Phrases you hate reading on mumsnet

I’ve been on mumsnet for about 18 years and you know what, if I read about people putting ducks in a row once more I might go mental.
What phrase do you hate.

‘It’s not a race to the bottom’. It’s annoying enough when used in the correct context, but it’s always used incorrectly on MN.

‘Entitled’. No one is entirely sure what it means, but they throw it around anyway if they think a poster is a bit ‘up themselves’ or has the temerity to have any expectations in life.

‘You sound like a peach’. So po-faced. Someone felt obliged to say this to me on a thread about an old friend’s suicide. Thankfully it seems to have died out a bit.

‘Ooh, I bet I’m going to get flamed now’ or other variations on the theme. Oh yeah - you absolutely didn’t want to cause a drama or create a bitchfest. That wasn’t your plan all along at all.

‘Horrid’. So twee! I’ve never heard an adult use it in real life. Charity Dingle said it on Emmerdale the other week and I thought ‘the writer must be an MNer’ - it was so out of character!

OhWhyNot · 08/01/2022 21:19

It’s all relative

No struggling for money is not all relative when you have a high income you have choices

emmetgirl · 08/01/2022 21:23

@WobblyLondoner oh yes I bloody hate "making memories" too!! Puts my teeth on edge....

EssexLioness · 08/01/2022 21:29

‘He sounds autistic’ whenever someone starts a thread about their abusive partner

EssexLioness · 08/01/2022 21:30

Oh and ‘naice’ is particularly annoying

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 08/01/2022 21:32

@BessieBlue

Not a phrase but posting a ultrasound image of a 12 week fetus and asking what the sex is.
Yes this gets me as well
DroopyClematis · 08/01/2022 21:34

@LizBennet

The number of emetophobes. No, you just don't like being sick, like every single other person.
👏👏👏
merrygoround23 · 08/01/2022 21:36

LTB

cherrypie66 · 08/01/2022 21:37

All the abbreviations that I have no idea what they mean

DroopyClematis · 08/01/2022 21:41

Overuse and misuse of 'literally.'

Eg ' I was literally crying and shaking.'

Also, too many folk on here seem to shake an awful lot.

Sausagedogsarethebest · 08/01/2022 21:42

People that say keep your beak out [of someone else's business]? It's so rude.

Not a phrase, but the use of entitled. Can't stand it.

slashlover · 08/01/2022 22:20

So just fuck off with your insensitivity.

If you've been diagnosed then PP isn't talking about you.

Estimates about the prevalence of emetophobia suggest that it is a rare condition occurring in about 0.1% of the population, or 5% on MN.

Nitgel · 08/01/2022 22:21

Why do you care pisses me off

Well then the poster should have made that clear. Emet is a hideous condition to deal with.
slashlover · 08/01/2022 22:28

They clearly said the number of emetophobes. as in MN seems to have a much higher number than the general population. Similar to how most of MN seems to live rurally or earn 6 figures.

PappaPaddy · 08/01/2022 22:35

Oh gawd I could be here some time...

Ducks In A Row
Picky Bits
Kitchen Supper
Darked On Washing
Hate To Read And Run
LTB
Are You/They/ on the spectrum/ Have SN

I best finish there... I could go on 😁

Okbye · 08/01/2022 22:44

Not phrases as such but I hate all the ‘DH/DS/DD/DC/DP’ bollocks.
I don’t understand why people don’t just type ‘husband/son/children/parents’ etc, it’s not like they’re massive long words!

The worst is when people type ‘ddog’ uuuurrrgh for fucks sake DOG not ‘ddog’ 🤬

BurntToastAgain · 08/01/2022 22:51

I get the whole internet acronyms thing. Fine. That’s how things are.

But DDog is longer than dog. And looks like a written stutter.

Same as when people feel the need to write DSis for clarity because DS could be son or sister. And DP could be partner of parents. And DF could be fiancé or father. In all of these situations, it would be much easier if people just wrote out the actual word.

Given its MN, the starting assumption is going to be that DS must be your son. Anything else just needs to be written out.

Similarly, DH could cover whatever relationship you actually have. In most cases it doesn’t matter whether you’re actually married. It’s about generally indicating their relationship to you.

The worst that I see on here all the time is the advice 'Don't put him down on the birth certificate!' Or 'Make sure you don't name him on the birth certificate' when advising an OP on a baby's dad that isn't her husband

You can't just 'put someone's name down' Hmm

The worst one I ever saw was STBXBIL - as in the OP’s soon to be ex-husband’s brother. In the time the OP took to work out the acronym, she could have typed ‘my ex’s brother’, plus her entire dilemma, five times over - with the added bonus that we’d have known what the fuck she was talking about.
deathofastrawberry · 08/01/2022 23:12

"Google the fourth trimester" annoying and not really helpful.

And patronising ones like "are you quite young?"
