Over rated luxury items?

What things are luxury items that you think are okay, but are overrated?

For me, it is Molton Brown products. I have a relative who keeps buying me these for presents. They are fine, I use them happily, but no way are they worth the cost.

Badedas isnt luxury. The smell is amazing

FingersofFish · 08/01/2022 17:28

Yes @TabithaTittlemouse!!! Why do I keep buying it when the vast majority of high street products are much better. I alternate because each time I get to the end of one I think I'm never wasting £ on this again then 6 months later I feel I must have missed something and try it again...

Jo Malone went downhill when it went to Estée Lauder. Jo Loves is way better.

Louis Vuitton stuff.

I just don't get the love for plastic with a vulgar pattern.

Chunkymenrock · 08/01/2022 17:31

Stupid handbags and twatty candles.

PearlclutchersInc · 08/01/2022 17:33

bleujay I got sent a sample of Jo Malone's Pomegranete Noir. DH thought it smelt like toilet cleaner (I wasnt keen, it didn't seem to mellow down at all).

NightmareSlashDelightful · 08/01/2022 17:33

Blush I use Molton Brown shower gels as hand wash but only because people buy them for me and I don’t like using them as actual shower gel (prefer a bar of soap).

Cashmere anything. Yes it’s soft, but it pulls, tears, wears through, and get holes in very easily.
I have to disagree on that one. I've picked up a lot secondhand and some of it has lasted through years of frequent wear. I've got a cashmere scarf that that's about 15 years old and still going after many winters of almost daily use. It's also incredibly warm.

Things like designer handbags or watches. Once you have them, they lose their appeal (to me anyway), and all I can see is how much money I've wasted on them. I sold them all a few years ago on eBay and wouldn't bother again.

RosesAndHellebores · 08/01/2022 17:41

Heated pool house and gym but it's all relative.

High Street Cashmere.

Pedigree cats.
@1positivity you can spend your own money however you like.
This thread is really about things sold as luxury, that really aren't. Of course everyone will have different views on that.

The poshest friends I have had Molton Brown handwash in their downstairs toilet. DP was astounded when I said they probably paid £15 for the bottle.
A touch more than that I think

ruthieness · 08/01/2022 17:45

Diamonds!

luckylavender · 08/01/2022 17:47

I like Molton Brown, L'Occitane and Jo Malone although I also use cheaper products. Don't understand spending money daily on takeaway coffees, expensive restaurants don't appeal, ditto cocktails or very regular takeaways. Don't understand the appeal of v expensive cars. Horses for courses.

Noooo! The whole point of cashmere is its warmth! For those of us swanking around our enormous period homes, it's a necessity not a luxury.

They may have paid £15 for the first bottle, but you can refill them with a cheaper copy with the initials B&H (or is it a less expensive original?)

TheLeadbetterLife · 08/01/2022 17:51

Agree about diamonds and also pedigree pets. Why would you pay thousands for an inbred, disease-prone mutant that will die of cancer after five years? They’re always thick as mince compared with a mutt too. The Hapsburgs of dogs.

RoyalFamilyFan · 08/01/2022 17:55

@Choccyp1g I might be wrong, but I really don't think they are the kind of people to do that.
When they come to ours we have handwash that costs 50p a bottle from ALDI.

OP yesterday I was "middle class clothes" you were arguing over. Today it's "luxury products"

Are you a journo? There's a pattern emerging!

RoyalFamilyFan · 08/01/2022 17:58

I think OP just likes a good ding-dong, and why not? Keeps things lively.

Pandora jewellery

NewMessageFrom · 08/01/2022 18:01

I refill my jo malone and molton brown with the aldi / lidl copies

Look pretty and smell pretty much the same

RoyalFamilyFan · 08/01/2022 18:01

@SkylarFerris pandora is so expensive by the time you buy all the charms. I can see the appeal of individually meaningful charms, but the price tag!

My word yes! This!

Tana433 · 08/01/2022 18:06

I personnally love Molton Brown products and always get gifted it for birthdays and christmas or i buy it when it is in the sales. Yes, i agree that it is expensive but i do believe it is worth the money. If you are being gifted it why are you bothered, it isnt coming out of your pocket after all?
