Over rated luxury items?

What things are luxury items that you think are okay, but are overrated?

For me, it is Molton Brown products. I have a relative who keeps buying me these for presents. They are fine, I use them happily, but no way are they worth the cost.

Goodgodlemon, I had exactly the same obsession with Badedas whilst pregnant, although I never ate the bubbles. I used to sit in the bath sniffing the stuff. I recently bought a bottle and it brought back all the memories.
I love Molton Brown but never buy it for myself so was delighted to have some as a gift for Christmas.

RoyalFamilyFan · 08/01/2022 22:23

Oysters. I like oysters, but the taste really is not that special. If they were cheap I think they would be viewed in the same way as liver. A niche food that some people love but most people are not interested in.

@Teenagekicksmyass

I got my daughter some Olaplex number 3 for Christmas. It cost £27. I tried it today and couldn’t see a scrap of difference in my hair, apart from it’s full of static today Confused
You have to use it weekly over a long period of time. I’ve been using it three years and my hair is in great condition now and around 10 inches longer!

Bedding with a high thread count is 100% worth it imo.

“Designer” or expensive baby clothes on the other hand..total waste of money. As long as they’re in 100% cotton does it matter if the white vests are from Asda or Armani?

M&S food - I don’t see the attraction of playing 3x the price of a normal food shop just so I can pick up some Percy pigs when I get to the tills.

Blinky21 · 08/01/2022 22:33

Agree with Dyson, we have a vacuum and it's rubbish, luckily it was a gift. Mulberry too, quality is not worth the money any more

EveningOverRooftops · 08/01/2022 22:39
@1positivity you can spend your own money however you like.
This thread is really about things sold as luxury, that really aren't. Of course everyone will have different views on that.

The poshest friends I have had Molton Brown handwash in their downstairs toilet. DP was astounded when I said they probably paid £15 for the bottle.
Wouldn’t surprise me if some of them just refilled the bottle with a budget similar scent Grin

RoyalFamilyFan · 08/01/2022 22:45

Most expensive hairdressers. Most of the time if I get my hair cut, the quality of the cut bears no relation to how much I have paid or the trendiness of the hairdressers. The best cut I ever had was an ultra-cheap haircut in small Polish hairdressers on holiday. There are exceptions, but a good hairdresser is not just about skill but how well they listen to what the person actually wants. And some expensive hairdressers dont.

I’m burning a This Works candle right now and the scent is nice but not strong at all!

I do like Molton Brown and buy their Frankincense & Allspice hand wash for Christmastime every year. I appreciate the scent every time I use it so it’s worth it to me!

TabithaTittlemouse · 08/01/2022 22:53

Is Badedas the horse chestnut bubble bath? Is that luxury?

HelloBunny · 08/01/2022 22:53

I refill all of my posh cosmetics jars, it’s more eco-friendly. And they’re so pretty!

M&S food, the trick is never to buy normal food there. Just the M&S special stuff. Their salads & desserts are the best.

Hotel Chocolat. The best thing there is the Pink Champagne Truffles.

My luxury item is Chanel perfume (and lipsticks!)

I love Badedas! But I haven’t seen it cheap anywhere...

Ageee that a lot of luxury brands aren’t what they used to be... And that you used to be able to get quite nice things for less, a few years ago.

HelloBunny · 08/01/2022 22:58

Agree about hairdressers! My guy charges 50 quid a go, he just “gets” my hair. It’s not your usual salon set-up with hair-washing / blow-drying & nice products. And he never talks hair colouring! Just gives me a really great cut, every time.

M&S food - I don’t see the attraction of playing 3x the price of a normal food shop just so I can pick up some Percy pigs when I get to the tills.

My cousin had a summer job in a chicken factory years ago, packaging up chicken dinners etc. He had labels for M&S, Aldi, Asda, etc. Exactly the same food but with different labels for different supermarkets.

What a con!

I’m just shocked at how many different spellings of Molton Brown I’ve seen on this thread…

Jaxhog · 08/01/2022 23:11

Louis Vuitton stuff. Me too. It just looks so cheap and nasty!
And 'posh' candles. Total waste of money.

I do like Molton Brown and cashmere though.

Icenii · 08/01/2022 23:14

Badedas is £12 in Morrisons? Never heard of it before so thought I'd add it to the online shop if it was so cheap!

MummyJasmin · 08/01/2022 23:29

Bedding with high TC is so worth is...imo!

My late and much-missed DM so loved the idea of cashmere, she thought it came from some delightful exotic furry creature. She was most put out when she discovered the truth!

RoyalFamilyFan · 09/01/2022 00:05

I have only just discovered that cashmere comes from goats.

Champagne! It's always disappointing compared to the nicer cavas, never feels worth the money

jamandmarmaladethesecondcoming · 09/01/2022 00:57

@TheLeadbetterLife

Agree about diamonds and also pedigree pets. Why would you pay thousands for an inbred, disease-prone mutant that will die of cancer after five years? They’re always thick as mince compared with a mutt too. The Hapsburgs of dogs.
so true!! @TheLeadbetterLife = esp the pedigree pets
jamandmarmaladethesecondcoming · 09/01/2022 01:10
 • Luxury Candles - burning £50 note...just why would you??
(Far rather essential oils - Neals Yeard are about £6 -15.00 last all year)

Designer handbags, shoes and watches - they just scream 'mug me' oh..wait..too late!

Waitrose - You are not what you used to be and neither is your customer service

Perfume and make-up - most of it or at least its ingredients not cruelty free Angry

Luxury Christmas Crackers - very underwhelming. Thre cheapy Co-Op kids nes are more fun and nostalgic

ZenNudist · 09/01/2022 01:29

Pandora is obviously a marketing gimmick. It's like those collect 'em all kids toys, exactly the same impulse driving it. Still some people like it and it makes them happy.

I love cashmere and mine lasts forever despite being "high street" as someone so sniffily describes it.

I don't own status bags any more. Well not ones I use. Dh bought me a few when I was younger and people did notice the label which surprised me and was a bit cringe. I tell a lie, I still use my lily bag for evenings out. I must have had it over a decade, longer and I still love it. I prefer coach bags now as I can't justify a really expensive designer price tag but I still like a nice leather bag.

My ds is all about the labels. I've never seen the point if paying hundreds on clothes or shoes when they wear out and date.

onedayoranother · 09/01/2022 01:37

Oh no @onlychildhamster high thread count sheets are a must! Well worth paying for.
Expensive moisturiser is a waste. Many designer handbags.
I don't think of Molten Brown a luxury - it's just normal stuff? I see it in the local pub's loo for goodness sakes!

RJnomore1 · 09/01/2022 01:41

What on Earth are people buying in m n s food hall that’s three times the price of say asda??
