Over rated luxury items?

What things are luxury items that you think are okay, but are overrated?

For me, it is Molton Brown products. I have a relative who keeps buying me these for presents. They are fine, I use them happily, but no way are they worth the cost.

@Tana433 It is a bored musing. Not a rant.

@NewMessageFrom

I refill my jo malone and molton brown with the aldi / lidl copies

Look pretty and smell pretty much the same

Why though?

Do you feel a pressure to do that- to appear more affluent? That it is unacceptable to use Lidl? That you need to feel part of a Molton Brown gang?

Why not just use Aldi and Lidl and not care abut what other people think?

I love @TheLeadbetterLife 's description of pedigree dogs!
@1positivity you can spend your own money however you like.
This thread is really about things sold as luxury, that really aren't. Of course everyone will have different views on that.

The poshest friends I have had Molton Brown handwash in their downstairs toilet. DP was astounded when I said they probably paid £15 for the bottle.
I’m astounded that your DH gave a shit. My DH would be astounded that I was discussing hand wash.
Does anyone really care what hand wash or soap their friends use?

Maireas · 08/01/2022 18:11

Elizabeth Arden Eight Hour Cream.
Smells horrible.
I put it in the bin.

Maireas · 08/01/2022 18:11

Louis Vuitton handbags with the ugly brown pattern.

TimBoothseyes · 08/01/2022 18:15

Mulberry handbags...very ,very overrated and hideously overpriced.

sweetbellyhigh · 08/01/2022 18:19

So much.

There are aisles in the supermarket I never go down, particularly cleaning products and toiletries.

So much stuff in plastic bottles that is essentially the same stuff marketed on many different ways.

I remember the days before body wash. I mean wth, what is wrong with soap?

We should all be using plastic-free products wherever possible anyway. You can so easily buy bars of soap or bars of shampoo or moisturiser.

Cleaning products are a con. There is virtually nothing that you can't clean with baking soda and white vinegar. And there's a whole lot less damage done in the process not least to our health (and purse!)

Wrt sheets though I do definitely notice the difference in quality. Everyone is different and some people are very sensitive to how things feel, sheets, fabrics, wools etc.

I'm the same with smells, I loathe chemical smells, give me the fragrance of nature over a chemical perfume or air freshener any day.

StillSmallVoice · 08/01/2022 18:22

Beauty Pie. Nothing wrong with it, but nothing special, and by the time you've paid the subscription and the postage not that cheap either.

And the amount of packaging is insane.

And the breathless, hyper marketing copy is just plain irritating.

I am clearly not their demographic, so why do I keep buying the stuff?

firstworldproblems88 · 08/01/2022 18:23

@TheHoptimist

Badedas isnt luxury. The smell is amazing
Absolutely agree. It's my favourite. I remember doing the big food shop with my mum every week and seeing badedas on the shelf and wondering who buys something so expensive. Now they sell it in home bargains 😀
whenwillthedecoratingend · 08/01/2022 18:24

I think luxury is relative and if it's something that you enjoy then who cares what other people think 🤷‍♀️ to me luxury can be splashing out £9 on Whittards dark hot chocolate because it's delicious or a neom candle because I like the smell and it feels special when I light it. Others will think they're a complete waste of money. Luxury is just having something that feels special to you.

Rosemarypots · 08/01/2022 18:28

Molton Brown hand wash really dries out my skin, which is a shame as I like the fragrances. I much prefer Neal's Yard, which is cheaper.

Buildingthefuture · 08/01/2022 18:30

My DH (who does not give a shit about whether things are classed as luxury or not) loves Moulton Brown and always uses the shower gel. I’m not arsed (I use a normal bar of soap, whatever’s on offer) I do have Moulton Brown hand wash and hand cream in my downstairs loo though……it’s fine but no better than anything else, bought it in the sale, wouldn’t bother again.

@IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads

Cashmere anything. Yes it’s soft, but it pulls, tears, wears through, and get holes in very easily.
Cashmere sounds so lovely, luxurious and indulgent, doesn't it? Till you find out that it's goat hair.
Grandadwasthatyou · 08/01/2022 18:35

Trinny make up products. A lot of people rave over it but I felt like I had completely wasted my money. Nobody could even tell my face looked any different with her BFF cream. And you can't get the stuff out of the little pots everything comes in if you've got slightly longer nails. ( I know I should use brushes but hey)

Needrichangemynameagain · 08/01/2022 18:36

Kerasatase.
Wool jumpers- they bobble immediately.
I love Molton Brown.
The one bottle of shower gel lasts so long! Like two months or so and I use it daily.
I would never switch to ordinary shower gel as I would be out of the bottle in a week or so.

noblegreenk · 08/01/2022 18:37

As soon as I read your thread title I thought Molton Brown products.

But wool is sheep’s hair, so.. Confused

RosesAndHellebores · 08/01/2022 18:38

Infinity (over large) smart telly on the wall.

Blurberoo · 08/01/2022 18:40

@TheLeadbetterLife so true!

PAFMO · 08/01/2022 18:40

@RoyalFamilyFan

A colleague used to rave about babadedas. She gave me some as a present. Perfectly fine, but being honest not any better than a supermarket alternative.
But Badedas is as cheap as Radox. I love it, for purely nostalgic purposes but it's not luxury. I buy if from Amazon for about £4 for a ginormous bottle that lasts about a year.

Touche Éclat- is rubbish. Stinks like a dirty dishcloth after a week. Almost every other cheap brand version is better.

Jo Malone- cologne. Alcohol that's had a microscopic bit of perfume dropped into it. The epitome of style over substance.

Mulberry bags. Ugly. Seriously. The big ones especially.

blacksax · 08/01/2022 18:40

The spa day.

RosesAndHellebores · 08/01/2022 18:43

Bodegas is special. My granny used it in the 60's. Like Shalimar and hay and horse it reminds me of her and is worth every penny. Fortunately dd was born in 98 and is the spitting image Grin

NewMessageFrom · 08/01/2022 18:45

@theHoptimist
I think they are prettier, and my family is them in smaller amounts as they think they are expensive

Ylvamoon · 08/01/2022 18:45

Mulberry anything, 99.8976999% you see people carrying around is actually fake.
I used to work for a charity and we always verified donations with them....
I hate it it's a handbag / purse/ whatever FFS! You get a nicer one for less without having to buy it off some slimy dealer.
