Money appeared in my bank account

Just under £3k has mysteriously appeared in our joint bank account. Dh knows nothing about it. Neither do I.

I will talk to the bank on Monday, but in the meantime, I'm speculating. Could this be something dodgy or a genuine mistake?

It's an Internet transfer from a bank in Swansea. Confused

Report to your bank! If anyone contacts you asking you to transfer it back to another account or anything don't do it til you've spoken to the bank.

BliainNua · 08/01/2022 12:12

It could be a genuine error, but I'd be very suspicious. Can the bank return it to sender?

AlexaShutUp · 08/01/2022 12:12

Can't really understand how the money could have been transferred in error, as you usually have to match the account number with the name when you set up a transfer. But we are definitely not expecting any payments...

Be especially wary if anyone mentions PayPal x

AlexaShutUp · 08/01/2022 12:13

Bank is closed today, so I can't ask them until Monday. I will talk to them, of course.

I'd assume someone has changed a digit & transferred you money for a car sale or something by mistake.
Check with the bank & just don't spend it!

Buzzer3555 · 08/01/2022 12:13

Definitely report it to the bank. It may well be a scam

AlexaShutUp · 08/01/2022 12:14

We won't spend it! Smile

cauliflowersqueeze · 08/01/2022 12:14

Blimey. Someone somewhere will be having a heart attack wondering where their money has gone! The bank will sort this for you though. Lucky you’re honest.

CaptainCarp · 08/01/2022 12:14

Seconding other posters don't transfer anything back to anyone either

AlexaShutUp · 08/01/2022 12:15

Yes, certainly won't be transferring anything back to anyone. I'll leave it to the bank to sort out.

Hotyogahotchoc · 08/01/2022 12:15

May be a scam and if it's a mistaken payment it can be claimed back

rrhuth · 08/01/2022 12:15

Yes agree report to your bank and do not make any transfers if anyone contacts you. Report any contact to your bank also.

HelgaGPataki · 08/01/2022 12:17

Is it a smaller bank/building society that you bank with? Not all banks have the name checking in place yet, so it can still happen if they agree to proceed without it.

What bank doesn't have a 7 day phone line these days?

No, it's one of the big ones.

Maybe they do have a phone line that I can contact today. Confused I'll check.

Call the your banks fraud line. It's always open and they can check.

Thank you. I'll do that.

The bank will be open today.

Pheebs2021 · 08/01/2022 12:31

Didn't santander make a major glitch on Christmas day and transfer to third party bank accounts lots of millions? Maybe this is something to do with this

NYnewstart · 08/01/2022 12:32

Ooh how exciting if you get to keep it.
Fingers crossed.

3of5 · 08/01/2022 12:33

Hello! Did you apply for any PPI refunds from your bank? I did. Somehow I missed a cheque they sent to me last year (I honestly don't know how I did that) and suddenly about £3k appeared in my bank account in November.

They had noticed that I hadn't cashed the cheque. I checked with my bank who gave me a number to call to make sure it was all legit. And it was.

So maybe that could be it?

TheMerryWidow1 · 08/01/2022 12:34

Santander made errors with payments to accounts over Xmas, could be similar issue.

AlexaShutUp · 08/01/2022 12:34

No, didn't apply for any PPI refunds.

It isn't Santander.

I'm out right now but will call the bank when I get home.
