential oils. Much prettier diffusers available too

BertieBotts · 08/01/2022 19:46

I don't get the concept of a luxury bag. It's a bag. It holds things. What is luxurious about it?!

I tried caviar once and was incredibly unimpressed. And why do expensive restaurants put foam on things, what is up with that? I want to eat food, not bubbles. It's horrible.

Pinchofnom · 08/01/2022 19:47

Agree Molton Brown is pretty meh but I did used to like their ylang ylang body stuff but it got discontinued I think.

Overrated:

Jo Malone
Penhaglions perfume (received as a present and it’s really not worth £200!)

I am a bit fanatical about candles and I do love Diptyque.
